For this night, Calgary “exports” one of its best
jazz assets to Edmonton, saxophonist Gerry
Hebért. Gerry is well known on the Alberta jazz
scene, and across Canada, as a great musician
and dedicated educator.
Since 1997, the Gerry Hébert Quartet has laid
claim to a diverse musical territory, exploring
free improvised spaces as well as putting their
own spin on classic jazz standards and pop
hits. In concert, the Quartet showcase Hébert’s
original compositions alongside select covers
by the Beatles, Peter Gabriel and Oscar Peterson;
they are passionate, high-energy and engaging
musicians, who consistently provide compelling
jazz experiences.
This night will include some selections from
Gerry’s second CD with the Quartet, entitled
The Beat Niq Sessions Volume 2: Constructive
Interference.
Gerry is a founding member of The Swinging
Bovines, co-founding the Calgary-based
saxophone quartet who went on to release
three CDs and performed over 500 concerts on
tours across Canada, the U.S. and Europe. A busy
performing and studio musician, Gerry has also
contributed his voice to 18 other recording
projects.

Flora Ware
Canadian Vocalists
Described as both a “little-known vocal
treasure” and “one of the rising jazz talents”
in BC, vocalist Flora Ware is ready to step into
a bigger spotlight. On this night, Flora will be
playing original songs from her latest CD Insight
(2008), as well as jazz and soul standards with a
modern twist.
On the strength of her Insight release, Flora
appeared in 2008 at two popular festivals in BC
- the Kaslo Jazz Fest and Rare Earth Jazz & Blues
Fest in Vernon. She also did a Western Canadian
tour with songstress Monica Lee. The BC Interior
Music Awards nominated her for Best Jazz Artist
of the Year in 2008.
Co-produced by Rick Kilburn and Peter Berring,
Insight appeals to a wide audience with its
groovy mix of standards and original music
influenced by Latin jazz, and Soul/R&B.
Flora is developing a reputation as a performer
who puts her soul into singing and who does
not fit neatly into any one genre; she is part jazz
diva, part folk singer, part cabaret performer.
Whether it’s swing standards, R&B, or opera, she
isn’t afraid to push the boundaries, delivering a
comedic or seductive twist to a song.
In 2009, Paul Grant featured Flora on his CBC
radio show “Hot Air”. She completed a spring
tour of the Kootenays in March 2009, after
being awarded a touring grant from the
Columbia Basin Trust. She also performed
regularly in 2009 throughout
the BC interior. Her 2010
tour will include stops in
Alberta, the BC coast,
and Vancouver Island.
Flora first appeared at
the Yardbird Suite in 2006
with the Charlie Austin Trio.

With a musical career spanning more than four
decades, Lew Tabackin shows no signs of stopping.
He continues to tour the world as a soloist, playing
clubs and jazz festivals with his own groups and
as featured soloist with the Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz
Orchestra.
Lew is an artist of astonishing vision. His electrifying
flute playing is at once virtuosic, primordial, cross-
cultural, and passionate. His distinctive tenor sax
style includes the use of wide intervals, abrupt
changes of mood and tempo, and purposeful
fervor, all in the service of showing the full range
of possibilities of his instrument - melodically,
rhythmically, and dynamically.
In the 1960s, among other musical highlights, Lew
played with Tal Farlow and Don Friedman, and
in big bands led by Cab Calloway, Les and Larry
Elgart, Maynard Ferguson, Joe Henderson, Chuck
Israels, Thad Jones and Mel Lewis, Clark Terry, and
Duke Pearson. In 1968, he met Toshiko Akiyoshi
when the two played together in a quartet. They
eventually married and moved to Los Angeles,
where they formed the award-winning big band
known as the Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra.
During the 1980s he began to get some long
overdue recognition as a flutist, winning many
Down Beat critic’s and reader’s polls.
In 1990, Mr. Tabackin released his first disc of
several discs for Concord, “Desert Lady,” featuring
Hank Jones, Dave Holland, and Victor Lewis,
followed by the acclaimed “I’ll Be Seeing You” with
Benny Green, Peter Washington, and Lewis Nash,
and finally, “Tenority” in 1996. Since then, he has
released several albums on a variety of labels.
A long time favourite of Edmonton jazz audiences,
this event will celebrate Lew’s 70th birthday
featuring his outstanding New York trio.

