It was a busy August. First there was the Olympics,
Anime Festival Orlando, Star Wars Celebration VI, and then
Chicon 7, the 70th Worldcon that came right after.
I will be working on my Star Wars Celebration VI
report next month and my Worldcon report for the month after
that. There may even be some material from Dragoncon.
On Spetember 25, the Enizain will be showing
Farenheit 451 directed by Francois Truffaut and based on sthe
story by Ray Bradbury. The showing is part of the cult movie
series.
As always I am willing to take submissions.

Anime Festival Orlando 13
Anime Festival Orlando took place on August 3-5, 2012
at Wyndham Resort Orlando on International Drive. The Guests
of Honor were Grey DeLisle (Mandy, Grim Adventures of Billy
and Mandy), DC Douglas (Albert Wesker, Resident Evil series),
Richard Epcar (Vince Grant, Robotech) , Jason David Frank
(Green and White Ranger, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers),
Kyle Hebert (Aizen, Bleach), Jason Andrew Narvy (Skull,
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers), Dan Southworth (Eric Mey-
ers, Power Rangers:Time Force), Ellyn Stern (Haraway, Ghost
in the Shell 2:Innocence),Sonny Strait (Krillian, Dragonball Z),
and Tara Strong (Barbara Gordon, Batman:The Animated Se-
ries).
Larry Furry examined the The Robotech Legacy. The
bulk of the panel was a presentation of a documentary included
on the last DVD release of Robotech. It contained interviews
from the voice actors and the production team. It was done after
Robotech creator and producer Carl Macek’s death, and was ded-
icated to him. During the talk Richard Epcar and Ellyn Stern
dropped by. Epcar was in the original show and two of the se-
quel shows. Stern, Epcar’s wife, also worked on Robotech
providing the voices for the background characters. They ex-
plained that they had to do their recording sessions late at night
since that was the only time the studio could fit them in. This
was especially difficult for them since they had just had a baby.
They enjoy going to conventions and hoped to see the audience at
their own talk the next day. Furry then showed a clip of Ro-
botech: Love Live Alive, an adaptation of Genesis Climber
Mospeada: Love Live Alive Original Animation Video (OAV).
I then did a presentation of Legend of the Galactic He-
roes. This is an OAV series which consists of 162 episodes, 2
specials and one feature film. It is a space opera about the con-
flict between the Galactic Empire and the Free Planet Alliance.
The drivers of the story are Reinhard von Logengram, admiral of
Galactic Empire and Yang Wen-li, admiral of Free Planet Al-
laince. The show was based on a 10 volume novel series by Yo-
shi Tanaka. The story concentrates on politics and logistics as
well as action. Due to licensing issues there is no legal English
translation available. After the presentation I answered some
questions from the audience. The big question was will there
ever be a legal English release of the anime or book series. There
is still hope that both may happen.
The Daytona College anime club did a presentation on
the 20 best anime opening credit sequences ever. I missed the
first one but below is list of 1-19:
Pokeman (both Japanese and English version)
Dragonball Z
Outlaw Star
Tenjho Tenge
Digimon
Angel Beats
High School of the Dead
Darker than Black Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (first
season)
Gurren Lagann
Eden of the East Inu Yasha (fourth opening)
Future Diary (tie) Bleach (third opening) & Naruto (second
opening)
Fate Stay the Night
Trigun
Cowboy Bebop
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Gundam G Tom Croom and Ken Nabbe gave their Dare! The
Transformers Panel. Croom had taken some screen shots of the
original classic show, revealing some amusing signage among the
buildings. Many had misspellings and most them were a bare
descriptions of the businesses in those buildings. Then they
showed the openings of the other Japanese Transformers series
not released in the US. After years of doing their presentation no
one has ever guessed who the lamest Transformer is according to
Croom and Nabbe. They say it is Cosmos because his alternate

the story including Mike are penguins.
There were 25 entries in the Anime Music Video Con-
test this year. It is under new management. My only complaint
is that the info card before the entries only had the creator and
title of the video and not the song and source of the footage.
Some of the videos can be found on animevideos.org and on
YouTube.

