PRINCIPAL’S NEWS - Jodie Corrigan It has been another very busy week and, as I keep being reminded, the days to
the end of the year are counting down very quickly! There is a lot happening
between now and the end of the year so keep an eye on the School Calendar, our
Facebook page and School Stream for updated information. As I mentioned last
week, the date for Presentation Day needed to be changed as the original date
clashed with Swansea High School. The new date is Tuesday, 13 December
starting at 9:30am. Parents and careers of students receiving an award will be
notified by mail next week.
Last Thursday our Indigenous Students were luck enough to be invited to go on a
Cultural Bus Tour of the local area with Aunty Phyllis Darcy and students from
Caves Beach PS and Pelican PS. They learnt about local history, dreaming
stories and spent time at Swansea Heads hearing local stories. I was able to
spend time with them at Swansea Heads listening to the stories, talking with the
students and enjoying meeting Aunty Phyllis. It was a fantastic day and all of our
students hope to get other opportunities to join with local schools for cultural trips.
The organising teacher from Caves Beach commended our students on their
respectful attitude and behaviour! We are very thankful to Caves Beach PS for
sharing this experience with us.
We are busy planning for the many end of
year activities and would like all Parent
Helpers to save Thursday, 8 December
from 1.40pm to come and join us for
afternoon tea so we can thank you for
everything you do with us and your
children.

Kindergarten News
We have continued our Smiling Mind mindfulness sessions this week and have
been using the Extended Bubble Journey track to help us focus on our
breathing and being ‘in the moment’. I can see improvement in students’ ability
to allow their bodies to remain still and relax.
Kindergarten made dragonfly sculptures in Art yesterday, using clay and
rainbow wire. They had to mold the clay, bend and twist wire and insert it into
the clay. It was fabulous watching students who had finished volunteering to
help their classmates with their wire. They are such a thoughtful and caring
group of children.
There are only 26 days left and we have many activities planned. Keep an eye
out for event information and notes. We are looking forward to our excursion
coming up soon and to our Dog Safety Visit tomorrow (no note required for this).
On the last day of the year we hold our student Talent Quest. Entry is free. Talk
to your child to see if there is anything they would like to do, such as a dance, a
song or a magic trick. They may enter as an individual or as part of a group. It is
always a very entertaining event.

Class 1/2 News
The Stars of the Week are Taleah and Aamon. Well done Lisa, Josh, Taleah,
Ossian, Scarlett, Sophie and Mya who were Star Readers last week.
Thank you to those who were able to support and attend our school disco last
night!
This week we were very excited to welcome Lucia to our class and hope she is
enjoying her first week at our school!
We are still continuing with the Smiling Mind program and this week have begun
a new topic in our social skills program: Joining In and Including Others. We will
be talking about how to do this and keeping a class record of how many times
we can join in games and include others.

Class 2/3 News
Congratulations to our star spellers Chase and Kyan.
This week in Maths, we have started revising fractions. We will continue this
next week.
The students looked at perspective in art and investigated light in science. Ask
your child about the peek-box we used to consolidate what we learned.
Students are still enjoying participating in the Smiling Mind meditation program,
with many saying it is their favourite part of the day.
If you could please start sending in your child’s portfolio so we can fill it with all
their wonderful work from the second half of the year.

Quote of the Week
Our days are happier
when we give people a
bit of our heart rather
than a piece of our
mind.

Did you know? Sympathy is the feeling
of being sorry for
someone’s misfortune.
Compassion is feeling
sorry and actively
wanting to help.
Empathy requires that
you step outside your
own emotions to view
things entirely from the
perspective of the other
person.
5-6 News The class has been exploring information reports and introduced me to the school by
writing one on NWPS.
The students have been showing their skills when multiplying fractions by whole
numbers.
5/6 showed some smooth moves as they practiced the heel and toe polka and the
barn dance in preparation for the Year 6 farewell.
They enjoyed themselves at the disco last night dancing and playing games. Jay P
put on an awesome limbo display being crowned the winner.
This week the students began their “Kindness Matters” task which we look to build
upon over the next couple of weeks.
Next Wednesday, 16 November the Year 5 students running for the 2017 Leadership
group will be giving their speeches at 1pm in the Library. All welcome.

Awabakal Cultural Excursion—A recount by Beau, Kye and Sophie
First, we drove to a lagoon in Blacksmiths. We got told a dream time story there
about how the lagoon was formed by an Aboriginal Elder. We also learnt about WW2
and how Australia was planning to stop the tanks coming through.
We then went to Coon Island and learned about how the Aboriginals hunted there
and how it became Coon Island. We were also supposed to see Sugar Loaf Mountain
but the bushfires blocked our view.
Last of all we went to Swansea Heads, had lunch and then walked along the beach
until we stopped at a well known historical Aboriginal site. We got told another
interesting Dreamtime story about, how 2 sisters brought a stranger into their tribe
and because of their actions they got turned into stone. Now you will be able to go to
the remains of the 2 Sisters.
We then went onto making ochre and we learnt how to grind it down so we could
paint ourselves.
That is how our day ended.
In our opinion it was a fantastic day and would love to go again. We also recommend
this to other students.
