Achilleion Palace
• It was built between 1889-1891 by the Italian architect Raffaello Carito
• In 1919 the Achilleion was bought off by the Greek State
• It was used as military headquarters and as a hospital

• It was the Palace of British Commissioner Adams
• It is one of the biggest Palaces in Greece • Today it is a museum of Classical Asian Art

Integration of Corfu into UNESCO In 2007 the old Town of Corfu is incorporated into UNESCO’s list of World Heritage • It is converted into a living Museum • It enters a protection program • It is characterized by Authenticity and Integrity
It is a remarkable example of an architectural
entity and has unique types of buildings representing a particular state of human history
• Parks, squares, gardens and in general the beauty of natural environment create a place of serenity and harmony
• it has managed to maintain its historic monuments in a very good condition during all these years.
Goals and Actions Management Plan (2006 – 2012) The Actions are: 1. Effective management of the Monument to be promoted
2. Unique values to be assured and preserved
3. The Old Town of Corfu to be protected and promoted as a living and as an economically
active town having the advantage of its “operation” as a town-monument
4. Services of the Town to be improved ensuring some prerequisites in order for residents and visitors to enjoy and understand the value of the Monument
5. Expansion of interest and participation regarding the Town’s heritage 6. A common consciousness to be formed for the management of Corfu on a local, national
and international level.