Expect a great night of blues and jazz harmonica
from Canada’s “harp master,” Carlos del Junco.
Carlo has been named the Maple Blues Award’s
Harmonica Player of the Year seven times.
With seven recordings also on his resume and
a reputation for excellent live performances,
Carlos is always a big hit with harp fans, blues
fans and jazz fans.
With his 2008 release, Steady Movin’ (Northern
Blues), Carlos solidified his reputation in the
world of music. Here’s what John Valentyn of
the Toronto Blues Society had to say about
Steady Movin’ :
“The eagerly anticipated successor to ‘Blues
Mongrel’ is here and is worth the wait. It is
primarily acoustic and perhaps even more of a
demonstration of his prowess on the humble
harmonica... as before there are harp positions
and keys listed for every song, but never does
technical prowess get in the way of enjoyment of
the music.”
Carlos is certainly not your straight ahead blues
harmonica player. His influences range far and
wide and he can quickly move from a straight
ahead blues groove into more adventurous
territory which may include jazz, Latin, New
Orleans second line grooves, or ska. He will
occasionally take a blues standard and flip it
upside down to breathe new life into it.
Playing a ten-hole diatonic harmonica, Carlos
has developed the unique ability to play
chromatically by using an “overblow” technique
taught to him by jazz virtuoso Howard Levy.
Among his recording credits are Blues Mongrel
(2005, Big Reed Records), Up and At ‘Em (2001,
Big Reed Records) and Big Road Blues, a
collaborative effort with Thom “Champagne
Charlie” Roberts that won Carlos the 1996 Jazz
Report Blues Musician Of The Year Award. Just
Your Fool, a sizzling live session with Kevin
Breit, was recorded in 1995. In 1993, Carlos del
Junco won two gold medals at the Hohner
World Harmonica Championship in Trossingen,
Germany; judged the world’s best in both the
diatonic blues and the diatonic jazz categories.

Jazz fans will appreciate this special night which
welcomes Alberta native and guitar virtuoso
Brian Hughes back to the Yardbird Suite!
Brian has forged an international reputation
as a jazz guitarist and world-class performer,
including tours and recordings with Loreena
McKennitt, and an extensive career as a jazz
front man.
Here’s an excerpt from his website which
outlines his talents as a contemporary jazz
guitarist, multi-instrumentalist and producer:
His first two albums, “Between Dusk” and
“Dreaming and Under One Sky,” firmly established
him as one of the foremost guitarists and
composers in the genre, perfectly blending his
fluid and emotive guitar style into an exciting,
melodic mix of Latin, Jazz and World Music
compositions. After being picked as a winner in
JAZZIZ Magazine’s “Guitars On Fire” competition
his subsequent recordings “Straight To You,” “One
2 One,” “Shakin’ not Stirred” and “Along the Way”
have received critical acclaim and major radio
air play from coast to coast. With his sizzling fret
work and infectious compositions the media are
accurate in saying: “Both a great artist and an
accessible one. His passion is so obvious, intense
and contagious, that his audience shares it.” Brian
has received the SOCAN/BMI “Jazz & Instrumental
Composer of the Year” Award six times from 1997
to 2006 and the title track from “Shakin’ Not
Stirred” was featured on an episode of HBO’s “Sex
and the City”.
Also well known for his 20 year parallel career
performing and recording with world renowned
vocalist Loreena McKennitt, Brian’s skills as
a musician (guitars, oud, bouzouki) and his
production talents are evident on her platinum
recording “An Ancient Muse,” the concert DVD
“Nights From The Alhambra,” filmed in Granada,
Spain and her past seven multi-platinum
recordings. and received a Juno (Canadian
Grammy) nomination as “Producer of the Year”
for his work on the platinum selling Loreena
McKennitt album “The Visit.”
Brian has also produced several international
Platinum-selling albums for Greek recording
artists Evanthia Reboutsika, Yannis Kotsiras
and Panayotis Kalantzopoulos, including
the soundtrack for “A Touch of Spice” the top
grossing film in Greek cinema history. He has also
accompanied Celtic music legends, The Chieftains,
on several tours.

