MP David Willets wrote in the latest Hayling Islander
about, ‘the enormous energy and imagination that goes
into the flow of productions at HIADS’. Well we haven’t
disappointed with the great entertainment we’ve
brought to Hayling over the past few weeks.
In the middle of March our play WIFE AFTER DEATH
was a record breaking box office sell-out, described in
the Islander as ‘a triumph’ and Katie’s direction as ‘not
short of genius’. Particular mention must go to Lesley
Liggett, who played Laura. Lesley, a new member,
built a superb and totally believable character, and we
look forward to seeing Lesley in many mare HIADS
productions.
Our visiting performers also provided superb enter-
tainment starting with the touring company, Forest
Forge’s production LEAVES ON A LINE. The extreme-
ly talented cast of three sang, played and acted on a
highly imaginative set using models, projection, hand
held camera work and local lighting to bring us the
story of a baby abandoned on a deserted railway plat-
form and how that one event changed three peoples
lives.
The 1958 Chuck Berry Rock’n’Roll classic, Johnny B.
Goode, tells of the country boy who could play the gui-
tar like ringing a bell. Well James Golden of the
GOLDEN SHADOWS sure could play the guitar, and
with singer Lee Austin he gave us a great evening of
50’s rock classics, chat, wit and even a competition
with an ‘amazing’ prize! The five piece band recreated
the 1950’s sound using exact replica equipment includ-
ing the guitars drums and even the amplification.
Finally, before HIADS launches itself into Happiest
Days rehearsals, we welcomed back our old friends
HMS with their excellent production of 70 GIRLS 70.
By Kander and Ebb, writers of such great musicals as
Cabaret and Chicago we knew we were in for a treat
and we weren’t disappointed. The show followed a
group of senior citizens living on New York’s Upper
West Side who regain their zest for life by forming themselves into a gang of thieves. Perfect entertain-
ment for the Easter Holiday!
Happy Days!

Save our Bar!: Final update. In the last Newsletter we explained that the theatre is a public building and needs an operating licence, which
means that we must nominate a member as the contact person for the local authority, fire, police, customs and ex-
cise etc. As we also wish to serve alcohol the nominated person, or Designated Premises Supervisor (DPS) must hold
a Personal Alcohol Licence.
John Duncan, who has been DPS for a number of years retired on 31 March, and we thank John for his long and
dedicated service. To gain a Personal Alcohol Licence involves a short course and exam, a police check and an appli-
cation to Havant Council.
We are pleased to announce that the two members; BOB TOBIN and ADRIAN TREW who agreed to take the course
and apply for a Personal Licence, have both passed the exam and police check and will now be applying for their
licenses. All this is a fairly long process, so for continuity, and to ensure our bar remains open, Laurie has taken
over as DPS as from 1st April and will hand over this responsibility hopefully later this year.
‘THE HAPPIEST DAYS OF YOUR LIFE’ a farce by John Dighton
boy’s school just after the second world war, is as
listed below. This will be another great HIADS pro-
duction, not to be missed!

Our Bar Manager, Judy writes...
It’s just over a year now since taking over the Bar and things are going very well. I would like to thank all
the Members who have supported the Bar in that time, and to those who have stepped in at short notice when need-
ed.
We have a few new members who have joined HIADS and worked behind the bar, its fun and a good way of getting
to know our members and meeting our patrons, so if you would like to give it a try ! give me a call: 023 9271 6978
And on the subject of theatre bars and drinking….
THE PRODUCTION TEAM:

Lighting Operator Scott Hawley Sound Operator Isabel Hudson

HIADS Wardrobe needs your help! As reported in the last Newsletter, we are still looking for a Wardrobe Manager. That doesn't mean someone who will
provide costumes for each production. Any member could costume a play in agreement with the Wardrobe Manager and the Di-
rector. The Manager, who will have an interest in costume and drama, will offer help and support but could also, if they wish, be
more deeply involved. If this role sounds interesting please email [email protected]. or call 023 9246 9416.

HIADS OCTOBER PLAY
3 to 10 October.
We welcome Andy Griffiths to his
HIADS directing debut in this 1980’s
John Godber play. Andy joined HI-
ADS when we moved to the Station
Theatre and has acted in more that
30 plays since 1996. But his drama,
and directing, experience date back
long before that to his Mancunian
roots, so he is not short of expertise.
Salt of the Earth is set in Yorkshire
and follows the lives of three genera-
tions of the same family from 1947
to the 1990s.

Don’t Forget to be Awesome!!
This is the title of our HIYA show
this year. HIYA are working ex-
tremely hard this year creating, de-
vising and directing their original
plays.
The whole group have been split into
4 smaller groups and each given a
different genre to work with, there-
fore our show this year will be made
up of 4 small one act plays that the
youth group members have created
themselves.
We will see a hilarious comedy, a
terrifying thriller, a fun loving fairy
tale, and a whodunit mime. In-
trigued? Good. Come and see our
talented young actors and actresses
showcasing their hard work and pas-
sion.

