This is a written submission in regards to the Melbourne City Council meeting scheduled for Tuesday
22 March 2016 to be held in Council Chambers. In particular this written submission relates to -
Agenda Item 7.1 Proposed travel by Councillor Arron Wood, Participation in Divest Invest Conference
Sydney 5 April 2016
Councillors should support the recommendation from the management (Item 11) "That Council
approves the proposal by Councillor Arron Wood to participate in the Divest-Invest Conference in
Sydney on 5 April 2016. Participation in this conference is essential for the City of Melbourne to
continue the important work that was undertaken by its active participation in the United Nations
Framework Convention Climate Change Conference that was held in December 2015 in Paris (COP 21).
This involvement in both national and international conferences concerning climate science and
strategic approaches to renewable energies ensures that the City of Melbourne is positioning itself to
be in a better posture to ensure a better and brighter future for the citizens of Melbourne.
After reading the Report to Council concerning the Proposal to travel by Councillor Arron Wood,
Participation in Divest Invest Conference Sydney 5 April 2016 Councillors should reaffirm its
commitment to clean energy through its investments.
Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria on the 16th March 2016 released a Landscape Succession Strategy that
will guide the management of Melbourne Gardens into the next century – launching it 170 years to the
day when land for Melbourne’s much-loved botanic gardens was set aside on the south bank of the
Yarra River.
The initial concerted planting strategy at the royal Botanic Gardens was undertaken by Ferdinand
Mueller, appointed Victoria's first State Government Botanist by Charles Joseph La Trobe.Ferdinand
Mueller was the Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens (RBG) in the period from 1857 to 1873. Mueller
was a firm believer in improving the scientific knowledge of the Victorian community. By participating
in the Paris climate talks (COP 21) and having active involvement in this Divest-Invest Conference in
Sydney in April 2016, City of Melbourne is improving the knowledge base of the citizens of Melbourne,
and being faithful to Muellers scientific legacy.
City of Melbourne has a working relationship with the RBG and should continue to strengthen its
bonds of friendship by discussing with RBG management its involvement and participation in the
Divest-Invest Conference in Sydney on 5 April 2016.
On Wednesday 24 February 2016 the Department of Agriculture and Food of the Government of
Western Australia released a report detailing the developing climate systems in Australia (AEGIC New
Australian Climate Developing).
Much can be achieved to ensure that Melbourne has a better and brighter future and after perusing
through this report from Western Australia, one can see the importance of the City of Melbourne being
an active participant of the Divest-Invest Conference in Sydney on 5 April 2016.
Yours sincerely

Divest-Invest Conference: Councillor Arron Wood’s proposed attendance
Please write your submission in the space provided below and submit by no later than noon on the day
of the scheduled meeting. We encourage you to make your submission as early as possible.
22 March 2016
Divest-Invest Conference
Dear Councillors,
I am a Melbourne based barrister with a strong interest in climate action and renewable energy and I
support Councillor Arron Wood’s proposed attendance at the forthcoming Divest-Invest Conference in
Sydney.
If the vast majority of respectable climate scientists are correct we are either facing (or close to facing)
a climate emergency. This conference will be at the cutting edge of the growing move for institutional
divestment from fossil fuels as part of the inevitable move to 100% clean renewable energy, with the
enormous investment and job opportunities that this will entail.
I believe that it is vital that the progressive Melbourne City Council is represented at the conference
and that Councillor Wood is an obvious choice as an attendee given his strong track record in the area.
Yours sincerely,
Andrew Laird
