TRY TO RELATE: KEEP FISH OFF
YOUR PLATE.— SAMANTHA BARKS
Dear Animal Times Reader,
PETA Honorary Director Sam Simon died
in March (see page 9). If you ever heard
about his great heart for animals, please do
something kind in his memory. Here’s one
small idea:
Years ago, I set a trap in a new
neighborhood of townhouses where
someone had spotted a stray. When I
checked the trap, hidden in thick greenery,
there was a golden-brown dog inside.
Seeing me, he became frantic, banging
himself against the trap walls. I spoke to
him, but he looked fiercely at me as if
to say, “No human will ever touch me.”
Gently, I lifted the trap door, leash in hand,
but he was clever and, with all his might,
he pushed past me. From the bushes came
his mate and pup. They had been watching
silently. Now, overcome with joy, they
bounded back into the woods.
In Washington, D.C., there are still woods
hugging the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal
where mules once pulled boats. The deer
who hide there come out at dusk. One
night, a raccoon emerged and tried to cross
a street, perhaps hoping to find a morsel in
a fast-food restaurant bin. She was hit and
killed by a passing SUV. But not all animals
die outright: Recently, a PETA fieldworker
spotted a fox lying motionless beside the
highway, cars whizzing by. She was still
alive, a devastating reminder to stop and
check on even immobile animals and
provide help where needed.
Woods vanish. Houses and roads pop up
where vegetation used to be. Woodland
once used for dens and burrows, containing
berries and plants to feed animal families,
a stream perhaps – gone.
We must look out for animal victims of
the death traps we create: chimneys, glass
windows, highways. I found a sparrow
stuck in the tar used to seal cracks in
pavement. Luckily, the worst of it came
off with scissors and nail polish remover. I
released her in time for her to join her flock
in the trees before nightfall.
For all animals,

WHAT YOUCAN DO TOHELP!
PETA’s ANIMAL TIMES® 3
Ethical
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
We are taught the Golden Rule as
children, and all major religions teach
principles of nonviolence and kindness.
The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said,
“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice
everywhere.” Ethical treatment – the Golden
Rule – must be extended to all living beings:
reptiles, mammals, fish, insects, birds,
amphibians and crustaceans.
Would we imprison our children in cages
so small that they could barely move? Would
we steal our sisters’ babies and eat them?
Would we deliberately infect our friends
with diseases? Of course not. So how – by
claiming to be “superior” or “different” –
can we do such abominable things to other
living beings? Why not, instead, abandon
the archaic and unjust boundary of “human”
that we use to justify inflicting pain, suffering
and death on billions of beings?
All living beings share the desire to live.
We all feel pain, joy, grief and pleasure. We
all have worth.
Treatment
Animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, use for entertainment or abuse in any other way.
All living beings desire the freedom to
live a good and relatively natural life
according to their inherent needs and
instincts. While it is impossible to eliminate
all suffering, human beings can easily stop
deliberately inflicting suffering on other
beings for our own purposes. We lose
nothing in replacing a cheeseburger with a
veggie burger or a leather purse with a fabric
one. But when we forgo our responsibility
to be kind, those we exploit lose their liberty
and their lives just for our fleeting fancy.
We grow up being taught old
discriminatory habits. We are pretty much
fooled into eating the flesh of some animals
and ignoring the cries of hunted animals
while breeding “pets” to cuddle. We grow
up confused. As adults, most of us are
disturbed if we see animals being tortured
and killed, yet we purchase and consume the
flesh, fur, milk and skin of our fellow living
beings every day. We work hard to deceive
ourselves in order to maintain the illusion of a
real distinction between humans and animals.
Instead, we should dispel that illusion.
Threats of economic collapse, defiant
claims of inherent rights and the resistance
to change – these tired arguments have been
heard and overcome many times throughout
history. Every time a boundary shifts, the
suffragists, abolitionists or emancipators are
at first ridiculed for their defense of equality.
Eventually, the false impressions are thrown
out and freedom is won – for women, blacks,
Christians, gays, Asians, Jews. Let freedom
from oppression now include all beings.
Animals
We are all animals.
Human beings have few unique
capabilities. All animals use language,
enjoy complex social bonds, sacrifice
pleasure for the good of others, use
tools, imagine and dream. Everyone plays
with friends, enjoys intimacy and mourns
the loss of loved ones. Some animals have
enormous capabilities beyond our own – in
navigation, endurance, communication and
detection of natural phenomena such as
approaching storms and drought. No one
who has studied other animals doubts that
they are whole, intelligent and thoughtful.
Regardless of any living being’s
capabilities, from the human infant to the
chimpanzee who outwits college students
in computer games, no one deserves to be
abused. All living beings deserve respect and
consideration of their interests, not because
they share the characteristics we admire
in ourselves but because they are all living
beings in their own right. We share the same
Earth, and we are ruled by the same laws
of nature. Let’s do our part to bring about
animal liberation.
People
I am you, only different.
Human beings have justified wars,
slavery and sexual violence through the
belief that those who are different are
not worthy of moral consideration.
The boundaries between “us” and
“them” have changed throughout history,
and we’re horrified now to recall the
abuse inflicted on others once classified as
“outsiders” by societies: the extermination
of Jews by the Nazis, the enslavement of
Africans by American plantation owners
and the slaughter of Christians for
entertainment by the Romans. Laws now
forbid discrimination based on gender, race,
religion, age and sexual orientation. Yet it
was not so long ago that human beings who
were seen as different by those with power
faced torture, exploitation and death.
Our society no longer believes that any
human being has the right to rape, torture
or enslave another. The challenge now is to
wipe away the prejudice that blinds many
people to the need to respect others who
happen not to have been born human
beings.
What PETA Really Stands ForThis year, PETA celebrates 35 years of changing minds and saving lives. But what does “People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals” really mean? It means what it has always meant – acknowledging our similarities and making the world a lot less cruel for all living beings.

