LATE BASE BALL GOSSIP.

The Washington-Baltimore Peal Drags. The Brotherhood and the League.President Hewett went over to Baltimore

yesterday and had a conference with \ on derHorst and Barnie of the Orioles and PresidentByrne of Brooklyn in regard to matters con¬

cerning a possible transfer of Baltimore to theleague. It is understood that Von der Horst ismaking ft strong effort to induce PresidentHewett to trade franchises with him, and iswilling to offer a large bonus of money. If hesucceeds in getting his price high enough andin securing the consent of the other leagueclubs, witnout which nothing can be done, theresult will simply be that Baltimore will takeWashington's place in the league and Washing¬ton Baltimore's place in the association. Mr.Hewett. however, is holding out strongly for aprice that aluiost precludes a trade. It is be¬lieved also that he demands a player or twofrom Baltimore as part of the exchange. Agentleman bearing relations of a very closenature with Mr. Hewett says that the latter de¬clares he can have the signature of two of liisbest pitchers to National league contracts anyday, their brotherhood agreements to the con¬trary notwithstanding.

liA.SEXAN DECKLE* WANTS TO COVE BACK.President Nimick of Pittsburg has wired

President Young of the league to send a con¬tract to First Baseman Beckley, who but a fewdays ago affixed liis name to a brotherhooddocument and is now willing, it is understood,to be t ike u back into the fold.Word also comes from Pittsburg that Miller.

he with the fog-horn voice.has signed a leaguecontract.PLATERS SIONED.

Gen. Hi-hi Dixwell of Boston has telegraphedAI Johnson, the Cleveland brotherhood mag¬nate, from San Francisco that Oanzel, Clark-son aud Smith are with the National leagueclub. Bart Cunningham, last year of Balti¬more. and Hlisted ot Toronto have signed withthe Philadelphia brotherhood club. SaulCook, last year a catcher of Louisville, hassigned with Brooklyn brotherhood.TUE EIUHr BETWEEN LEAGUE AND BHOTHKRHOOP.Just at present thore is no advantage appar¬

ent on the side of either the league or brother¬hood in the fight for supremacy. Popularsympathy is generally with the league, but thetriends of the players' organization claim thatthis sort of stuff is not going very far in theway of supporting base ball clubs and that ifthe season ever starts the crowds will soondrift to the better ball players. As matters nowstand, if the two organizations were to enterthe field today the brotherhood would un¬doubtedly. on tiiis basis, have the upper hand. But, on the other hand, the friends of theleague are very confident that the brotherhoodwill lose strength from now on and that by thetime the season opens not only the sympathybut aL-o the ability will be ail on the side ofthe old organization.

WHEN THE PINCH COMES."Just wait," said a league enthusiast to a

Stat, reporter the other day. ''Just wait untiltlie snow comes and the wind gets cold and ex¬

penses begin to climb up and the summer sav¬ings begin to melt awav: Then you will hearof brotherhood men. one after another, knock¬ing on the doors of their old managers of theleague, begging for a chance to sign. Theyhave got to live; they have small margins forthe support of their families; thev can get noadvance money from the brotherhood andthey find themselves forced to count, as theyalways have done, on getting salary for amonth or two in advance on which to survivethrough the period of inactivity. They havealways been used to doing that and they arenot in a position to overcome the habit. Theleague will undoubtedly be prepared to offer a

large bonus on each contract in the shape ofadvances, and 1 have no doubt that some clubswill give premiums or bounties with their con¬tracts. 1 venture to predict that the leaguecan have its pick of the old men.barring halfa dozen of the ringleaders.before the seasonopens."Buck E ving was married last night in Savan¬
