We have been placing and restoring dental

implants at Weybridge Dental Implant Clinic

(a bespoke implant clinic within Portmore

Dental) for around 20 years. Johann, our

Implantologist, has a master’s degree in

implant dentistry and is a Key Opinion Leader

for the world renowned implant company

BTI (Bio-Technology Institute). Johann’s skill

and expertise means that we can provide

our patients with world-class standards of

implant dentistry: for example, replacing

single missing teeth is something that we

do routinely, alongside more life changing

treatments which often include rebuilding

whole mouths using a combination of bone

augmentation and dental implants.

Of course implant dentistry is a game

changer for most of our patients, clients who

have experienced this kind of dentistry at the

practice continue to tell us how their lives

have been transformed. Why? Well I think

we all take for granted our ability to eat, chew

and smile, only when that ability is taken away

do we understand how debilitating it can be

when our dentition doesn’t function in the

way it should. Patients often experience lack

of confidence, isolation from social situations,

pain, discomfort, poor diet & nutrition,

dramatic weight loss or gain and poor oral

health are a only a few of the symptoms of

missing teeth or ill- fitting dentures.

Whilst implants are not a new technique in

dentistry (implants have in fact been around

for many years) they have

recently become

the treatment

of choice for

missing teeth

as they can

be used to

restore and

repair the

MISSING TEETH? THOUGHT ABOUT DENTAL IMPLANTS?

THIS KIND OF DENTISTRY IS A GAME CHANGER FOR MOST

OF OUR PATIENTS

Dental implants can restore both the appearance and function of your smile, potentially for a lifetime.

Page 5: Portmore eZine: Issue 1 / January 2015

N01932 855 011 [email protected] wportmoredental.co.uk 3

dentition independently of surrounding

natural teeth. Implants can even create a

whole new dentition where there were

originally no teeth present at all.

Implant dentistry is viewed as a permanent

solution for missing teeth, making dental

implants an excellent long term investment

in your overall health & well-being by

restoring both the appearance and function

of your smile potentially for a lifetime.

If you answer ‘Yes’ to the following

statements you may be a suitable candidate

for implant treatment:

• Do you have one or more missing teeth?

• Are you unhappy with having gaps in your smile?

• Do you dislike wearing dentures or find dentures uncomfortable?

• Are your teeth coming loose or severely decayed or damaged?

• Do you suffer from a lack of confidence as a result of wearing dentures or having crowns that keep coming loose?

• Are you looking for a long-term solution to missing teeth?

• Has your speech been affected by having missing teeth?

• Are you unable to taste food properly due to wearing dentures?

So, what are dental implants and how

do they work? Dental implants are small,

titanium cylinders, the size of your baby

fingernail

which act as

a replacement tooth

root. We carry out a minor procedure to

place them into your jawbone, whereby they

act as an anchor or a foundation to hold

crowns, bridges or dentures in place.

Suitable? Dental implants are generally

suitable for most people, in terms of health,

if a person is well enough to undergo the

treatment necessary for fixed bridgework or

routine tooth extractions, the same person

can undergo dental implant procedures. The

best form of implant treatment for you is

determined after a thorough consultation

with the patient, Johann and his nursing team.

‘WALK-IN’ HYGIENE & THERAPYDirect Access means that as a patient you

can book an appointment directly with one

of our Hygienists or Therapists without the

need to see a Dentist first. It is still recom-

mended that you see a Dentist for your

regular examination. However, the ease of

access allows patients to fit regular cleaning

and maintenance into their busy schedules at

times more convenient to them.

HYGIENESpaA Dental Therapist is a qualified Oral

Health Practitioner who is able to carry out

routine dentistry alongside our clinicians.

At Portmore we are lucky enough to have

three Dental Therapists within the team;

they are able carry out white fillings and

tooth whitening treatments as prescribed

by your dentist. Other services include

applying fluoride, taking x-rays, dietary

advice and counselling, help with smoking

cessation and anxiety control alongside

providing your regular oral healthcare,

cleaning & polishing requirements.

In particular, our Therapists have a strong

interest in paediatric treatment and

have great experience in working with

children and getting little ones used to

the dental environment whilst promoting

long term health and preventative care.

Our Therapists play a key role in our team

working alongside our clinical team, to

ensure we offer our patients the best

bespoke care available.

OUR DENTAL THERAPISTS PROVIDE A FANTASTIC SERVICE FOR OUR PATIENTS, THEIR SCOPE OF PRACTICE MEANS THAT OUR PATIENTS CAN ENJOY THE BENEFITS OF INCREASED ACCESS TO ORAL CARE & CHILDREN CAN RECEIVE SPECIALISED PAEDIATRIC CARE.

What are veneers?