PETA AFFILIATES AROUND THE WORLD WIN FOR ANIMALS EVERY DAY.
Pigeon Racers RaidedFollowing PETA’s groundbreaking investigation
into the Taiwan pigeon-racing industry that
revealed high numbers of bird deaths and
widespread gambling, police raided three
pigeon-racing clubs, including the country's
largest, arrested club officials, confiscated
tens of thousands of dollars and froze more
than $4.5 million (£3 million/AUD4.5 million)
in apparent illegal gambling proceeds in the
clubs‘ bank accounts. And in the US, Richard
Wayne Mardis, a supplier of birds to Taiwan,
pleaded “no contest” to felony charges of
violating a gambling law, as first exposed by
PETA’s investigation of the Oklahoma City–
based American Racing Pigeon Union, the
largest pigeon-racing group in America.
Owners of Horrifically Neglected Dog Convicted
Calvin Artis and Stephanie Battle, residents
of Emporia, Virginia, were each sentenced to
12 months in jail, two years of probation and
a lifelong ban on owning companion animals
for chaining their dog, Peaches, to a makeshift
doghouse and allowing a collar to cut 1.5
inches (3.81 cm) into her neck, causing a
putrid and painful wound. When PETA staffers
encountered Peaches, she was chained in
the backyard with no food or water in 36ºF
(2ºC) weather. Artis and Battle relinquished
Peaches, as well as her puppies, who were
placed through the Virginia Beach SPCA.
Cultural Center Rejects Foie Gras
After hearing from PETA UK about the violent
force-feeding of birds to produce foie gras,
Somerset House, a major arts and cultural
center in London, confirmed that it is strictly
foie gras–free.
France Rules: Animals Are Not FurnitureUnder a 200-year-old law, animals in France
were long classified as being on a par with
furniture, but a new law passed by France’s
Parliament elevates domestic and farmed
animals to the status of “living beings capable
of sensitivity.” PETA France and the animal
welfare group Fondation 30 Millions d’Amis
worked to get the landmark law passed,
noting that it will lead to greater legal
protection for animals – especially for farmed
animals, who are included in the law.
DoD to Replace Animals in Training ExercisesAfter years of campaigning by PETA to expose
and end cruel military training exercises
in which thousands of live animals are cut
open, shot, stabbed and blown up, the US
Department of Defense made a landmark
decision to replace animals with superior
human simulators in several key medical
training areas across the entire military. This
is the first time in history that the DoD has
banned the use of animals in training drills,
and the ban applies to six training areas,
including advanced-trauma life support,
neonatal and pediatric resuscitation,
obstetrics and gynecology, nursing anesthesia,
continuing medical-staff skills training and
some field surgical and critical-care training.
Gopher Tortoises Seized From ZooThe Alabama Department of Conservation and
Natural Resources seized at least four gopher
tortoises – a species listed as threatened
under the US Endangered Species Act – from
The Mobile Zoo after PETA pointed out that
Alabama prohibits possessing gopher tortoises
without a permit, which The Mobile Zoo
did not have, and that some of the tortoises
at the zoo had been unlawfully taken from
the wild. According to the agency, the four
were ill with a respiratory illness. Two of the
tortoises reportedly died, but the other two
were released onto private land.
Airline, University Sever SeaWorld TiesAfter hearing from PETA that SeaWorld has
forcibly removed orca calves from their loving
mothers and subjected these and other
animals to lives of deprivation and physical
and psychological suffering in captivity, US
airline Virgin America removed SeaWorld as a
partner in its rewards system. And following
discussions with PETA and a protest on the
campus, California State University–Long
Beach stopped selling discounted tickets to
the theme park.
‘Crush’ Video Makers Sentenced to Life ImprisonmentA Philippine court found Dorma Ridon and
her husband, Vicente, guilty of crimes related
to the production of “crush” videos, in which
scantily clad girls, one of whom was only 12
years old at the time, were filmed stepping
on and crushing live animals to death. This
groundbreaking case was brought to light
by PETA Asia, which notified authorities of
the crimes and worked with them to ensure
that the Ridons were located, investigated,
arrested and prosecuted. The Ridons have
been convicted of child abuse, animal welfare
crimes, human trafficking and wildlife-
protection crimes. They were sentenced
to life imprisonment and ordered to pay
fine totaling more than 9 million pesos (US
$200,500/£127,000/AUD229,500).

