Trinity Triumph May-June 2015
Acknowledgments, Gratitude, Time, Talents, and
Blessings
Kris Hawk’s schedule did not allow her to prepare and
publish this issue of the Triumph. We are grateful for
the time and talent she gives to this publication, while
devoting her life to family and career. We look forward
to her professional quality newsletters again in the
future. Thank you, Kris, for all your efforts in making
this an outstanding publication.
Trinity Church is blessed to have so many people who
share their time and talents. Some write columns or
submit other information for the newsletter, some
proofread and edit, and some duplicate and/or assemble
printed copies.
We are grateful for the many members who take time to
perform office work, keep the church and grounds clean,
take care of repairs, or make sure needed supplies are
available, while others help to prepare food for special
occasions, supply snacks for after church, or provide
flowers for Sunday worship services.
Our Sunday mornings are enriched by the many
members of our church family who share their musical
talents through singing or playing instruments, as well
as by those who volunteer as ushers, liturgists, acolytes,
and greeters.
Dedicated Sunday School teachers and Bible Study
leaders teach and facilitate discussions, and committee
members, Deacons, and Elders continue to help Trinity
meet the needs of our members, as well our local and
global neighbors.
We are grateful for all the members of our church
family; each person is a blessing to Trinity.

Mother's Day & Beyond
Dr. Jim Schumacher
I'm probably the only man I know ever to have been asked to start a women's organization. As I recall, it was 1968. Since, at that time, I served on presbytery's council, our executive had a job for me. "Jim," he said, "I want you to contact all of our churches, set up a women's meeting, and see that everyone's invited." It was an earlier and simpler time. Saying no really wasn't an option. A neighboring pastor offered his building to hold the meeting, and I began crafting my invitation letter. Everything worked out the way we hoped. The ladies actually showed up. What came out of all of that was the United Presbyterian Women's Organization of Logansport Presbytery in Indiana. I do recall, however, one somewhat feisty pastor responding to what I thought was a friendly, up-beat invitation letter. Let me summarize his rather caustic comment: "For years, and years, and years, and years, I've been waiting for something -- anything -- from presbytery that made sense. I even imagined what such a memo might say. But, Brother Schumacher, you've just surpassed my wildest expectations! At this point, I officially give up expecting ANYTHING out of presbytery that even begins making sense!" I did not take that as a vote of confidence. Looking back, however, I recognize that assigning a male pastor to help start a women's organization wasn't our most inspired idea. My brief, and admittedly confusing experience -- illustrates the unique and changing roles women have occupied during my own lifetime. Unlike Sally (who's younger) I actually remember World War Two. Rosie, the Riveter, is now a historical footnote. Rosie's face showed up on posters in coveralls, her hair done up in a bandana. Armed with her lunch pail, Rosie was taking on the Axis by working overtime at the defense factory. Rosie helped make everything from tank treads to B-17s. Her sisters, working for the Air Transfer Command, ferried fighters and bombers across the Atlantic to Great Britain. For that matter, let's not for a moment forget those young ladies serving as WACs, WAVEs, as military nurses and administrators. I learned a few months ago that Coty Sidwell served as a WAC in post-war Japan. She was not alone! In all of that, almost without our noticing what was happening, the role of women underwent a tremendous change. Gone, in the twinkling of an eye, was the idea that "a woman's place was in the home." No more! She and her sisters had a high calling. All of us -- as in World War One -- were "making the world safe for democracy" The real (and unspoken) question was what would happen "when Johnny came marching home"? Would Rosie meekly surrender her job and confine herself to raising children? Many did. More did not. The U.S. was moving from a rural-based economy to manufacturing. By now, women had become integral to the manufacturing process.
The post-war period was marked by an expansive economy. Dad was home from the war! We hadn't had a new car in years! Those vehicles came rolling off assembly lines -- again -- with considerable feminine assistance. All, however, was not altogether well on our home front. As has so often been the case following military conflict, adjustments weren't always easy. The divorce rate soared, along with the number of single-families headed by women. Things, clearly, were changing. Trouble was, a lot of us still thought in pre-war terms and acted as though every way in every day, things were getting better and better. Sometimes that was the case. Frequently, however, change brought challenge. Feminist writers such as Betty Friedan and Gloria Steinem pointed out ways in which women found themselves exploited in society. Steinem, a lady of no small intellectual ability, actually went undercover as, of all things, a Playboy bunny in the early sixties. Even our language, the way we thought, had become male dominated. What a shock! Language is like the water in the goldfish bowl. You notice the fish, but rarely the water! As Presbyterians, we found ourselves right in the middle of that struggle. No sooner was our Book of Confessions, and the then brand-new "Confession of 1967" finished, highlighting among other things, the Neo-Orthodox theology of Karl Barth, than we noticed its repeated use of "man" and "men" to mean all people -- both men and women. Whereas once we were blind, we began to see! Incidentally, that discovery draws attention to the way confessional language in the church is always, in one way or another, time conditioned. Today, especially in the church, women continue to play an increasingly important role. There were lots of Presbyterian churches that postponed ordaining women as elders and deacons until what now seem -- at least to me -- fairly recent times. Thankfully, those times have passed. In our tradition, women now come much closer to full equality. Ladies serve in all the offices of our church -- including the pastorate. Marge Carpenter, as I recall, served as the first feminine moderator of our General Assembly -- our church's highest office. Yet, in the rest of the world -- particularly in the Middle East -- there continues to be serious discussion as to whether women might even be allowed to drive cars. For me, however, it is a matter of pride to recognize the crucial role women have always played in the faith community. Mother's Day is, on the one hand, a way to show a real debt of gratitude all of us owe to mothers, grandmothers and, if we're really lucky, great-grandmothers. As we recall the unique struggles that marked their lives, it's vital that all of us -- male and female alike -- continue working toward a world where all of us -- across a great many different divides -- learn how important it is that we work together to build a better world for all of us. Happy Mother's Day!

