Physical and Chemical CHANGES
Physical Changes
Matter changes size, shape or form. It does not become
a new substance.
Examples
Breaking something (glass)
Ripping Paper
Mixing items with
no chemical reaction
Clay
Cutting hair
Cutting materials or food into tiny pieces
Freeze or melt water
Mow grass
Writing on paper or board
Chemical Changes
Changes the substance into a new substance.
Examples
Fire burning
Apple turning brown
Milk souring
Mixing baking soda and vinegar
Eating food/Digesting food
Rusting

Physical and Chemical PROPERTIES
Physical Properties
A quality or characteristic of something that you can touch, see,
smell, taste, or hear.
Observe these two chemicals and write the physical properties.
Examples:
Mass-amount of matter in an object
Volume- How much space an object takes up.
Color
Texture- Identifying quality of the object (rough, smooth,
etc.)
Odor
Phase/State – solid, liquid or gas
Hardness/Malliability- How well an object resists scratching
Flexibility- Bending without breaking
Holds shape/takes shape of container- liquid takes the shape
of a container.
Chemical Properties
Qualities or characteristics that can only be seen when
a substance reacts with another substance.
Examples:
Flammability- ability of a substance to burn or ignite
Reactivity- Rate at which a chemical substance
undergoes a chemical change. Ex: Two chemicals might
react together to form a toxic gas.