VICTORIESfor Animals!
An elephant named Nosey is being
dragged around the United States and
forced to give rides even though she is
hobbled by arthritis. A leading elephant
veterinarian called Nosey’s case the “worst,
most prolonged documented example
of unalleviated suffering and abuse in an
elephant” that he has ever reviewed.
Nosey’s owner, Hugo Liebel, has racked
up nearly 200 citations for violating the
Animal Welfare Act. But despite the fact
that the US Department of Agriculture
(USDA) is the
only agency
with the power
to help Nosey, it
has refused to
seize her or even
order that she
be taken off the
road.
After hearing from PETA, many venues
have canceled Nosey’s appearances,
including four Texas cities, a winery and a
market in Florida and a festival in Illinois.
The Newsroom star Olivia Munn sent
a letter to US Secretary of Agriculture Tom
Vilsack asking that Nosey be confiscated
and that Liebel’s exhibitor’s license be
permanently revoked.

Horse-Drawn Carriage Business FoldsCarriage for Hire, a horse-drawn carriage
company in Salt Lake City, announced its
closure one year after a horse named Jerry
collapsed while pulling a carriage in 97ºF (36ºC)
heat. Jerry was so weak that he couldn’t get
up, so his handlers tied ropes around him,
dragged him to a trailer and carted him back
to the barn. Despite the company’s efforts to
downplay the incident, it was finally forced
to admit that Jerry later died. Following the
company’s closure, the Salt Lake City Council
unanimously voted to ban cruel and dangerous
horse-drawn carriages. During the debate,
PETA supporters pointed out that horse-drawn
carriages had been involved in dozens of
accidents around the country in recent years
and that more than 30,000 people had signed
a petition in support of a ban.
Poultry Farm Proposal Shot DownAfter receiving more than 26,000 objections
from supporters of PETA UK, the Planning
Committee of Wychavon District Council
voted unanimously to refuse permission for
an intensive broiler chicken farm expansion in
Upton Snodsbury. The proposed facility, which
would have confined 160,000 chickens at a time
to filthy, crowded sheds and was nicknamed
“Chicken City,” was unanimously rejected.
NIH Severs Ties With Seedy Dog DealersUntil recently, dogs who had been picked up
on the street, obtained through “free to a
good home” ads or even stolen from their
own yards could be sold by “Class B” or
“random source” dealers for painful and deadly
experiments in laboratories funded by the US
National Institutes of Health (NIH). But now,
following years of pressure from PETA, other
animal-protection groups, the public and the US
Congress, NIH will no longer allow public funds
to be used on experiments on dogs obtained
from such dealers (it already ended this practice
for cats in 2012).
STILL NEEDS YOU
Take Action for Nosey Today
Please urge the USDA to send Nosey to a reputable sanctuary and to
revoke Liebel’s exhibitor’s license. Visit PETA.org/Nosey to send an
e-mail, or write to: Secretary Tom Vilsack, US Department of Agriculture,
1400 Independence Ave. S.W., Washington, DC 20250.

