Pastor’s Letter November 24/25
Dear Parish Family,
You have probably seen this picture before. It was painted by Norman Rockwell in 1942 and published by the Saturday Evening Post in March of 1943. Though often associated with Thanksgiving, it was actually called Freedom From Want. It was painted as one of a set of four images to illustrate Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Four Freedoms which were spoken to a country in the midst of the Second World War and continuing to recover from the Great Depression. Roosevelt’s Four Freedoms were a vision of future possibility and recovery offered not only to Americans but to the whole world. Note especially how the president added the phrase “everywhere in the world” to each of the freedoms he described in his State of the Union Address in 1941. The Four Freedoms were:
Freedom of Speech—Everywhere in the World Freedom of every person to worship God in their own way—Everywhere in the World Freedom from Want—Everywhere in the world Freedom from Fear — Everywhere in the world
So although the painting was very idyllic, it seems that Rockwell was very aware that not everyone shared such a home banquet. There was much want in the United States and elsewhere in the world. So the Four Freedoms were also a dream and hope for what was not yet complete. There was much work to do before everyone in the world would share these freedoms. But this dream was itself an inspiration and the Four Freedoms were adopted by the United Nations among its postwar goals. This Thanksgiving weekend is also the Feast of Christ the King. This feast calls us to celebrate the hope that God’s rule, the establishment of a kingdom of justice and peace, is a universal hope. It belongs to every person regardless of where they live or where they were born. It is important to remember that one of the marks of our church, and the meaning of the word Catholicism itself, is to be universal. The Feast of Christ the King helps us to want for others those things which are most precious to us.
Thanksgiving for All
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Rev. Michael A. Vetrano, Pastor

Lessons and Carols is a traditional Advent Service that began in King’s College, Cambridge, England in 1918. This historic service includes Old and New Testament readings anticipating the birth of our Savior, followed by the singing of a carol appropriate for that reading. Our program will consist of nine readings (lessons) and songs (carols).

Religious Education
We know and love the Catholic Faith because, over many years, women and men have practiced the Faith
and passed it on to us. We “pay it forward.”
We pass on the Faith by our attitudes and actions in many ways.
Serving as a catechist is a particular way of doing this.
If you still need to register your child for the religious education program, download four documents with registration information from the Religious Education link on the parish website. Mail the registration form and the fee to the parish office or bring it to the rectory. We need to receive the form and payment and have them processed before a student can be enrolled in the program. If registration material is received by Tuesday, students can attend the program the following Wednesday or Sunday.
If you are interested in assisting with the religious education program by serving as a catechist or substitute or in any other capacity, e-mail Sister Cathy Stare at [email protected]

BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE November is a month or remembrance for all those who have died. Our church has the custom of giving a place of honor to a book in which parishioners write the names of their deceased. We recall and pray for our beloved dead, trusting in God's eternal love and mercy to welcome them into the glory of heaven. We invite you to share this time of remembrance by writing in the book the names of those friends and loved ones who have fallen asleep in Christ. The book will be conveniently located in front of the Blessed Mother.
We remember those parishioners who passed away since our last All Souls Day
The souls of the just are in the hands of God

The Diocese of Rockville Centre provides both information and support services in regard to
the Life issues, particularly in regard to crisis pregnancy, when abortion is being considered
as the only way out of a difficult situation. There is a diocesan outreach program, with a 24-
hour confidential hotline, where a woman with an unexpected pregnancy can turn for help:
call 1-855-301-4247, or a call can be made to OPTIONLINE at 1-800-712-HELP(4347).
Eucharistic Adoration
Become an Anchor of Prayer for Family Life The Catechism quotes Saint John Paul II: “The Church and the world have a great need for Eucharistic worship. Jesus awaits us in this sacrament of love. Let us not refuse the time to go to meet him in adoration, in contemplation full of faith, and open to making amends for the serious offenses and crimes of the world. Let our adoration never cease. Our parish will have an hour of Eucharistic Adoration following the noon mass on Fridays. We would like to dedicate this hour as a time of contemplation and reflection to pray especially for our families. For strength in family life, for the return of family members to the church, for healing and reconciliation within families that are hurting.
Once again we come to the end of the liturgical year with the Feast of Christ the King, a somewhat
difficult title for most of us in modern times. While kings still exist in some countries, we’ve never
had an earthly king in the USA, so our understanding of kingship is a bit skewed. The tendency is to
think of a king as an autocratic ruler with extreme wealth and power, but that certainly does not describe Christ the King, so what do we do? Do we scrap the title or redefine king? If we look at
Sunday’s Gospel, we may get a little help with an answer. Jesus tells Pilate he came into this world “to
testify to the truth." The natural question to follow was Pilate’s, “What is truth?” If we look at Jesus’s
life, we should get an idea. It is being true to God who is unconditional love, limitless generosity,
enduring patience, and infinite mercy, and it is all these things for everyone without exception.
