Empty land, broken heartsMELISSA PAPIER
IT was an emotional day inTafelsig lastThursdayas the lastof the remaining families livingon vacant land were removed bythe Anti-Land Invasion Unit.
Those removed were part of agroup of backyard dwellers whohad set up homes on plots at Ka-pteinsklip Station and SwartklipSports Field in May. People’s Postpreviously reported on the unrestand court proceedings surroundingthe evictions (“Weekend of vio-lence”, 17 May, and “Voter turnoutstrong amid protests”, 24 May).
Last Tuesday, the Western CapeHigh Court ruled in favour of theCity of Cape Town’s move to havethe land invaders evicted from theland on Thursday. The WesternCape High Court also recently or-dered a criminal investigation intothe causes behind the invasion.
The backyarders, desperate forhousing, flocked onto the land after, the weekend before the local gov-
ernment elections, members of theMitchell’s Plain Backyard Dwell-ers’ and Residents’ Association(MPBYRA) called on them to takeaction. The invasion turned vio-lent, and many people were injured.
In a prior ruling, Judge NathanErasmus said certain “opportun-ists” had misled the communityand abused a vulnerable and des-perate group of people with thepromise of land for housing (“Evict-ed”, People’s Post, 6 September).
In May, the invaders said mem-bers of the backyard dwellers’ asso-ciation had given them stampedand signed documents indicatingthe City had given its blessing to oc-cupy the land.
Charles Adams, chairperson oftheMPBYRA, says theorganisationwould like to “continue support-ing” the backyard dwellers, but“was ordered by the court to stayaway from them”.
“Those people are now on theirown, as we were ordered not to gonear them. Some of those peoplehave given statements against us,
which has resulted in an investiga-tion against us.”
Some of the families were takento Blikkiesdorp, with others beingreferred to private land in Kalkfon-tein. However, when the familiesarrived in Kalkfontein, locals re-fused to allow them access to theland.
The land in Kalkfontein was ap-parently made available to theevicted families by landowner Eb-rahiem Abrahams.
Tygerburger – People’s Post’s sis-ter paper – reported that Abrahamshad been met with hostility by thelocals over his offer.
The unyielding residents said theland had been earmarked for achurch, and refused to make wayfor the homeless families.
The locals also questioned whyKalkfontein backyard dwellerscould not occupy the land when“outsiders” were allowed to do so.
“The land has been vacant for 10years, and no one has made the ef-fort to develop the land,” Abrahamssaid.
He confirmed he had agreed togive the land to the community fora church, but ran out of patiencewhen the community could not de-cided on what type of church shouldbe built.
Johannes Pula, chairperson ofthe Kalkfontein Development Fo-rum, says residents fear that, should the Tafelsig backyard dwell-ers take occupancy, housing prob-lems in the community will be exac-erbated.
“Our residents are already sit-ting with a problem where peopledon’t have houses,” Pula says.“There is a housing backlog withmany backyard dwellers. We arejust scared that people will now ille-gally start to squat on the landshould theybeallowed erect shackson the land.”
Instead, Pula says, forum mem-bers feel the City should negotiatethe establishment of communityhousing projects with the commu-nity.

Weekend crime blitzMELISSA PAPIER
DRUGS, guns and ammunition weredragged off the streets during crimeprevention operations held by theMitchell’s Plain police at the weekend.
Officers started their run of high-visibil-ity operations on Friday morning, with theintensity dropping off yesterday (Monday)morning; over the period, 49 suspects werearrested for various crimes.
Relating some of the successes, Consta-ble Jerome Voegt, spokesperson for Mitch-
ell’s Plain Police Station, says officers onvehicle patrol in Aloe Street, Lentegeur, onFriday afternoon put their instincts togood use when they decided to take a closerlook at a man they spotted.
“The man was stopped, and in his posses-sion members found 14 small packets ofcontaining dagga,” Voegt says.
An 18 year-old man was arrested afterthe find.
“Later that same afternoon, officerswere doing another routine vehicle patrolin Perdeberg Street, Tafelsig, when theynoticed a suspicious-looking man walking
in the street. The man was stopped, and inhis possession they found a .38 Rossi re-volver with five live rounds,” says Voegt.