QMy cousin has cancer. What can I
do to reduce my risk of getting the
disease?
AI urge everyone to follow the six
dietary recommendations to reduce
cancer risk that were recently
published in the Journal of the
American College of Nutrition.
They are:
• Limit or avoid dairy products to reduce
the risk of prostate cancer.
• Consume soy products to reduce the
risk of breast cancer.
• Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables to
reduce the risk of several common types of
cancer.
• Limit or avoid alcohol to reduce the
risk of cancers of the mouth, pharynx, larynx,
esophagus, colon, rectum and breast.
• Avoid red and processed meats to
reduce the risk of cancers of the colon and
rectum.
• Avoid grilled, fried and broiled meats
to reduce the risk of cancers of the colon,
rectum, breast, prostate, kidney and pancreas.
The cancer prevention guidelines
recommend a diet rich in plant-based foods,
and they warn
us about the
association
between cancer and
the consumption of dairy products and of
meats that are red, processed, grilled or well
cooked. The key recommendation is to build
meals around fruits, vegetables, legumes and
whole grains. Plant-based foods provide an
antioxidant boost and help promote a healthy
weight, reducing the risk of developing all
types of cancer. Experts urge the same kind of
precautionary approach as that taken by many
people toward tobacco before smoking bans
were enacted.

“Happiness is what makes you pretty”
is Drew Barrymore’s motto for FLOWER
Beauty, her new cosmetics line. And
she’s among the millions of people who
wouldn’t be happy if they learned that
their beauty products caused animals
to suffer. That’s why FLOWER Beauty
will never conduct, commission or pay
for tests on animals. The company
proudly took its place on PETA’s Beauty
Without Bunnies list of cruelty-free
cosmetics and will carry the cruelty-
free logo on its packaging. “FLOWER
Beauty is about all things good,” said
Barrymore. “Thank you, PETA, for the
acknowledgment of our cruelty-free
brand.”
Another company that deserves special
attention is jane iredale makeup. Currently,
in order to enter the lucrative Chinese
market, cosmetics companies have to pay
to have their products tested on animals.
jane iredale pledged to PETA that it will
never put profits before principles and that
it won’t sell in China until those
requirements are lifted.
PETA continues to work
toward the day when the
Chinese government will
not only end all its animal
testing requirements but
also ban these cruel and
archaic methods, as the
European Union, Israel
and India have
done.

Holly BerryHolly Berry had been kept continuously
chained outdoors in a muddy backyard,
unable to move more than a few feet
in any direction. When PETA staff found
her, she had no food or water and was so
malnourished that almost every bone in
her body was visible. She was dehydrated
and anemic and suffering from a bad case
of heartworms and internal parasites. Holly
Berry’s owner agreed to give her to PETA,
and PETA paid for her medical care and
enlisted the help of the Virginia Beach SPCA
to get her adopted. Holly Berry is now a
healthy dog who loves to run. Instead of
shivering outdoors during frigid winter
nights, she snuggles up on a comfy bed with
her rescued canine “sisters.”
DovesPETA fieldworkers came across a hoarding
situation in which more than 90 ring-necked
doves were living in a small shed filled with
more than a foot of trash and droppings. All
the birds were suffering from dehydration,
malnutrition, respiratory conditions and
parasites. Several had plucked out their
feathers, and two had ulcerated eyes. The
doves were carefully moved to the Virginia
Beach SPCA, where they received veterinary
care, and then PETA donors in Middleburg,
Virginia, converted a horse barn into a
spacious home for them all.

Waheed was rescued by Animal Rahat, a

Animals have lost a stalwart ally with the
passing of PETA Honorary Director and
entertainment giant Sam Simon. Immediately
after Sam was diagnosed with terminal cancer
in 2012, he called
PETA President Ingrid
Newkirk to his
hospital room to help
him draw up a unique
“bucket list.” Sam
didn’t want to climb
Mt. Everest or go
skydiving. He wanted
to save animals.
Sam said that the
last two years were
the happiest of his life. During that time, he
worked with PETA to close two bear pits, rescue
an abused elephant and neglected camel in
India, send two chimpanzees – who had been
kept in solitary confinement at two different
roadside zoos – to a sanctuary, find homes for
hundreds of chinchillas and even save a bull
condemned to death in Ireland for being “gay”.
He took boyish delight in knowing that these
souls were out of their prisons, finally allowed
to run and jump and climb. “I just wanted to
have some days where I get to see animals
walk in grass for the first time,” he said.
“Through PETA, we rescue animals in roadside
zoos and circuses. They are some of the most
abused animals in the
country.”
In his last days,
overcome with
fatigue, Sam woke
up just long enough
to hear that Ringling
Bros. and Barnum
& Bailey Circus
was phasing out
all elephant acts by
2018 – something
that, together with the closure of SeaWorld, he
dreamed of and talked about all the time.