Here’s to another night of great jazz vocals
down at the Yardbird, with Vancouver’s Melody
Diachun in the company of a groove-oriented
jazz quartet.
Melody Diachun is an emerging jazz star
and an in-demand vocalist celebrated for
her expressive voice, warm performance and
“original material that catches the ear” (The
Vancouver Sun). She is a Juno nominee and was
nominated for Female Vocalist of the Year at the
2009 National Jazz Awards.
Melody’s latest CD EQ was recorded in 2008
on Cellar Live. The album transcends musical
genres to deliver a vibrant, highly original
milestone. Her first two independent releases,
Lullaby of the Leaves and Dreams and Places
presented her as a gifted songwriter and a
versatile, understated singer.
With several albums to his credit, Chris Andrew’s
musical diversity can be seen through his
numerous performances over the years in
genres such as jazz, funk, pop, Latin, and musical
theatre. Based in Edmonton, Chris has studied
in Cuba and toured across Canada countless
times in various musical styles. His resume lists
a veritable who’s who of jazz: He has performed
with Joshua Redman, Sonny Fortune, Bud
Shank, Pete Christlieb, Joe LaBarbera, P.J. Perry
and Paquito D’Rivera, to name just a few. In
2008 Chris was honoured with the CBC Galaxie
Rising Star Award for his virtuosic talent.
For the past twenty-five years Doug Stephenson
has been an integral member of Western
Canada’s jazz community, multi-tasking as
bassist, guitarist, educator, studio musician,
composer, arranger and producer. Now based
in Vancouver, Doug works with a wide range of
world class artists, and has played with Tommy
Banks, Charlie Rouse, Fraser MacPherson, Jay
Thomas, John Stowell, P.J. Perry, Campbell Ryga,
Bob Murphy, Altered Laws and blues legend Big
Miller, to name a few.
Best known for his work with Canadian hip
hop artist K-OS, drummer Ray Garraway is an
intensely creative player with a great, natural
“feel.” He is also a sought after clinician and
instructor. With many albums to his credit,
Ray has won drumming competitions, toured
the world, and appeared on various TV shows,
including Late Night with David Letterman.

On this night, you better “jump to it” and get
yourself down to the Yardbird Suite for a lively
night of vintage jazz, jump blues and Afro Cuban
rhythms, with Dave Babcock and his Jump
Orchestra.
This night will feature Dave on saxophone and
vocals leading an 8-piece version of his Jump
Orchestra along with special guest, guitar maestro
Amos Garrett. Dave will be performing music from
his latest studio recording entitled Jump To It. This
long-awaited CD and release party will be “music
to the ears” of many people who have been fans
of Dave and his Jump Orchestra over the years.
For those who don’t know, Dave led the first
incarnation of his Jump Orchestra from 1990
to 1994. The Jump, as they were often known,
performed throughout Western Canada, with
an unprecedented three and a half year house
gig at Earl’s Tin Palace in Edmonton. They
appeared many times on television and radio,
and were featured on a CBC Variety recording
called Jazz Notes in 1992. Also in that year, they
won an ARIA Award as best jazz group, for the
recording Both Feet.
“Jump To It” was recorded locally at Edmontone
Studio and features some of Alberta’s finest
musicians, many of whom will be playing with
Dave at the CD release. This self-produced
album features several original compositions
that showcase Dave’s smooth vocals and soulful
saxophone in a variety of settings, from trio
to 11-piece. Amos Garrett’s stellar guitar work
appears on three of the tracks. “Famous” Amos
needs little introduction to Edmonton audiences,
being one of Canada’s most highly respected
guitarists, in any musical style.