An 18-year-old man was arrested in con-nection with this.
Near the end of the routine operationsyesterday morning, officers reacted to in-formation given to them after a safe wasstolen.
Following up, they searched a vehicleparked in First Avenue, Eastridge.
“Members recovered the safe and foundinside a Luger 9mm pistol with 21 liverounds – and 50 Mandrax tablets hidden in-side the vehicle,” Voegt says.
The suspects are set to appear soon in theMitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court.
See page 5 for more details.
For the recordLAST week People’s Post incorrectly reportedthat Cornelius Basson was the chairperson ofthe Merrydale Community Policing Forum(“Lentegeur tense after shootings”, 27 Septem-ber). Basson is actually the chairperson of theMerrydale Community Forum. People’s Postapologises for the error, whichoccurredduringthe subbing process.
TRANSFORMATION: Over 2 000“Moving Planet” cleanenergy demonstrations took place on Saturday in180 countries around the world. Capetonians turned out in the city centrefor a dazzling parade that included thetalents of a marching band, and handmade floats on totally fossil fuelfreeshopping trollies. Many organisationscollaborated to make the Cape Townevent a success, and the diverse participants put a big emphasis on creativity. Organisers 350 had five focusesfor the Moving Planet drive – renewable energy, recycling, greening, eating local and using public transportover private cars. Capetonian participants honoured this by using Metrorail to travel to and from the event, with Metrorail allowing bicycles ontotrains for an extra R10. To see morephotos, visit www.350.org.

TOURIST TRACTION: These colourfullycostumed dancers, backed by the rhythmic pulsing of a group of drummers, were seen performing outside the Golden Restaurant atCape Town Central Railway Station on Monday last week – the eve of World TourismDay. Celebrated on 27 September each year, the day is earmarked by the United Nationsto honour tourism and its social, economic and environmental benefits. This year’stheme, “Linking Cultures”, perfectly captured Cape Town’s rich heritage and culturaldiversity. The Mother City is on the eve of two important cultural announcements: Thismonth, residents will find out whether their city has been chosen as the World DesignCapital for 2014; and on 11 November, it will be known whether Table Mountain hasmade it onto the list as one of the new Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Thin blue lineA CAPE TOWN car thief died at the weekend, allegedly at the hands of an SAPS officer inAthlone, addingyet another statistic to the in-creasing rate of police shootings nationally.
While police gave chase, the man drivingthe car failed to stop as instructed, and wasfatally wounded.
The SAPS illustrated a steady increase inthe number of public claims for shootings bypolice in a report released last week.
Based on figures for the year ending March2010, these claims increased nationally fromR426 million to R526 million. Claims for po-lice assault reportedly increased fromR380 million to R506 million. While nationalPolice commissioner Bheki Cele says not allsuch claims are substantiated, the sharp in-crease remains a worrying indicator.
Intimidation and unwarranted violence bypolice in many communities are serious real-ities. Some don’t recognise the SAPS as a po-lice service, but rather a militaristic groupwielding almost absolute state-bestowed pow-er. While allegations of corruption within theranks remain rife, police remain at logger-heads with residents.
Some suggest the trouble is only worsenedby a lack of training and quality recruitment. But is the root of the problem inherited froma society in which the vast majority of thepopulace feared and loathed the police? Thisis very possible.
While stats like those released last week areconcerning, the SAPS are in some regardsmaking an effort. The more buy-in there isfrom the public for initiatives like communi-ty policing, hopefully, the better public andpolice will relate to one another.
And while organisations such as the Inde-pendent Complaints Directorate remain opento listen to grievances, we remain on the righttrack. It is true that SA officers have a longway to go to entrench themselves into somecommunities, but the fight to take this placeis a noble one, and entirely worth its weightin gold.

The alcoholic advert agenda
Giving heartfelt thanks amid grief
IT was interesting to hear that there are pro-posals to ban all alcohol advertisements, which in turn will hopefully discourage, itseems, alcohol abuse tendencies fromour cit-izenry of all ages.