Take a peek inside your

leather gloves or belts? Do
you have a leather wallet or
a jacket with leather trim?
A new PETA Asia eyewitness
investigation has revealed that those
leather accessories may have been made out
of “man’s best friend.”
In eastern China, there are whole towns
devoted to killing dogs to make leather from
their skins. And in those towns, a PETA Asia
investigator obtained never-before-seen
video footage of the dog-leather trade. The
investigator documented that dog skin was

labeled “dog leather,” so there’s no easy way
to tell what you’re buying.
The footage is almost unbearable to
watch. We see a filthy slaughterhouse floor
covered with dog blood and guts. Dog
carcasses hang on hooks. One terrified dog
after another is grabbed roughly around the
neck with metal pincers before being clubbed
over the head with a wooden pole. Some
fall unconscious. Others cry out and writhe
in agony with severe head trauma. Some
struggle to breathe after
their throats are cut, and
PETA Asia‘s investigator reported
that some dogs were still alive as
workers peeled the skin off their bodies.
Dogs who are next in line for slaughter can
smell, hear and see what is happening to
those in front of them. They wail and bark
as a worker hits them and pushes them onto
the killing floor. Many dogs are so terrified
that they climb on top of each other in the
holding area, desperately trying to find a way
out. A worker at the slaughterhouse told
PETA Asia’s investigator that this one facility
kills 100 to 200 dogs every single day.
A PETA investigation found that cats are
also killed for their skins. That investigation
uncovered an animal market in southern

Kisses and HissesKisses to London Mayor Boris Johnson for sticking up
for bears used for their fur. At an event in Washington,
D.C., a PETA spokesperson asked Johnson, “One of
Britain’s most revered designers, Stella McCartney, has
been helping PETA UK to remake The Queen’s Guard’s
bearskin hats in faux fur. It’s the last item of military
gear with real fur on it. … Is that something you
would support?” His reply? “If Stella McCartney can
help save a few bears...then I’m with her!”
Hisses to Google for using a camel to haul a massive
camera through a desert in order to capture a “street
view” of the land. The company could easily have used
a Jeep, dune buggy, small plane or satellite instead.
Kisses to Simon Cowell for refusing to allow footage
of a swim-with-dolphins program on Britain’s The Xtra
Factor. Producers had filmed contestants at a marine
mammal park without Cowell’s knowledge, and when
he caught wind of it, he pulled the footage before it
aired and tweeted to his fans, “I think you all know
my view on cruelty to animals ….”
Hisses to Marisa Tomei for helping to slaughter a lamb
for her dinner. In an interview, Tomei callously laughed
as she recounted how she drove the lamb in her car to
be slaughtered and then held him down.
Kisses to Israel for becoming the first country in the
world to ban horse- and donkey-drawn carts from
its streets. Israel has prevented countless horses and
donkeys from being undernourished, beaten, deprived
of basic veterinary care and forced to work long hours
in the hot sun.
Hisses to Maggie Gyllenhaal for eating a live
langoustine lobster and charred ants. If Gyllenhaal
wants to have an “emotional” dining experience,
she should look squarely at the vegan food that her
husband, Peter Sarsgaard, enjoys.
Kisses to Olympic long jump gold medalist Greg
Rutherford for showing he also has a heart of gold.
While out walking his dogs, Greg discovered an
injured doe, whom he named Doris and carried 2 miles
to his home, where he called the local animal hospital
for help. Although she was later euthanized because
of the severity of her injuries, staff at the animal
hospital stated that Greg’s actions prevented Doris
from experiencing a prolonged and painful death.
WEARINGDOG SKIN? Dog skin was turned into
women’s dress gloves, men’s work gloves and other products that are exported around the world. None of it is labeled “dog leather,” so there’s no easy way to tell what you’re buying.
China where cats and dogs were being
bludgeoned, hanged, bled to death and
strangled with wire nooses so that their fur
could be turned into fur trim and trinkets and
even cat toys. Animals were trucked to the
market in flimsy wire-mesh cages with no food
or water, and some had been on the road for
days. Twenty cats were commonly crammed
into a single small cage. The investigators saw
dogs and cats with open wounds and crushed
paws, dying cats and dogs inside the cages
and dead cats on top of the cages.
Doomed dogs could only watch in terror as other dogs were killed.
Slaughtering covers the ground with blood.
Let Everyone Know Why You Won’t Wear Any LeatherBoycott all leather products. Short of doing a costly
DNA test, if you wear leather, you
have no idea whose skin you’re in
– but you do know that, whatever
the species, animals suffer and die
for leather goods. For shopping
tips, visit PETA.org/Fashion.

