Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
Greetings to you in the matchless name of our Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ. On 7th of August we are observing as the laity Sunday. The la-
ities with spiritual vision, godly attitude and attributes is truly a bless-
ing for any of the congregation, family and society. The Bible tells us
many persons' spiritual highness apart from the called disciples. I
want to call them as the laities who acted as the spiritual generators who tried to inculcate the
gospel values without any hesitation or prejudice. The Centurion (Mathew 8:5-13) stands be-
fore us as a perfect laity who upholds the spiritual values.
The Centurion had never seen Jesus before in his life time nor after his servant had been
healed but only heard of His supernatural healing power. The conversation between Jesus and
him was not direct but through intermediaries. He confesses that he is not worthy to approach
Jesus or Jesus to enter under his roof. If only Jesus send a word of command, his servant
would become well again. To ascertain this he says he is also in authority and gets things
done from his subordinates by ordering them. At this, Jesus marveled at him and exclaimed
that he had not found so great a faith in Israel. Marvel is a term of expression of exuberant
joy when we become spell bound. That means the intensity of our faith can even make Jesus
speechless momentarily. If so, examine ourselves, the depth of our faith in Jesus. Is that great
enough to make Jesus marvel at us also? Here Jesus proclaimed that Centurions faith is
greater than that of His own chosen people of Israel. There are three stupendous qualities in
Him a) His steadfast faith in Jesus' healing power b) His ready admittance of his unworthi-
ness c) His compassion and concern for his sick servant.
Centurion, although being a Roman, knew that his servant is a man created in God's own im-
age and likeness; pleading with Jesus to save him. Here we have to examine ourselves; how
is our attitude when our house maids or their relatives are reported sick or hospitalized? It is
easy to talk hours together about the love, compassion and mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ
even emotionally if the speaker has a rich treasury of vocabulary of any language but it is dif-
ficult to walk the talk. Whereas Jesus walked the talk and talked the walk. The bible says
"For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without work is dead also."
God has given His commandments which all of us know:
1) "Love the Lord, your God........your strength"
You may fill the blanks. And second is this
2) "Love your neighbour as thyself"
In these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets. May God Almighty im-
print these commandments in our mind throughout our pilgrimage in this wilderness.

INSIGHT AND INSPIRATION
THE VALUE OF INTELLECTUAL HUMILITY
We all know what humility is the acceptance of human limitations, the sense that we are not,
and can never be, perfect. Intellectual humility, similarly, is about the acceptance of the limi-
tations of one's own knowledge, and the willingness to learn from others. It is also about not
attributing success solely to one's own brilliance, and failure's to others stupidity. Many
scholars who studied this characteristics say that someone who is intellectually humble is a
better learner, because he\ she is always curious and willing to ask questions and seek further
explanations. In other words, being intellectually humble means you are conscious that there
is so much more to learn that you may have been exposed to so far. Those who are intellectu-
ally humble will have no problem accepting they were wrong, or that they have changed
their mind about some thing, because they begin with the assumption that, they don't always
have to be right. At the same time , it does not mean that you are uncertain or doubtful about
every thing but it is all about holding on to a belief or an idea with 'as much firmness as the
thing demands.'
A teacher who is not afraid of making mistakes, in fact one who acknowledges the mistake
and discusses it ,is a good example of intellectual humility.
It is a challenge to try to develop a characteristics that is valued in the workplace but not
really in the class room. But then, so much of our journey outside school and college ends up
being a process of unlearning the attitudes we have unconsciously acquired. Knowing this,
may be we can start that process a little earlier?