INSURANCE:
Our secretary has found a Personal
Injury Police that covers members
up to the age of 85. Our current
policy is due for renewal in May
and we will review how this new
policy affects us. More in our next
Newsletter.
BUILDING WORK
The first and fifth arcade doors are
now bricked up and the builders
have done an excellent job match-
ing the existing brickwork, a re-
quirement of HBC. The remaining
three doors will be replaced with
timber doors, similar to those al-
ready fitted. This work was essential
due to wet rot which had eaten its
way into all the original doors.
THEATRE LEASE
As you will know the theatre lease
expires in 2017. Negotiations with
our landlords, HBC are on-going,
and to date either an extension of
the existing lease or a new lease
with similar terms seems a very
promising result. So, we may soon
have anther 20 years in front of us!
CALLING ALL ACTORS! Reading and Auditions for Dick Barton!
DICK BARTON
HIADS AUGUST PLAY
1 to 8 August.
Based on the 1940s BBC radio seri-
al, this fast paced romp is a mix-
ture of homage and camp spoof. In-
trepid sleuth Dick Barton, gabardine
collar up and trilby at rakish angle,
soon finds himself wrapped up in an
adventure soaked with intrigue and
mystery.
Characters:
The play was originally performed with the following characters doubled as
noted.
Dick Barton/Snowy White Marta Heartburn/Daphne Fritters
Jock BBC Anouncer/Colonel Gardener
Baron Scarheart Sir Stanley Fritters/Lady Laxington
The character of Dick/Snowy has to be played by the same actor as it is inte-
gral to the plot. The other characters can all be played by different actors or
doubled as above. In addition to the main characters there are some wonder-
ful cameo roles and a horde of supporting cast who would double up as stage
crew/dressers etc.. So if you want to be a convict/burgler/nightcluber/
reporter and/or dancing girl, this is your big chance. There is no limit to the
number of supporting cast but at least 6 will be needed and possibly as
many as 12.

A gripping, acclaimed thriller that tells the incredible true story of unsung war hero Alan Turing, the British math-
ematician responsible for cracking the German Enigma code during World War II. Benedict Cumberbatch and Kei-
ra Knightley star as Turing and his ally and fellow code-breaker Joan Clarke, alongside a top-notch cast, including
Matthew Goode, Mark Strong, Rory Kinnear, Charles Dance, Allen Leech and Matthew Beard.

lady, a thoughtful lady and a wise
lady. Maybe different descriptions,
but one thing everybody agreed up-
on was that she certainly was a
‘Lovely Lady’. Beryl was also a
member of the Bowls Club and
we’re sure she had other local inter-
ests. She will be sorely missed.
Her funeral will take place at Hav-
ant Crematorium on 7 April at
4.45pm.
No flowers, donations to Rowan’s
Hospice. HIADS will donate
£250.00.
We were reminded recently that not
all members would know how much
HIADS donates to local and national
charities. HIADS has donated sums
from £250 to over £1000 to Cancer
charities, Alzheimer's Society, Ro-
wan’s Hospice and the Mayor’s of
Havant and Gosport charities. Our
‘Santa Sleigh Runs’ with the Lions
Club, raised £250 in 2013 which we
donated to Cancer Research. In 2014
two runs raised nearly £500. £250
was given to Epilepsy Action via
Beachlands and the balance will go to
Rowans in memory of Beryl Boulton.

HIADS Donates!! We were saddened to learn that one
of our FoH and Box Office stalwarts,
Beryl Wright-Boulton passed away
on 7 April. Beryl, although suffering
with macular degeneration, took
everything in her stride without
complaint. Originally from Birming-
ham, Beryl lived for more than 30
years in Langston, where she
worked for 20 years as secretary to
the Langston Harbour Master. She
and her husband of 59 years, John,
moved to Hayling just over a year
ago and during her time at HIADS

HIADS always needs more support,
apart from us, there are so many
others who want to perform in our
wonderful theatre and there is only
so much we can do to support this.
As always we need more help
FRONT OF HOUSE and on the
BAR.
Also, as reported in our last News-
letter, Our PUBLICITY committee
needs members to help with every-
thing from bright ideas to poster
delivery. One area where everyone
can help is flyer distribution. If you
are a member of a club, visit a local
pub or restaurant, why not take a
handful of flyers with you and
ask if you can leave them.
Another area that is very im-
portant to HIADS is our SOCIAL
activities. We thank Sue and her
team for parties, natter nights,
quiz nights and BBQs. Please
support these events but the
team also need ‘ideas’. What
would you like your social team
to be doing? Let us know.