of Quantum of Solace to the footage of Black
Cat Best Comedy – Michelle Bureau

I did a presentation on Japanese science fiction novels.
I started with brief history of translations of Japanese books and
then discussed the new book line at Viz called Haiksaru. The
books I discussed were as follows:
Yukikaze by Choei Kambayashi – Earth is at war
with aliens. A pilot with his plane Yukikaze
fly dangerous missions to gather information
on the enemy.
The Ouroboros Wave by Jyouji Hayashi – A black
hole is discovered at the edge of the solar sys-
tem and mankind tries to harness its power.
Slum Online by Hiroshi Sakurazaka – A young
man tries to become the champion in an online
game and questions his goal.
Harmony by Project Itoh – The world has em-
braced a form of interactive health care. Is the
world better for it? Can the system be mis-
used?
Book of Heroes by Miyuki Miyabe – A young girl
searches for her brother in a world influenced
by stories.
Rocket Girls by Housuke Nojiri – An independent
space program may get off the ground by using
young teenage girls as their astronaunts.
I checked out the following films at the video room.
Interstella 5555 – A music video done to the
music of Daft Punk’s “Discovery” album.
The story is about an alien rock band kid-
napped to Earth by nefarious forces. The
animation was done by the legendary Leiji

form is a flying saucer and this goes against the idea that Trans-
formers use their ability to change forms to blend into the back-
ground. I was always fond of Cosmos because he is a spaceship
and I like his saucer design.
Clarissa Graffeo gave a presentation on JoJo’s Bizarre
Adventures. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventures is a manga series by
Hirohiko Araki. The series follows the Joestar family dealings
with the supernatural starting in the 1800s. There are over 100
manga volumes to the series. Graffeo described each part of the
series describing their characters and plot. There will be an Eng-
lish release for the third manga story arc as well as for the new
anime series being produced.
Kent Ward of Propeller Anime (a local anime club)
discussed Anime Directors You Should Know. Ward believed
there are some great directors that do not get the attention they
deserve. Ward gave some background on each director, show
clips of their work and if possible, an interview. The directors
Ward mentioned were:
Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell features and
Metropolis)
Yoshiaki Kawajiri (Lensman, Ninja Scroll, Vam-
pire Hunter D: Bloodlust)
Hideki Anno (Neon Genesis Evangelion)
Satashi Kon (Paprika, Millenium Actress, Para-
noia Agent)
Daryl Surat, Clarissa Graffeo and Gerald Rathkolb of
the Anime World Order podcast showed Ten Anime You Have
Never Seen Before. Most of the anime shown in this presenta-
tion were from the 1980s. They were:
Future Police Urashima – A man from 1980s finds
himself in 2050 and a big chunk of his memory
missing. He joins the police force and tries to
figure out his past.
Blazing Transfer Student – Takizawa Noburo is
sent to a school where all disputes are settled
through fighting.
Natsuki Crisis – A young martial artist helps out
one of her classmates
Yatterman – Two friends with mecha fight an evil
gang in this light-hearted adventure.
The Flying Phantom Ship – The Phantom ship
sends the robot which killed a young man’s
parents; now he seeks revenge against the own-
er of the ship.
Gosenzo-sama Banbanzai! – A young woman vis-
its a family and claims to be a descendant of
their seventeen-year-old son.
Bagi, The Mighty Monster of Nature – A woman
with cat-like powers and her friend set out to
find the truth behind her origins. (directed by
anime and manga legend Osamu Tezuka )
Queen Millenia – Humans face invaders from a
planet entering the Solar System. (based on a
manga written by Leiji Matsumoto who also co
-created Space Battleship Yamato)
Crystal Triangle – An archeologist is looking for
the Message of God and has to confront those
who are also trying to find the message.

Matsumoto (designer and co-writer of Space Battleship Yamato and creator of Captain Harlock and
Galaxy Express 999)
From Up on Poppy Hill – The latest from Studio Ghibli. It is an adaptation of a manga drawn by Chizuru
Takahashi and written by Tetsurō Sayama. It was directed by Goro Miyazaki, son of Hayao Miyazaki.
It is set in 1963 in Japan. A teenage girl helps save the school clubhouse from demolition. At the
same time she deals with the loss of her father and her feelings to a fellow student.
I also went to hear Tara Strong and Grey Delisle talk, spent a little time in a trivia contest led by the crew from the
Practical Futilities table from the Dealers Room, and saw a panel tracing the history of Kamen Rider.
It was a great AFO. Next year AFO will be at the Wyndham which will be going through some major renovations.
It will be interesting to see how the facility will changes.
