Pastor’s Page
As we enter into the most celebrated season of the Christian faith, the one
event that has changed everything - EASTER! Let us come with such a life of
praise and faith that Mount Vernon can see Jesus shining through all of us, we
have been changed folks, we have been redeemed, we have the promise of life af-
ter death, how can we not share this message of hope to everyone? Yes we will
also have heartache as we live Good Friday again and remember all that Jesus
went through for us, but oh what a day of rejoicing as we celebrate His resurrec-
tion! So as we enter this most holy time in our Christian walk, spend time in medi-
tation, prayer, bible reading and worship and let Him touch you, renew your faith
and revive and refresh your baptismal covenant and promises you made to our
Great God and Master!
Here is a wonderful poem I found the other day that I want to share with you.
HEALING AT THE CROSS
We know when Jesus was crucified
Upon the wooden cross,
Our every sin was laid upon Him
All for loving the lost
And we know that when He rose again,
He conquered death and hell
Through His resurrection we have
Eternal life as well
For this we praise our gracious Lord
And thank Him for His love,
For we could never have had this hope
If it wasn't for His spilled blood
But we can know His resurrection power,
Right now, while we are here,
For we can come to the cross of Christ
And lay down our burdens there
~2~ Trinity United Church of Christ, Mt. Vernon, IN April 2017
The Wider Church
For everything that may hold us back,
The hurts from yesterday,
At the foot of the cross we lay it down
And then just walk away
For I believe that there is healing
At the cross of Christ
We do not need to carry these loads,
For they've all been crucified
Receive from Jesus the healing you need
For your spirit, body and soul
Then you can arise, freed from your past
To walk completely whole
For what He accomplished on the cross
Goes on into eternity,
Just reach out your hand and He will too
And receive His victory.

Quarterly Sunday Meal after church: Currently we have a meal to kick off Relay for Life, a picnic and a meal near
Christmas. Pastor Jamie asked if we were interested in having at least a quarterly meal after church. This encourages
fellowship and is an opportunity to meet and greet new families and individuals who are attending church.
We will consider at a future date.
Narcotics Anonymous: There have been multiple complaints about the group hanging around before and after meetings.
Neighbors feel uncomfortable with the group present. Gary Porter and Don Kleinschmidt will be meeting with the
group along with someone from police department on February 23 and ask the group to leave our facilities. We will not
allow them to hold meetings at Trinity. Keys will be collected from the group. We will be asking the police for addi-
tional patrols in our area.
Gary Porter commended Trudy Keach and Dottie Funkhouser for volunteering as teachers for the Sunday School and
Gary and Gerilyn Redman for volunteering to work with the youth group. We have a number of families and youth
who have returned to Trinity and are ready for these services. We are grateful to see this growth.
Gary Ported commented that Pastor Jamie has been doing a great job. We have received many positive comments from
community members.
Pastor Jamie noted that it takes the congregation working together, hosting a variety of activities and inviting families to
visit for us to be successful. He noted our average Sunday attendance was 49 the last 6 months of 2016. Since Pas-
tor Jamie started in January our average Sunday attendance has been 84.
Men’s Lenten Breakfast at Trinity is Saturday, March 18. We will need men to cook the breakfast and be part of the
service. Breakfast is at 7 am with the service at 8 am. The attendance at all Men’s Lenten Breakfasts is down. If
we want them to continue, we need to have a group attend at least some of them.
White folding tables: The Uhde family has requested use of the white folding tables on Saturday, March 25 for the Dia-
betes Poker Run. They will return the tables to the fellowship fall on Saturday evening. Gary Porter moved to allow
the Uhde family use of the white plastic folding tables, Bill Baro seconded and motion carried.
Letter regarding After Prom: A letter was received requesting support for the After Prom program at MVHS. This is a
drug and alcohol free event at the HS. It is a worthy program. Council agreed to research past practice for support and
discuss in March.
Big Brothers, Big Sisters: We need to approve their use of space at Trinity during 2017. Carroll Funkhouser moved to
allow Big Brothers, Big Sisters to use space at Trinity during 2017, Danny Ziegler seconded and motion carried.
Pastor’s Report:
Sacred Harmony Music Group sings Southern gospel music with a contemporary flair. They have won gospel awards.
Pastor Jamie knows the group and would be interested in inviting them to sing at Trinity. Cost is $500 plus a love of-
fering. They prefer to schedule several events in the same area for one week-end in order to save travel expenses. Pas-
tor Jamie to get additional information about their availability in our area during the fall.
Christian Education: Pastor Jamie requests that council put $1000 in the Christian Education fund to allow the purchase
of books, start up materials and VBS materials for our Sunday School and Youth groups. Bill Baro moved that we
place $1,000 into the Christian Education budget, David Uhde seconded and motion carried.
Banners: Pastor Jamie would like several new banners for the church. When he looked on-line, the cost per banner
was approximately $150. He talked with Sarah Becker who said she could design and make the 3 banners he wanted
for approximately $88. Council agreed to reimburse Sarah Becker for cost of materials.
Vacation Week: Pastor Jamie will be taking a week of vacation April 17 to 24. He will arrange with IN-KY confer-
ence for a substitute minister and minister on call during that time.
~8~ Trinity United Church of Christ, Mt. Vernon, IN April 2017
Girl Scout Troop: The local Girl Scout troop is looking for a permanent place to meet. Would Trinity be willing to al-
low them to use one of our meeting rooms? They meet on Monday evenings. Gary Porter moved that we allow the
Girl Scouts to meet at Trinity, Danny Ziegler seconded and motion carried. The Pence Endowment supports both the
Boy and Girl Scouts with funding each year.
List of Persons Moving to Mt. Vernon: A company in Ohio offers a service which provides your organization with a list
of persons who move into your zip code. Pastor Jamie would like to join the service. The cost is approximately $15
per month. He would design a post card to send to the person(s) moving into our area welcoming them and inviting them
to visit at Trinity. Dennis Clark moved to try the service for one year, Judy Heberer seconded and motion carried.
Treasurer’s Report:
Susan Roby reviewed the attached report. January income (all funds) was $18,464. January expenses (all funds) was
$34,218. We had interest income of $1,964. Loss for the month of January was $15,754. Gary Porter moved to accept
the treasurer’s report, David Uhde seconded and motion carried.
Bills: Council reviewed the list of bills to be paid (attached). Gary Porter moved to pay the bills, Danny Ziegler sec-
onded and motion carried.
Committee Reports: There was no report from Finance.
Christian Education: Trudy Keach shared there will be an Easter Egg Hunt on Palm Sunday. She asked about children
walking in church with palm branches.
Spiritual Life: They are visiting a variety of people, including inactive members.
Music and Worship: Pastor Jamie and Cindy Searcy have met to plan music during Easter Season. Trinity is the host of
the community Good Friday service.
Gifts and Bequests: Memorial gifts for Linc Baro will be used for the LED lighting project.
Trustee Report: Carroll Funkhouser and Danny Ziegler gave the report.
There are wasps in the attic and basement which have been sprayed.
Light has been replaced in closet that Pastor uses.
Ice machine has been cleaned and serviced for the year.
Fan and light in the kitchen at parsonage has been replaced.
A bench is being built for Pastor.
Turn gas valve off in kitchen after using the stove. We occasionally smell gas. Shutting the valve off prevents any
leaks.
LED replacement lights are scheduled to arrive by end of February.
e meeting closed with a prayer by Pastor Jamie.
Next Meeting: Monday, March 20, 2017 starting at 6 pm for Safe Church Training
Secretary
Gayle Vogel
