“It is a huge job. To restore forest cover to 8% of Kenya means we’ll have to plant 80 million seedlings everyyear for the next five years.”

In 2004, over 8000 plant species wereassessed as being at risk of becomingextinct. That was 70% of all plantspecies assessed; over 300,000 plantspecies were not assessed. In theaverage territory, over 53 plant specieswere at risk of local extinction. Mostof the plant species shown here existin only one territory.

The most plant species assessed as atrisk are in Ecuador; 74% of 2467 localspecies assessed there were classed asthreatened species. Next is Malaysia, with 58% of the 1177 local speciesassessed as threatened species. Thirdis China: at 71% of 627 local plantspecies. Then Indonesia: 56% of 686.All other territories had assessed fewerthan 600 plant species.

•Data are from the International Union forConservation of Nature and Natural Resources2006 Red List of Threatened Species.

• *The denominator is 1000 local plant and animalspecies assessed for Threatened Species criteria.46 territories recorded no plant species at riskof extinction.

• See website for further information.

Territory size shows the proportion of plant speciesassessed as locally at risk of extinction worldwide, thatare found there.
