Piezo ‘Smart’ and Micro

Piezo ‘S’

Ultrasound is a word that is familiar to virtually alldental staff, and ultrasonics have now been employed inmany smaller items of dental equipment for more than40 years.

Ultrasound is perhaps best utilised in ultrasonicscaling procedures, and whilst early units did not alwaysoffer complete control and patient comfort, they did

take much of the pain and stress out of conventionalmanual scaling.

Some of the latest advances in ultrasonic technologycan now be seen in two units manufactured by Mectron– the Piezo ‘Smart’ and its smaller sister unit, the Piezo‘S’. Both these units are now available from OptidentLtd.

Piezo Smart – functions and controls  At first glance it is obvious that the Piezo Smart iscompact and very functional with an easy-to-see displayand simple-to-use controls.

It has been ergonomically designed, and underneaththe very clinical but easy-to-clean exterior, the internalworkings incorporate the latest digital chip technology. These advanced electronics can recognise and respondto virtually any external influences and can then offset

them automatically, thus delivering a much moreeffective overall performance.  A clever built-in feedback system continually

monitors performance and then adjusts this whenneeded within 0.1 seconds, and the APC (AutomaticProtection Control) ensures safe function. It canrecognise any deviation from normal functions such aswear or perhaps the incorrect fitting of an insert, andwill then automatically stop the ultrasound and the flowof liquid.

There are only four push buttons, but operators havenine different power levels to choose from:• Settings 1-2 can be used for endodontic work, as theyincrease slowly and will guard against file fractures• Power levels 3-5 will deliver a medium intensity suitedto the gentle removal of hard subgingival deposits andbiofilm

• Use of power settings 6-9 is intended for rapid andthorough removal of more stubborn tartar.

The Piezo Smart has an operational frequency rangeof 24,000-36,000 Hz, with power consumption of 40watts, and weighs only 920 grams.

Another useful operational feature is the stand-byfunction. The operator simply starts by pushing thefunction button, but after five minutes of inactivity theunit will switch to stand-by. However, the Piezo Smartwill resume on its original power setting by simplypushing any of the four push buttons.

The handpiece is slim and lightweight, being madefrom titanium and Radel (a high-tech plastic material). Itis said to be resistant to attack by any harmful solutions, and is sterilisable at 134 degrees C.

It will accommodate any of the 41 different Mectronultrasound inserts, and its unique coupling design will

prevent any incidence of incorrect connection.

The bottle systemThe Piezo Smart features a new safe and reliable bottlesystem that can accommodate the liquid of the operator’schoice, whether this be water, saline, or medicinalsolution.

The plastic bottle has a liquid capacity of 300ml andis located into a plastic holder, secured by twisting intoplace, and is linked to the unit by a leak-free connector.

Delivery is variable with a choice of nine steps by useof the + and – keys. A visual display allows the user toclearly see all settings at a glance.

All connections, including those for the liquid circuit, internal peristaltic pump and power supply are safelyhoused within the unit so are protected from any damageor attack by any harmful cleaning or disinfection agents.

Piezo SIt will be seen that the Piezo Smart offers the practitionera practical and versatile unit with much operationalscope, together with safety and optimum performance, but for those professionals who may only require a morebasic and less expensive unit, Mectron has produced thePiezo S.

This unit is smaller but still has much to offer, andmay well suit the needs of the hygienist.

Weighing only 700 grams, it has a less sophisticatedvisual display, and no independent liquid bottle supply. However, it still uses the APC system, and its handpiecewill accept the full range of 41 ultrasound inserts.