Of course, there was a response from busi-nesses whose prime sole income is from thesale of alcohol, and some voiced their dismaythat it will effect their sales and, in turn, cur-rent and future employees status statistics(employment). Whether we, the public, arefor or against alcohol in whatever degree itis consumed,we realise that there are effects, which start in some cases in the foetal stageof our development as human beings.
The sober decision to ban all alcohol adver-tisements is to achieve a result like the speedreduction proposal to curb carnage on ourhighways and byways (speed kills), and theonly way to achieve a result in this case,
when you apply logic, is to drastically in-crease the price of alcohol at the counter.
Why this statement? Because when the to-bacco advertisements and related issues(smoking causes cancer) surrounding themwere banned, that did not stop the majorityof smokers puffing; no, it was the yearlybudget speech which increased sin taxes, and this in turn led to the decrease in ciga-rette packet sales – but the increase in thesale of loose cigarettes due to the INCREAS-ES implemented by the shop owners.
If we keep the above in mind it will resultin alcohol businesses still operating, but theconsumption will be decreased by the con-sumer due to the price increase of the alcohol
Survey any customer or consumer: If anitem becomes expensive, the result is lessbought.KEITH BLAKE

Top of the local popsANDRE BAKKES
ORGANISERS are gearing up for two mo-mentous Die Burger Pops concerts onSunday 16 October, with a host of stellarnames already signed up.
The stars will be coming out for “free” ona day when the audience and performers willbe doing their bit to make this Christmas alittle merrier for needy children.
People’s Post caught up with two of the art-ists – mother and daughter Madeegha Andersand Jawaahier Petersen – to hear theirthoughts on the upcoming Die Burger Pops.
“When I was approached, I was quite takenaback,” says Anders.
She looks almost as young as Petersen, butshe refuses to give her age, and answers in-stead, “Whoever guesses right wins a prize!”
She continues, “With the amount of talentwe have in Cape Town, it was a surprise tobe asked. There are like a zillion artists inCape Town.
“We look forward to it very much, and I wasgiven a song I’ve always wanted to do. It waswritten by a very talented woman – my grootpêl – Mynie Grové. She’s just it!”
All the artists will be on stage for the open-ing and final songs, and in between they willeach grace the stage for a particular song.
Petersen is also “ecstatic” with her choiceof song, but she doesn’t want to divulge whatit will be. She will also be one of the BurgerPops guest presenters for Kyk-Net, which issomething she says she has looked forwardto her whole life.
“There will be a big band on stage with arunning theme of ‘Swing’. The scale of theshow will be a few notches up from whatwe’re used to,” Anders continues.
For someone who has been performing infront of audiences her whole life, it is some-what surprising to hear that Anders still getsbutterflies before she goes on stage.
“I feel sick,” she smiles. “I get so nervousI can’t eat! But all this just adds to the per-formance. I think you actually need the but-terflies to deliver a great show.”
Joining them on stage will be AndréSchwartz, Sarah Theron, Lize Beekman, Ned-ine Blom, Johnny Davids, Zanne Stapelberg,Gugulethu Tenors, Elle Amor, Rocco de Vil-liers, Hilandi du Toit and Chad Saaiman – toname but a few. The proceeds will be fun-nelled into community empowerment; muchof the money raised will help three charityorganisations – the ACVV, Badisa and Mfe-sane – give youths a merry Christmas and alife filled with opportunities.
Die Burger Pops will hit the Artscape witha matinee at 14:00 and an evening show at19:00. Tickets cost R80, R150 and R220 throughfrom Computicket. A special family packagefor the matinee is also available.

IN THE KNOW: Subcouncil 12 chairperson Edward Andrews (at the back)stands proudly with the newly certified ladies.
Vito fires his way into record booksASIMPLE South African
pastime got a braai-hardlocal into the record books andnabbed him the accolade of thelongest braai when he tamedhot coals for 32 hours straighton Heritage Day.
Vito Polera, a representative ofFruit and Veg City, fired his wayinto history when he beat previ-ous record holder Jan Braai’s 28-and-a-half hour stint by almostfour hours at the Food Lover’sMarket in Willowbridge.
