Extend the Sort
Alternative Sort: Rhyming SortHave children re-sort the cards to make rhyming
pairs. For example: mano/gusano; zapato/gato,
trapo/sapo. Tell children that all cards will not have
a rhyming match. Use the Bonus Words for
additional matches. Then ask them to use each
pair of rhyming words in a sentence.
Vocabulary Building VocabularySome children may think that the pinsapo (fir)
picture card shows pino (pine). Explain that
pinsapo is a type of pino. Tell children that pinsapo
is a term used when being more specific.
Encourage children who have seen a pinsapo or a
pino to share their experiences.
Bonus Words ActivityAsk children to think of other words that end with
-ano, -ato and -apo. Then have them make word
cards for these new words, as well as for the
Bonus Words (rato, marrano, guapo). Children can
work in pairs to sort by word endings.
Teacher TipIf children are working with partners to sort words,
remind them that both children should take part in
the activity. Suggest that one child can place a
card while the other child confirms the placement.
Then children can switch roles.
