Spremna besedaV Društvu revmatikov Slovenije smo ob svetovnem dnevu revmatikov, 12. oktobru 2016, pripravili fotografsko razstavo Imam revmo, a … revma nima mene!

ForewordOn October 12, 2016 – the World Rheumatism and Arthritis Day – The Slovene Rheumatic Association organized a photographic exhibition entitled I have rheumatism… but rheumatism doesn’t have me! We wanted to show the challenges the disease brings but mostly stress the fact that despite all the symptoms and limitations patients can lead fulfilling lives. We always try to spread optimism among patients since it is a very important factor in their day to day lives. The photographer, Tonči Hozjan, uses wide-angle technique and black and white photography to show the symptoms of the disease and the obstacles they pose, while the portraits and color photography depicts optimism, happiness and »joie de vivre« of these patients.

do 60 tisoč bolnikov z vnetnim revmatizmom.

Cilji zdravljenja so lajšanje bolečin, umirjanje vnetja, izboljšanje gibljivosti, upočasnitev napredovanja bolezni v invalidnost in izboljšanje kakovosti življenja.

druge aktivnosti in aktivno sodelovanje posameznika. Ohranjena gibljivost, krepke mišice in pravilna telesna drža zmanjšujejo bolečine, izboljšajo splošno počutje in preprečujejo nepravilne obremenitve.

Inflammatory Rheumatic DiseasesAccording to the Slovene Rheumatic Association (SRA) there are 40 –

60 thousand patients with inflammatory rheumatism in Slovenia. Around 230.000 patients have rheumatism in the more general sense, that is 11% of the population, while 3% have more severe forms of the disease. These are one of the most common diseases due to which people seek medical help.

Autoimmune inflammatory rheumatic diseases can be classified into six large groups: spondyloarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, which are the most frequent rheumatic diseases in adults, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, which afflicts children, crystal induced joint inflammation (e.g. gout), system binder tissue diseases (e.g. system lupus eritematosus) and vasculitis (vascular wall inflammation). The common symptoms in most of the rheumatic diseases are joint inflammation and consequently pain.

The actual cause of inflammatory rheumatic diseases is not entirely known. It is often connected with the genetic makeup, which together with an unknown external factor causes the onset of the disease. It can be a virus infection, stress, injury or medicine, but the operational mechanism has not been well explained yet. Due to a disturbed immune system in inflammatory rheumatism the body no longer distinguishes its own tissue and attacks it. This causes chronic inflammation, which leads to pain, hard joints which get stiffer and stiffer. Apart from limbs the whole body can also be affected (internal organs, skin, organs and senses).

Inflammatory rheumatic diseases can affect anyone, regardless of sex and age. Some forms are more common in women, others in men. The disease can appear in any period. It can appear in children and teenagers, some forms only appear with the elderly. Inflammatory rheumatic diseases most commonly appear between the ages 30 and 50. Despite all the progress in treatment of rheumatic diseases there are still many disabled who are unable to live independently without the help of others. Disability can occur very soon or never with rheumatic patients, depending on the gravity of the disease and the speed of its progression.

As a consequence of the disease and disability, patients with inflammatory rheumatism can face different problems and limitations in all areas of life – in their family and work environment, during the educational process, with leisure activities and social inclusion in general.

Treatment and disease controlDifferent inflammatory rheumatic diseases are treated in different

ways, while an integrated, multi-disciplinary approach to treatment is very important. Apart from physiotherapy the rheumatic patients can also make use of the work therapy. The aim of the treatment is to ease the pain, soothe the inflammation, improve mobility, slow down the disease progression to disability and improve the quality of life.

Active participation of the patient is necessaryRheumatic diseases are not treated merely with medicine, other activities

and active participation of the patient are of utmost importance. Each individual must do as much as possible to control the disease. Physical exercise is greatly emphasized in order to improve and maintain normal posture and mobility of the spine and joints. Greater mobility, firm muscles and correct posture reduce the pain, improve general wellbeing and prevent irregular strain.

Assumptions about rheumatic diseasesRheumatism is a disease of the elderly. Not true. Rheumatic diseases can afflict people of all ages, including babies, children and teenagers.

One can get rheumatism from sitting on cold floors, walking in the rain or long exposure to cold and draft. Rheumatic diseases are a consequence of different, mainly inflammatory and other processes in our bodies. They are not caused by sitting on cold floors, exposure to cold water, cold and draft.

Apart from the pain, rheumatism does not have many consequences for the patient.Rheumatic diseases are serious, chronic diseases with a lot of negative influence in all areas of life. If not diagnosed early enough or if the patient is not treated adequately and in time, they can cause irreversible damage to the spine and other joints, which can also lead to disability.