The record setting attempt wasa Fruit and Veg City initiative.
Says Polera: “It was not as hardas I thought it would be, becausethe weather was good, and manylocals popped in to spur me on.”
He adds that the victory is morespecial as it was done on HeritageDay.
“There’s nothing like a goodbraai to show how much we havein common as South Africans.”
Brian Coppin, CEO and co-founder of Fruit and Veg City, says the idea was for Fruit andVeg City to show support for theone day in the year when our com-mon heritage as South Africans iscelebrated around a piece of meaton coals.
“Breaking the record set by JanBraai is about keeping the recordin South Africa – there have beenmany contenders for the title
since last year, but Fruit and VegCity is the first challenger tobring out an adjudicator fromGuinness World Records to en-sure it’s appropriately verifiedand official.”
In the time it took to set therecord – from Friday 23 Septem-ber at 09:00 to Saturday 24 Septem-ber at 17:17 – Vito braaied 74kg ofmeat, enough to feed 1 300 peoplethrough Fruit and Veg City’s cor-porate social responsibility part-ner, Foodbank.
Through Foodbank, Fruit andVeg City was able to feed 1 300 in-dividuals in need of hot meals onHeritage Day. The Food Lover’sMarket sold boerewors rolls andPepsi for R10 – and the proceedswill go to five primary schools inthe area.
During his record-breaker, Pol-era only took two rest breaks, to-talling just 17 minutes, in 32hours.
And this Guinness WorldRecord-setting attempt was notwithout strict regulations. Guin-ness World Record adjudicatorTarika Vara flew in from the UKto ensure the strict criteria weremet.
To meet the specified rules, Pol-era needed to have five types ofmeat cooking at all times, and wasnot allowed any assistance, barmoral support from the many on-lookers. Two cameras were re-
quired to capture every singleminute of the braai, while timekeepers and auditors fromDeloitte were on hand to auditevery moment of the braai.
Polera’s favourite braai fare is“good old Karoo lamb chops”, andthat there’s nothing better than abraai with friends. “My favouriteplace to braai is in my braai kam-er. South Africa’s idea of havinga braai room is indicative of ourpassion for braai – we’ve deviseda way to ensure that we can braairegardless of the weather, for anyoccasion!”
BRAAI ON: Vito Polera in action.

Softball season set to sizzleLYNN PRINS
SOFTBALLERS are set tospend another summer of hot
days on the playing field whenseason kicks off this weekend.
Grass burns will be nursed andpressure will mount as everyoneaims to be the victorious team. Lastseason, Mitchell’s Plain’s SuperLeague team Westridge Yankeestook their game to another levelwhen they were crowned knockoutand league winners – and the pres-sure is on again, as Yankees willhave to work twice as hard to keeptheir titles fromtheir toughcompet-itors.
A lot of interesting moves havebeen made by coaches and players, and spectators can only look for-ward to an exciting and entertain-ing season.
With the likes of Steven Rodkin(former Yankee) now head coach ofGlenthorn A’s, Tanya Price headcoach of Falcons, Bronwyn vanHeerden with Old Mutual Cubs, andNazeem Dulvie, senior SA coach, making his appearance again withthe Yankees, the season is sure tobe a challenging one.
A further shakeup came whenFalcons merged with Norman Hen-shilwood High School in Constan-tia. Rodkin says both he and histeam are very excited for the sea-son. “Last season Glenthorn A’s
came so close to winning the league,so our goal will be to win the leaguethis season. However, winning theleague is a long term goal, and wehave lots of small goals to achieve.”
Rodkin adds that preparation hasbeen difficult, since three of hisplayers are in theSAunder-19 team.
St Martin’s, who were finalistswith Yankees in the knockout lastseason, came blisteringly close toending up fourth on the log for theleague, but Old Mutual Cubsnabbed the position. This season, StMartin’s will be coached by JillianAlexander, who coached GlenthornA’s to second place last season.