Q I have a neighbor who is
always yanking on her dog’s
leash and nagging at him to
hurry up. What can I say?
– Sadie’s Mom
A You could gently mention to
your neighbor that a walk is
precious to dogs, as it’s often
their only chance to explore and
roll in the grass, so it’s important
to give them time to smell things and enjoy
being outside. It’s their walk, after all. No one
should bark orders the whole time. You might
send your neighbor the link to an amusing
video (available at PETA.org/DogWalking)
starring Molly Shannon and her “dog,”
Mike White, with more tips on what (and
what not) to do to make a dog’s walk more
enjoyable.
Q What can I do to encourage
the members of my church to
be kind to animals?
– Born Again Vegan
A Lead by example. If there’s
a potluck or bake sale, take
vegan goodies – and the recipe.
Wear animal-friendly T-shirts
and buttons, post animal rights
information (including this magazine) on the
bulletin board and collect donations to help
animals in your area. Check out PETA’s new
website, JesusPeopleForAnimals.com, for
ideas on engaging your fellow Christians
in animal issues. (Jewish readers can visit
HumaneKosher.com for information about
Judaism and animals, and Muslims can go to
IslamicConcern.com to learn why cruelty to
animals is forbidden in Islam.)
Q I’m getting married soon, and
I want to have an all-vegan
wedding. Any tips?
– Kind Bride
A A wedding is a wonderful
opportunity to show people
how fabulous vegan food can
be. Your caterer and baker don’t
necessarily have to be exclusively
vegan, they just need to be as enthusiastic
as you are about wowing your guests. For
example, PETA staffer Matt Partridge and
his bride, Cholly Molthan, (pictured right)
hired a caterer with no experience in vegan
cooking, but the couple’s feast – which
included Southern fried seitan, crispy tofu
tacos and three pastel-colored cakes – was
so fabulous, it is now included in the chef’s
recipe file. Don’t be shy about offering
recipes and suggestions. Have the caterer
cook a sample meal for you beforehand so
you know you’re on the same page. Find
more tips on finding vegan meal options,
cakes, dresses, tuxes and limos at
PETA.org/VeganWedding.

Top TipBefore their wedding, PETA
staffer Michele White
and her husband-to-be,
Ryan, registered for
items that they knew
PETA’s fieldworkers and
mobile clinics could
use to help animals,
including blankets,

toys and treats, which
they asked guests
to donate to PETA.
“Knowing that I
was helping animals
made the day even
more special,” says