Graduation Sunday
Our 2015 graduates will be honored during the Youth
Sunday service on May 3. We hope you will attend and
show support for our young people. Following the
service we will have a potluck and reception to spotlight
them. Their current information is included in the
newsletter. We, their church family, will continue to
pray for them as they make their way in the world.
Graduation Potluck – Sunday, May 3
After the Youth service we will have a church potluck in
the Fellowship Hall. Please plan to bring a dish and
enjoy some great time of fellowship as we send off our
graduates! The Christian Education Committee is
furnishing ham, beverages and table service. The
graduation cake is being provided by Charlene Noland.
Thank you! We also thank Marilyn Royer for heading up
the kitchen for us yet again.
Safety Meeting
We held our first review of the safety policy on Sunday,
April 12. Another meeting is planned for Sunday, June 7
in the parlor following the worship service. If you will
be working with our youth for Vacation Bible School
(June 15-19), you should attend if you have not yet
signed off on the policy. If you missed the first meeting,
try to make this one. A copy of the policy is hanging on
the bulletin board across from the office. If you have
questions, see Kris Beebe.
Choral Music Sunday—Sunday, May 17
Choral Music Sunday, featuring the adult, youth, and
children’s choirs, will be held Sunday, May 17. Come
worship on this Music Sunday and be blessed by the
gifts of our vocal choirs as they praise God through
songs.
Continuation of the Romans series: Look for bulletin
announcements concerning "special" discussion,
debate, and learning opportunities presented from to
time. The continuation of the Romans series is
coming up.
A Special Offering: A special offering is being taken to
assist Chad Foster and his family during this time he is
being treated for leukemia and is unable to work. On
your check payable to Trinity, memo Chad Foster, or
with cash write Chad Foster as the special offering. It
is helpful to include your name and envelope number
on any envelope in the offering plate for recording on
your annual giving statement.
New Park/Path: As spring begins, watch for
construction to begin on the adjacent property
owned by the Muskingum Valley Park District for a
new pathway/park that will connect our church and
the Zanesville Museum of Art.
Upper Room Devotionals: A number of people have
asked about the Upper Room Daily Devotions
booklets. They will again be available beginning with
March/April issue in both regular size and large print.
They will be in the narthex once they arrive. If you
would care to donate to help defray the cost you
may, but it is not required.
Per Capita Cost: Our Presbyterian government bodies
fund themselves through a program called Per Capita.
This funding helps with administration, resources and
ministry projects. The Per Capita cost for 2015 is
$28.69 per active member. Please help our church
contribute to the per capita, since the balance has to
be paid from our general fund.
Snacks after Service: Having the fellowship time with
Snacks after Service has been a great way for
members to get to know each other after church
each Sunday. You may sponsor it alone or with
another member or group. The church will provide
coffee, cold and hot water, plates, napkins and
silverware and punch bowl (if needed). If you would
like to sponsor Snacks after Service, please sign up on
the chart across from the elevator.
Pancake Breakfast Benefit—Sunday, May 31: The
adult choir is sponsoring a pancake breakfast to
benefit the Chad Foster Family on Sunday, May 31
from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. Join us before church to
enjoy breakfast and fellowship. Free will donations
will be accepted. (There is no promise that you will be
served by singing wait staff, even though the choir is
coordinating and sponsoring this event.)

Travel Tales—The first Travel Tales evening took us on a tour of Australia and New Zealand on April 10th. We are hoping to enjoy more evenings of travelogues and a time of socializing. Let Maggie know if you are willing to share pictures and details of a recent trip, and we will determine an available Friday evening to meet.
Seder—Fourteen people participated in the symbolic Passover Seder meal on April 19th. This was a time of fellowship, learning, and sharing in celebrations which reflected Biblical times. Thank you to all who attended and participated, and special thanks to Marilyn Royer, Marsha Mortimer, George Mangels, Helen Dixon, Hinda Ardrey, and Frank Walburg for helping in many ways: baking, preparation, sharing Seder utensils, cleaning up and/or reading during the Order of the Seder. Your time and effort were very much appreciated.
Special Offerings—Our February collection for the First Overnight Shelter at First UMC on Putnam Avenue totaled $145.00. The One Great Hour of Sharing offering received during March and April totaled $558.51. Thank you for your generous support for our local, national, and global neighbors.
LifeBridge Information Evening—The Mission and Chuch Life Committee would like to invite congregation members to attend a presentation by Theresa Snider and Kathe King about LifeBridge, a partnership of local churches and other agencies and groups, which is working to help and empower residents in need with a variety of programs. Come join us on Tuesday, May 12th at 7:00 p.m. in the Narthex and hear about all that they offer and how groups and individuals might help others in our community through LifeBridge. Check out their website at www.lifebridgeohio.org to learn more about them.

Dear Friends at Trinity Presbyterian Church:
Thank you very much for your cards and prayers
after my abrupt retirement as your organist! I was
depending on friends and neighbors to bring me to
Zanesville, and then it took me some time to move
from one space to another and catch my breath-
plus the need to bring extra tanks of oxygen. I was
also developing arthritis in my left hand, which
made it difficult to play accurately at the keyboard.
All in all, I decided it was time to retire. Sorry to
have been so abrupt! Best of luck in the future.
Sincerely, Clem Burton”
