Jack and Rochelle Sutin were heroes of the Jewish Resistance during theSecond World War. They were married on December 31, 1942 — whileliving with a group of Jewish partisans led by Jack — and they enjoyed 68years of deeply loving married life. Rochelle died in December 2010, butJack still lives with her in his heart and he remembers their time togetherwith deep joy and gratitude. It is indeed a remarkable story they shared.

A Message from Charles Selcer,President Sholom Foundation...
This is my first communiqué to our community asSholom Foundation President. Sholom has been servingthe Twin Cities for over 100 years and is positioningitself for another 100 years. The Foundation’s reasonfor being is as stated in its Article of Incorporation:“fundraising devoted to developing and maintaining thepre-eminence, within the greater Minneapolis/St. PaulMetropolitan area, of Sholom directly or indirectly pro-
viding elderly housing and nursing care in accordance within the doctrines, practices and requirements of Judaism.”
At the recent dedication of the Ernest Gallo Sholom FoundationHeritage Wall by the Lynn and Gloria Johnson family, I was not aware ofthe aforementioned wording, but I said “We will be the best, not darngood, not in compliance, but the best and we will settle for no less.” TheArticles of Incorporation say it better. But to become the best we mustreach our goal of a $100 million endowment to lessen our dependencyon finite governmental funding.
I look forward, with your help, to reaching our goals and someday, celebrating my 100th birthday at Sholom.

Jack and Rochelle first met as young teenagers in Poland. They grewup in different towns and had but one notable encounter at a high schooldance at which Jack asked Rochelle to dance but then stepped on andscuffed Rochelle’s new shoes. It was not an auspicious beginning toromance, but love triumphed — eventually — nonetheless.
The intervening events before they met again were tragic — theGerman invasion of eastern Poland and the onset of Nazi genocide againstthe Jews. Ghettos were created in their towns, Mir and Stolpce, and theliquidation of the Jewish populace was underway. Rochelle lost her entirefamily — her father and mother and her two sisters. Jack, who had nosiblings, lost his dear mother, but his father survived and became part ofJack’s partisan group after they both managed to escape from the MirGhetto. Rochelle, in turn, escaped from the Stolpce Ghetto, though withno knowledge that there were Jewish partisans in the vast woodlands ofeastern Poland, or that Jack was alive and among them.
The chances that Jack and Rochelle would both escape their ghettosand find each other in the woods were remote. But while living in anunderground bunker with his fellow Jewish partisans, Jack had a dream inwhich his mother, Sarah, told him that Rochelle would come to his bunker

On November 2, 2011 the Ernest Gallo SholomFoundation Heritage Society Wall was dedicatedby the Lynn and Gloria Johnson family, who haveestablished the Ernest Gallo Fund for support ofSholom facilities, programs, and services for the elderly.
The Gallo family and executives, in town tocelebrate the partnership between E. & J. Gallo Wineryand Johnson Brothers over the past 50 years, visited theShaller Family Sholom East Campus for the dedication, and saw for themselves the results of a community’scommitment to serving the elderly. The dedicationplaque eloquently reflects on the man being honored:
Ernest Gallo(1909-2007)
Co-founder and patriarch of the E.& J. Gallo Winery.Successful businessman, philanthropist and family man.
Supporter of the State of Israel. His passion, integrity and generosity were a blessingto the many lives he touched. May his memory andcharitable legacy serve as an inspiration to others.
Dedicated by Lynn and Gloria Johnson FamilyDonors to Sholom of the Johnson Center
and Hospice Care Agency
and they would fall in love and spend their livestogether. So convinced by that dream, Jack createda sleeping space beside his own in the very crowdedbunker reserved for Rochelle when she arrived. Hisfellow partisans thought Jack was deluded — butarrive Rochelle did!
Their courtship was rocky at first. Rochelle hadsuffered greatly since the war began and found it hardto believe that Jack was a good and decent man whotruly loved her. Eventually, however, they fell deeplyin love, married and became a devoted couple in themidst of the Holocaust horrors. Jack led raids againstPolish police stations that had collaborated with theNazis; Rochelle played a key role in feeding and caringfor her fellow partisans. Later on, Jack participated inlarge-scale attacks against the Nazi forces, includingthe dynamiting of rail lines and bridges critical toGerman supply lines. In this way, both Jack andRochelle fulfilled their desire to take revenge for thehorrors that had been inflicted on their families andon the Jewish people as a whole.
The rest of their story is history…and a miracle oflove, resistance, courage and survival. Their memoir,Jack and Rochelle: A Holocaust Story of Love andResistance, was published in 1995 and has remained inprint ever since, including translations into Germanand Norwegian. The book was adapted as a play at theStages Theatre in Hopkins, the Theatre Or at the SabesJCC, and also in Pittsburgh.
Jack and Rochelle were constant companions, both
in marriage and in a successful gift import business(Rochelle’s Gifts). They traveled all over the world, enjoyed life, and were blessed with two children —Cecilia, born in a displaced persons camp in Germany, and Larry, born in St. Paul. Their family continuesto grow with three grandchildren — David (Erin)Dobrin, Danny (Andrea) Dobrin, and Sarah Sutin—and two great-grandchildren — Hailey and NylaDobrin.
Rochelle’s family continues to miss her lovingpresence, her deep wisdom and her contagiouslaughter. Her devotion to her family and friends wasdeep and constant, and they will always remember herdelicious home-cooked meals for the High Holidaysand other special occasions. Rochelle often said that thebest revenge against the Holocaust was to survive andenjoy a wonderful life and a loving family. In that, sheand Jack succeeded together.
Fortunately, Rochelle lived to greatly enjoy her timewith her loving great-granddaughter Hailey. Nyla wasborn just a few days before Rochelle’s death. It wouldhave been a great happiness for Rochelle to haveshowered Nyla with the same deep love she gave tothe rest of the family.
Jack and Rochelle had a long and loving marriage. They were extremely devoted to each other. Rochellewas an exceptional person and she remains a rolemodel for everyone who knew and loved her. She wastruly a woman of valor.