Van Heerden, who joined up withOMC Cubs, says: “My feelings to-wards the season are positive – I dobelieve the season will be challeng-ing, as there have been manychanges within the clubs and thelevel is evenly spread, so I am look-ing forward to some good, competi-tive games.
“The OMC Cubs have been work-ing hard, and there is a great mix-ture of youth and experience. Theyare committed to improving theirpersonal game, and uplifting thestandard of play within their club.”
Price, meanwhile, says her teamis ready to take on the season andsecure the title.
“We have goals for the club thisseason, and not just the team. Wehave youngsters we want to developand expose to better coaching and
more opportunities.“The season will definitely be a
competitive one,” she echoes.Yankees coach Dulvie feels simi-
larly: “This season will be a toughone, especially with new team dy-namics, and we’re looking forwardto an exciting, challenging, andcompetitive season, since there are
new moves everywhere.“Our team is definitely ready,
waiting in anticipation.”New players to Yankees’ ranks
are Kaylynn Stoffels (from St Mar-tins), Kim Nicholson (former SAplayer from Falcons, who ostensi-bly retired a season ago), AimeeCampbell (Glenthorn A’s) and Can-
dice Stephens (formerly of Old Mu-tual Cubs, and recently returnedfrom Canada, where she played forCalgary Kaizen). Juliana ForeroBecerra from Colombia will makeher return to Yankees.
Tanta Sports’ Carly Mulder, meanwhile, will now play for Gl-enthorn A’s.

THE City of Cape Town is overjoyed at thenews that the Africa Cup of Nations is com-ing to South Africa in 2013, after an agree-ment between soccer groups in Libya andSouth Africa was ratified by the Confedera-tion of African Football (CAF).
“The biennial Africa Cup of Nations is thecontinent’s premier soccer contest, attract-ing hundreds of thousands of spectatorsfrom all soccer-loving countries,” says coun-cillor Grant Pascoe, the City’s Mayoral Com-mittee member for Tourism, Events andMarketing.
“We are excited that the event is comingto South Africa in 2013. This is a fitting trib-ute to South Africa, following its successfulhosting of the 2010 Fifa World Cup.
“The City is ready to work with the SAFootball Association (Safa) with the hope ofhosting some of the tournament’s majorgames in Cape Town.
“We will support the Safa in its bid to usethe event to further showcase the country’sabilities and organisational capacity.
“Cape Town looks forward to being an in-tegral part of this continental event.”
A ride of fun and fellowshipIRMA TITUS
THE YOUTHS of New Apostolic Church(NAC) branches from around the Cape cele-brated Heritage Day with some serious fun inthe sun at the famous South African themepark – Ratanga Junction. More than twohours before the park’s gates opened, wellover 6 000 youths and ministers convergedoutside its fences. Tickets had been availablesince August, and were reported to be com-pletely sold out on the day.
The biggest attraction was the wild rollercoaster that everyone knows as the “Cobra”.Most of the youths had no problems standingin the long lines – for up to half an hour – toget their few moments of adrenalin overload.
The youths were also entertained with per-formances by the park’s resident characters, but the youngsters themselves owned thestage, as the programme mostly showcasedtalent from the various NAC Cape congrega-tions, who came from as far off as Wellingtonand Port Elizabeth.

World Cup watch – and yet more rulesLYNN PRINS
THE road to the quarterfinals for Eng-land nearly ended on Saturday.
Scotland nearly dominated the team, butChris Ashton’s 78th-minute try left the Scotswith a disappointing 16-12 defeat; their onlyhope to remain in the tournament rode on aloss by Argentina, but this proved in vain.
SA also had a shaky match when theyplayed the Samoans in a fiercely physicalclash that sent Frans Steyn, who had been anoutstanding replacement inside centre, homewith an injury.
SA still managed to win their Friday match13-5 through good defensive play.
On Saturday, another major upset was seenwhen Tonga beat France 19-14, and Australiabeat Russia 68-22. On Sunday, meanwhile, Ar-gentina crushed Scotland’s dreams whenthey beat Georgia 25-7, with host team NewZealand destroying the Canadians 79-15 andIreland grabbing a 36-6 win from the Italians.