Baked Arancini with Basil and Thyme
2 Tbsp. olive oil
1 medium yellow onion, finely diced
2 cups (420 g) Arborio rice
5 cups (1180 ml) faux-chicken or vegetable stock
¼ cup (25 g) nutritional yeast (optional)
Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
¼ cup (40 g) raw cashews (soaked in water for 2 hours,
then drained)
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup (235 ml) hot water
2 Tbsp. tapioca starch or cornstarch
Spray oil
2 cups (180 g) panko bread crumbs, finely ground
2 Tbsp. dried herbs, such as basil and thyme
¼ cup (25 g) unbleached all-purpose flour
½ cup (115 ml) cold water
• Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Add
the onion and rice and cook, stirring frequently, until the onion is
softened and translucent.
• Add 1 cup (235 ml) of the stock and cook, stirring constantly,
until absorbed. Repeat with the remaining stock. Stir in the
nutritional yeast and season with salt and pepper.
• Blend the cashews, garlic, hot water and tapioca starch in a
blender until completely smooth. Pour into a small saucepan and
cook, whisking constantly, over medium heat until very thick,
about 4 minutes.
• Transfer the risotto and cashew mixture to a large bowl and
stir to combine, then cover and chill in the refrigerator for 1 hour.
• Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C/Gas Mark 6). Coat 2
parchment-lined baking sheets with spray oil.
• Combine the bread crumbs and herbs in a shallow dish. In
another shallow dish, whisk together the flour and ¼ cup (55 ml)
of the cold water to form a smooth paste, then add as much of
the remaining water as needed to form a slurry.
• Scoop a small handful of the risotto and form into a ball. Dip
into the slurry, let the excess liquid drip off, then roll in the bread
crumbs and place on a baking sheet. Repeat the process with the
remaining risotto.
• Spray the tops and sides of the risotto balls generously with
spray oil. Bake until browned and crisp, about 15 to 20 minutes.
Makes 6 to 8 servings
RISOTTO,Dressed for a PartyArancini – from the Italian word for “orange” – are delectably creamy rice balls with a crispy, crunchy coating. This recipe
gets its creaminess from starchy short-grain Arborio rice and an added vegan béchamel sauce. For a healthier twist, the
balls are baked instead of deep fried. With a light coating of bread crumbs and herbs, they will melt in your mouth. Serve
them with a side of marinara or your favorite dipping sauce.

‘Rather Go Naked Than Wear Wool’ Campaign Kicks Off Nude PETA members braved freezing Midwestern
temperatures in a revamp of PETA’s iconic “Rather
Go Naked Than Wear Fur” campaign. PETA’s
recent international exposé of the wool industry
revealed that gentle sheep were punched in the
face, jabbed with electric clippers, slammed into
the floor and stomped on by impatient workers.
Some sheep died from the abuse, including one
whose neck was twisted until it broke.

Month and National Spay/
Neuter Awareness Month, PETA
members dressed as giant,
colorful condoms handed out
leaflets on animal birth control
in both Spanish and English to
people in Washington, D.C.,
“If cats and dogs could wear
condoms, millions of animals
would be spared horrible
suffering,” says PETA’s Daphna
Nachminovitch. “But they can’t,
so PETA is calling on guardians
to be responsible and get them
spayed or neutered.”

Combs is the latest celebrity to go after SeaWorld for
its confinement of orcas and other marine animals. She
stars in a new PETA video in which she calls on moms
to keep their families far away from SeaWorld. Combs
describes the separation of baby orcas from their mothers
at SeaWorld, breaking a bond that, in nature, can last a
lifetime for these sensitive, intelligent animals.

PETA Founder Squeezes Into Cage Outside KFCPETA founder Ingrid Newkirk got tons of media
attention when she caged herself outside a
KFC in Mumbai, India, to deliver this powerful
message: Chickens killed for food endure
immense stress and deprivation in filthy, cramped
cages or sheds before finally being shipped to
slaughterhouses, where they are killed in cruel
and painful ways, so please try going vegan.
WHAT YOUCAN DO TOHELP!
Please visit PETA.org now and
sign a petition to help ensure
that no more animals suffer at
the Kubics’ hands.
Animals Drowned, Frozen Alive in the Pet TradeFor every animal in a pet store display,
there are countless victims behind the
scenes, such as the thousands of animals
who suffered at the hands of Lynn and
Kenneth Kubic at two of their Colorado
facilities, a filthy breeding barn called
Willards Rodent Factory and a pet store
called Jurassic Pets.
After PETA submitted its findings of
neglect and cruelty to animals gathered
during its eyewitness investigation at Jurassic
Pets, police executed a search warrant
and seized more than 100 animals. Video
footage and photographs show that store
staff had attempted
to kill rats and mice by
“whacking” them against
surfaces – leaving some
twitching and gasping
for breath after the
blows – and admitted,
along with Lynn Kubic,
that they freeze rodents
and reptiles to death. The
Kubics and one of their
sons, the store manager,
were charged with a total of 97 counts of
cruelty to animals.
But officials who have jurisdiction over
Willards Rodent Factory have failed to
take action, despite evidence of egregious
cruelty that PETA handed over to them. At
this facility, animals were typically fed only
once a month; food became moldy, was
contaminated with excrement or ran out;
and rats and mice routinely drowned in
flooded tubs. The Kubics denied animals
veterinary care and euthanasia, including
for a weak and thin rat whose facial injuries
were so severe that her nose and upper jaw
were missing.