In dentistry, a veneer is a

very thin layer of material

(usually porcelain) placed

over a tooth, either to

improve the aesthetics

(appearance) of a tooth or to

protect the tooth’s surface

from damage. The tooth

or teeth are usually slightly

recontoured or shaped

and the porcelain veneer

is bonded to the enamel

surface.

How do I know if I am

suitable for veneers?

Veneers can fix most of

the aesthetic issues that

patients have with their

teeth. In many instances,

dental veneers can be used

to correct the following:

• Stains

• Chipped/broken teeth

• Crooked/misaligned teeth

• Gaps between teeth

• Holes or fractures

Not everyone with the

above issues will be a

candidate for dental

veneers.  A comprehensive

examination and history

will be taken by your dentist

before deciding if you are

suitable for veneers.

How long do veneers last?

Will I need to have then

replaced?

Studies show that most

veneers last an average of

10 years but there are many

cases where veneers will

last 20yrs+. The lifespan of

these restorations depend

on the maintenance which

will be similar to that of

natural teeth including

regular reviews and hygiene

visits. Veneers do not fail

all at once and it is usually a

single veneer in-between

multiple others that will

need replacing if it happens.

How long does the

process take?

The most important step in

the process is the planning.

Information and records

are taken to create a wax

mock-up of the planned

veneers. The final result

can then be viewed by the

patient and the dentist

before starting the process.

The actual preparation and

placement of veneers can

take anything from a few

days to two weeks.

My previous dentist

advised that veneers

damage my natural teeth,

is this true?

In some cases veneers

would be a total elective

cosmetic procedure and

shaping and contouring of

the enamel needs to take

place to accommodate the

placement of the veneers.

That said some veneers

are extremely thin (less

than 1mm) and require

minimal or no preparation

of existing enamel. In other

cases veneers can be used

to restore function of the

teeth and can actually help

to promote the longevity of

all the teeth.

I don’t want bright, white

teeth, how do you make

sure they look natural?

The art and science of

porcelain veneers depend

on the study of healthy,

natural teeth. The perfect

veneer and smile make over

result will mimic a natural,

healthy smile. During

the temporary phase the

appearance of the new

teeth can be evaluated and

changed to get that natural,

healthy appearance.

My two front teeth are

very crooked, will veneers

solve this?

Veneers are only one of the

solutions used to improve the

appearance of crooked teeth.

Braces, composite bonding

and cosmetic recontouring

can also be used in these

cases. Your dentist will

be happy to discuss these

options with you and decide

which way is the best to go

for your specific situation.

Why choose Portmore

for veneers?

All three the dentists at

Portmore have attended

numerous postgraduate

studies in the field of smile

makeovers and placing of

porcelain veneers. These

studies have taken them

all over the world including

New York, Miami, Germany

and Spain. Between them

they have placed thousands

of veneers and made

hundreds of patients happy

with their smiles.

TEAM Q&A

Q1: What is your role

at Portmore, what do

you do on a day to

day basis?

My role at Portmore

is a receptionist or

as a Director of first

impressions. My main

role is checking in and out

patients and answering the

phones. There is a lot more

that goes on but I think they

are my main duties. Making

people feel welcome when

they walk through the door

because often people are

nervous and greeting them

with a smile can put them

at ease.

Q2: What is your

favourite aspect of

your role?

My favourite aspect of

my role is getting to know

our patients, having a little

chat with people each time

they come in. We’re very

lucky here that we have

such friendly patients.

Another is that I get to

spend the day with such a

fantastic group of people.

It’s a pleasure coming in

everyday and we never

stop laughing. I feel very

fortunate that I work here.

Q3: If I wasn’t working

at Portmore I would be…?

If I wasn’t working at

Portmore I would be filling

my days with dog walking,

horse riding (I don’t have

a dog or a horse), reading

trashy novels and watching

rubbish on TV. If money

were no object, I would

be a lady that lunches,

shopping and holidays a

plenty.

TEAM Q&AQ4: My guilty

pleasure is…

My guilty pleasures are

70’s love songs, spending

the day in my pyjamas,

eating crisps and drinking

Baileys. Who wouldn’t love a

day with all that combined?

Q5: Outside of work

I love…

Outside of work I love to

go to an old country pub

and sit by the fire in the

winter and walking along

the river on a hot sunny

day in the summer. I really

love music festivals but

don’t go as often as I would

like. Last year I brought

myself a beautiful bicycle

that I loved to go out on

but I am a fair weather

cyclist so that has been put

away for the winter.

Q6: What I will be

doing in 2015…

2015 will be a big year

for me as I’m getting

married in September so

there is lots of organising

to do.. and dieting! Our

Honeymoon is in October

which I’m very much

looking forward to.Also

Mandy and I have started

to organise our summer

event for the staff. We

have been asked to keep it

a secret from the girls so

it will be a lovely surprise

come July. We are also

doing The Moon Walk in

May. There is so much I’m

looking forward to this

year. I think it’s going to be

a good one.