This Saturday, the first quarterfinal matchwill be played by Ireland and Wales at 07:00in Wellington; at 09:30, England takes on
France in Auckland. SouthAfricanow facesAustralia inthe quarterfinal on Sundayat 07:00 in Wellington, andNew Zealand will play Ar-gentina at 09:30 in Auckland.
SA wasn’t the only team tosuffer a casualty during theferocious games; New Zea-land supporters also lost flyhalf Dan Carter to an injury– he’ll be out for the rest ofthe tournament.
Looking back at last week,People’s Post explained therules around penalty kicks, free kicks and the 22m drop-out. This week, People’s Postwill focus on the rugby markand hand-offs.
Rugby markThis rule is used infrequently – when iso-
lated – to get out of trouble. It’s normally the fullback or winger who
catches a ball on the fly, but it could be anyplayer who grabs it after it’s been kickedahead by the opposition and has not yet
touched the ground. If the player about to
catch the ball is about tobe tackled by oppositionplayers – and is in histeam’s own 22m or in-goalarea – he can call“MARK!” if he makes aclean catch (it’s still okayif the ball has touched anypart of the goal posts).
After being taken down, play will resume on the“marked” spot, with thecatcher’s team in posses-sion.
Hand-offsThe stiff-arm fend,
known as a hand-off, is atactic employed by theball-carrier. Ball-carriers
run towards defenders, who are attemptingto tackle them.
By positioning the ball securely in onearm, the ball-carrier can fully extend his oth-er arm, palm-out, locking his elbow.
The ball-carrier uses this hand to shove his
opponents away at the chest or shoulder. The fend is a push, not a strike.
A stiff-arm fend may cause the tackler tofall to the ground, taking him out of the play.
• Next week People’ Post will focus on whathappens after the mark is called, and on in-goals.

Softballers hit theSoftballers hit thepitch swingingpitch swingingLYNN PRINS
A WEEKEND training camp in CapeTown showed just how fearless the
under-19 softball women are.
The squad of 20 are definitely not afraidof swinging a bat facing decent fast pitching,or throwing a ball from the outfield to naila runner; as the saying goes, “Dynamitecomes in small packages.”
Getting ready for the upcoming JuniorWomen’s World Championship (JWWC), thegirls took on Falcons super league team ina warm-up match on Saturday, and playeddouble matches against Westridge Yankeeson Sunday, showing dynamic character to-ward both teams.
However, Lester Smith, coach of the SAunder-19s, feels that there is still a lot of prep-aration ahead.
“This weekend was our first match situa-tions, and I am not entirely satisfied with thegirls’ performances – there still needs to bea lot of hard work before we can actually beready to take on the world championship.”
The women train on Wednesdays and Sat-urdays, and hit the gym on Tuesdays at theSports Science Institute.
Leading up to the JWWC, People’s Postaims to profile a couple of players everyweek to introduce them to the public.
• First up is Western Province player Kath-ryn van Boom (17). This Grade 11 student atBergvliet High School plays as catcher forTanta Sport.
Her hobbies include reading and, ofcourse, playing sport; she enjoys the musicof The Arrows, James Morrison, and AliciaKeys, with her favourite actor being BenStiller.
The burgeoning sportswoman – whose fa-vourite foods are lasagne and steak – hassome serious life goals: She wants to studyat UCT’s Health Science Faculty, and to con-tinue representing her country in softball.
Her motivational quote is, “Never be satis-fied with what you achieve, because it allpales in comparison with what you are capa-ble of doing in the future.”
• KwaZulu-Natal’s Julia Meaker, also aged17, plays for Ashleys and takes up outfieldand catcher positions.
Currently in Grade 11 at Durban Girls’High School, her hobbies include mountainbiking, touch rugby and hockey. She enjoysa variety of old and new music, and her fa-vourite actor is Ryan Reynolds.
Her power foods are pasta and pizza, andher life goal is “to be the best me I can be”.She’s driven by two motivational quotes:“The harder you fall, the higher youbounce,” and, “Adversity can either breakyou or make you break records.”
