Weekend in Wyperfeld N.P. 12th
&13th Oct 2013 Trip Report
Seven 4x4 vehicles carrying eighteen occupants met at Red Cliffs for a
weekend trip to the Wyperfeld National Park. The group made their way to Ouyen then onto Patchewollock and into the Park. Our first Stop was
at Pine Plains Lodge where were well received by Susan
and Adrian, the current owners and operators. We
had arrived without warning but the charming couple
proudly showed us through their impressive pine log
Lodge building which was
built as a replica of the original built in the late
eighteen hundreds. What a fabulous place to live or visit, high on a hill with sweeping views of the countryside around in full spring flush.
Check out the website “www.pineplainslodge.com”. After a good look around and a good chat we continued onto the snow drift. This is the
name given to this fantas-tic picnic spot which set
among large shade trees at the foot of a massive
white sand dune. The young at heart as well as
Lisa’s three children
Ashton, Annabel and Hera
and the teenage Steff all enjoyed the occasion. We
then got moving again and crossed the Wirregren Plain on the Millers track to get to O’Sullivan’s
Lookout on the way we saw a large group of adult emus on the move as well bounding kangaroos. We all climbed to the top to admire the 360
degree views.

“Some comments
were heard about
levels of one’s personal fitness”.
Back in the
vehicles again, this time we were
heading around the northern end of the
plain to get onto the Gunners track
to take us south
then east and south again to the Casuarina Camp ground for our lunch break . It had turned out to be a cracker of a day about 23 degrees with
a light breeze. We enjoyed a leisurely lunch and then headed off on our 50 kilometre trip on mostly sandy tracks on our way to Wonga Camp
ground. On the way we stopped and stocked up with a pile of mallee roots for our camp fire. However one of our female travellers got so
emotionally attached to one particular stump that she kept it from the fate of the fire later on. There was quite a lot of human activity going on
in the park with several large groups out checking up on the presence of Mallee Fowl. We made it to Wonga Camp Ground. Anne and I were
amazed at the amount of campers there. We could see about fifty vehi-cles with tents etc scattered all over the park. We found a shady spot
and were set up by about 4.30pm. We settled down with drinks and nib-bles which continued on until after dark while we waited for the over
friendly fly population to disappear before we attempted to cook our din-
ner. After dinner we got a good fire going as the night air was closing in. We chatted on for
while but somehow the happy banter always re-
ferred back to a certain special stump. It was not
late before all of our hap-py campers were in bed.
Saturdays.

Sunday 13th October
Short story: We packed up, we drove through sand and went home!!!!
If you have more time, read the long story!!!
Long story: We packed up before the rain! It was dark and overcast when l got up, and wondered if l should wake others as it looked as
though we were going to cop it, but fortunately we didn’t get any rain before we left.
We packed up after “brekkie” and dropped off money and forms on
the way out. We travelled along the main entrance road noticing
the native flowers on the way. We went down Gosling Lane and
were delayed by a sheep farmer
moving sheep along the lane. He had a couple of alpacas with the
sheep. Further down the road we passed
through some wheat paddocks heading towards the Weeping
Gum, (still don’t know who up-set it) at the north end of Lake
Albacutya where we stopped and let our tyres down a bit
more. Had a look around and some took pics, (How many
4wders does it take to take a pic of a flower/weed??) and
left a camper trailer there. We then went along Purra track,
where it was a bit sandy, but very scenic views, on the way to west-
ern beach camp site. Funny, be-cause we were told we were go-
ing to go along the eastern side the night before!!!!!!

We had smoko there
before heading back to the still, Weeping
Gum to find the camper trailer still
there. Went down the road
and aired up, before heading to Hopetoun.
When we reached Hopetoun, some went
back to Mildura, as Bathurst called.
Some fuelled up before meet-
ing the rest at the eastern side
of (man made), Lake Las-celles, for lunch.
There was a change of plans before we headed off, and we
went around Lake Coorong (according to the map) led by
Glen, who knew where he was going. Glen, assisted by Mark,
informed us about the lake’s last flood and the area in gen-
eral. They are both familiar with the area. After doing a loop, we ended back in Hopetoun where we ended the trip
officially.
I believe a great weekend
was had by all, and thanks for the company
and banter, as there was a lot of that!!!!! Until next
time.

Come and Try Day Sunday 22nd September 2013.
The meeting place for the day was the Centro Car park, where the majority of the trip participants met to travel out to our location at
Koorlong. Beno, Lisa & Joe and Ted met at the location earlier to set up the course which Beno and myself had scoped out the previous evening.
This was a change of venue from our plans due to wet weather.
Once we arrived at the site, there was a quick briefing to all participants
on the day’s activities then Joe led them around the course with club members on hand to guide the visitors through some of the more diffi-
cult sections.
This was all done while Beno ‘dashed’ back into town as
he had brought the toilet tent, but neglected to pack
the toilet…
Soon enough, everyone had become confident at the
course and we reversed the
direction adding a new ele-ment to some of the obsta-
cles. By this time Beno had returned and we all moved
over to an open flat area where a slalom course had
been set up.
Participants took turns in driving through this forwards
and then in reverse, with some taking on the chal-
lenge of driving it blindfolded with mixed
results.

By this time the rain had started
to come down and we moved back to the BBQ where Anne, Lisa and
Ted had cooked up a storm.
Members and visitors took this opportunity to get to know each
other, and Linda entertained the kids with balls and by running
around the course.
After lunch many people decided to head home, while those
remaining headed over to 2 slightly steeper hills (one of which
Beno had become stuck on the
previous evening while scoping out the site). Everyone made it
up the easier climb, with only a few attempting the climb the Beno
had flattened out. After this we headed back to the steepest and
loosest climb where Beno, Aaron and Shane took time to play, trying dif-ferent lines to get over.
Once this was done we all
pitched in to pack up the BBQ and course material and
headed for home. Although it was our ‘plan B’ it was still a
good day, and well supported
by members and visitors. A big thank you to all who
helped organise and run the day, especially those who
took the time to set up at the Farmers Market to promote
the club.