Sholom — serving our community . . .Like many other people in the Twin Cities Jewish Community, I always thought that Sholom Home was awonderful facility for senior citizens. I was totally unaware that Sholom is an outstanding, state of the art,well-staffed and completely equipped full service nursing facility for people who require nursing home careeither long term or short term.
I say I was unaware until several months ago, when a member of my family, who is a special needs individual, suddenly came to need a nursing home facility. The available options were dismal and a short stay in a well-known facility made it clear to me that we needed something better and we needed it in a hurry.
It was then that I discovered Sholom HomeWest.
Competent staff made immediate and successful efforts to accept my family member as a Sholom resident.Things got better rapidly. By this I mean a better room, a better environment, better food, and capable andfriendly people. I really cannot say enough about the quality of care we have received.
The entire experience has caused me to reassess the value of Sholom. I have a better understanding of therange of services offered to the community and the high quality of those services.
I am writing to say “thank you” to the admissions team, to the staff at a variety of levels and to theadministration for the excellent job which you are all doing. Our family is most grateful.

Dear Savvy Living,Can you write a column on fire safety tips for seniors? With winter approaching, it’s important that seniorsknow that home fires are far more common and deadlyamong the elderly but there are things they can do toguard against it. Thanks for your help.
You’re right! Often, because of physical limitations, seniors are particularly vulnerable in the event ofa home fire. In fact, according to the U.S. FireAdministration, seniors over the age of 65 are twiceas likely to die or be injured in a home fire thanthose who are younger. For those over 75, the risknearly triples. But with a little awareness and a fewprecautionary tips (see firesafety.gov), seniors can go along way in protecting their property and themselves.
Fire HazardsWhile there are many possible causes of accidentalhome fires, the three most common among theelderly are caused by smoking, cooking andalternative heating devices. Here’s a breakdown ofwhat seniors can do to protect themselves in eachof these key areas.
Smoke Safely: Careless smoking is the leading causeof home fire deaths and the second leading cause ofinjuries among seniors. For those who smoke it’simportant to remember:• Never smoke in bed.• Put your cigarette or cigar out at the first sign
of feeling drowsy while watching televisionor reading.
• Don't leave your lit cigarette or cigar unattended.• Use deep ashtrays and put your cigarettes all the
way out.• Consider switching to fire-save cigarettes
(firesafecigarettes.org) that self-extinguish whenthey’re not being smoked.
Cook Safely: Home cooking fires are the numberone cause of fire injuries among the elderly. Tips thatcan help include:• Never leave food cooking on a stove top
unattended. When leaving the kitchen, take awooden spoon or potholder as a reminder toturn off the oven or burners or consider installingan automatic stove shut-off device as a safetyprecaution. Cookstop.com, homesensers.com,stoveguardintl.com, pioneeringtech.com sell them.
• Avoid wearing loose clothing with hangingsleeves when you cook and keep towels and potholders away from flames or burners.
• Never use the range or oven to heat your home.• Double-check the kitchen before you go to bed
or leave the house.
Heat Safely: Alternative heating devices like spaceheaters, stoves and fireplaces are another potentialfire hazard for seniors. Seniors who use these devicesshould keep these tips in mind:• If you use a space heater, keep anything that can
burn at least three feet away and always turn itoff when you leave the house or go to sleep. Also,if you’re buying a new space heater, look for onewith a safety feature that automatically shuts offthe power if the heater falls over.
• If you use a fireplace that burns wood, be sureyou have a glass or metal screen front to catchthe flying sparks and rolling logs and have thechimney flue inspected annually and cleanedif needed.
• If you use a heating device fueled by gas, oil, wood or kerosene, purchase and install carbonmonoxide detectors to alert you to potentialtoxic gas problems.
Home TipsAround 75% of seniors who die in fires each yeardon’t have working smoke alarms in their homes.
SAVVY LIVINGFire Safety Tips for Seniors

Seniors or caregivers should make it a priority toinstall smoke alarms on every level of their houseoutside heir sleeping area and change the batteries atleast once a year. It’s also important to have an escapeplan in the event of a fire.
For seniors who are hearing impaired, companieslike Silent Call (silentcall.com) and HarrisCommunications (harriscomm.com) sell smoke andcarbon monoxide detectors that work with flashingstrobe lights and bed vibrators to alert you when aproblem arises. And, there are also home smokeand fire monitoring services like ADT(adtfireprotection.com) that can alert seniors, caregivers and the fire department if a fire happens.
