Jaclyn Guillou QuintetVancouver based, B.C. born and raised Jaclyn

Guillou (pronounced Ghee-you), is an award

winning jazz vocalist who performs original

music and jazz standards. She has a sound

that is most comparable with crossover artists

and female jazz singer-songwriters such as

Melody Gardot and Madeleine Peyroux. With

her international band: New York vibraphonist

Tom Beckham, Belgian pianist Bram Weijters,

Vancouver bassist Michael Rush and Toronto/

Vancouver drummer Joe Poole she has delighted

audiences everywhere. Her compositional skills

include interesting and unusual arrangements

of standards that are reminiscent of Peggy

Lee, Sarah Vaughan and Nancy King. Her

influences range from the queen of the blues

Dinah Washington, passionate Diane Reeves,

folk singer-songwriter Martin Sexton and

Brazilian legend Elis Regina. This young twenty-

something artist strives to merge the sound

of deep jazz roots and hip modern sounds to

appeal to music lovers of all sorts.

Jaclyn was the recipient of a CBC Galaxie Rising

Star Award at the 2009 Vancouver International

Jazz Festival. The release of her new album, To

The City, will coincide with the current tour.

As a vocalist, composer and bandleader, Guillou

brings a unique style of songwriting to the jazz

idiom. She unites jazz form and structure with

deep sensitive lyrics which visit personal stories

that incorporate texture and complex harmony.

Guillou’s creative vocal flexibility evokes a

strong sense of rhythmic phrasing, colorful

tone and distinct articulation. Her voice is raw

and emotional and it lingers long after the last

note.

Ryan Oliver QuintetToronto-based tenor saxophonist Ryan Oliver

has come into his own on the Canadian music

scene. Oliver maintains a busy performance

schedule in Toronto and beyond. Along with

leading his own groups, he is a member of

several prominent Toronto groups and has been

a featured performer in many jazz festivals. He

has performed as both a leader and sideman

in most of Canada’s premier jazz clubs and has

shared the stage with many top shelf musicians

including Victor Lewis, Vic Juris, Joe Cohn, Phil

Dwyer, Pat LaBarbera, Bob McLaren, Terry Clarke,

and Richard Whiteman.

From 2007 to the summer of 2009, Oliver lived

in New York, completing a Masters degree in

Jazz Performance at Rutgers University and

performing throughout the city.

Ryan is also a member of Juno award winning

blues/rock performer Derek Miller’s group. The

band has traveled throughout North America,

including performances at the New Orleans

jazz Festival, and Toronto’s Dundas Square.

Oliver is featured in the horn section on Derek

Miller’s most recent recording “Derek Miller and

Double Trouble”, featuring Stevie Ray Vaughn’s

heralded rhythm section, Double Trouble and

musical icon Willie Nelson.

Whatever the musical situation, Oliver’s robust

tenor tone and passion for the jazz tradition are

evident every time he takes the stage.

Saturday, April 23rd

6 May/June 2011

Eldar Djangirov came to the United States from

Kyrgyzstan when he was ten years old having

already performed at a jazz festival in Russia.

A jazz prodigy, he released his first major label

recording at the age of 17. Now only 24, he has

released several discs since then, one of which, Re-

Imagination, was nominated for a Grammy award

in 2007 for Best Contemporary Jazz Album.

His 2009 release, Virtue, balances exhilarating

youthful energy with a new found sophistication

and depth of reflection that mirrors his personal

and creative growth. “I’m so proud of this album,

more so than any I’ve done so far,” he insists. “In

many ways, you could think of it as a soundtrack to

my direct experiences since I’ve moved to New York

City.” The music is adventurous and accessible.

2011 will see a new CD on Sony Music

Entertainment called “Three Stories”.

Eldar brings an intriguing variety of bebop, hard

bop, post-bop and swing influences to his work

but is essentially a straight-ahead player. He dazzles

audiences with his impressive technique, speed-

demon array of notes and music that can display

a jagged edge and angular inventions. However,

he also shows his maturity by ramping down the

intensity on occasion to display introspection and

impressionism.

Always known for his prodigious pyrotechnics

and precocious knowledge of the bebop tradition,

along the way, he’s had the good fortune to meet

or work with the masters including Dr. Billy Taylor,

Marian McPartland, Dave Brubeck, Michael Brecker,

Wynton Marsalis, Ron Carter, and Herbie Hancock.

One can hear the influence of many of the piano

greats in his playing, from Art Tatum and Oscar

Peterson through Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett and

Ahmad Jamal, on to McCoy Tyner and then to

the energy of Robert Glasper and other current

pianists. Eldar continues to explore new frontiers

through composing and performing, enabling

him to ultimately to realize his own musical vision.

Usually seen in a trio format, his Yardbird Suite

concert will feature Eldar Djangirov in a solo

setting.

Kent Sangster’s Obsessions Octet’s (a nonet for this

weekend) return to the Yardbird Suite will mark the

debut of a new and exciting project for this award-

winning ensemble. For this special event the ensemble

will be presenting the music of the great Stan Getz, one

of the most historically important figures in jazz. The

legacy of Stan Getz spans almost 50 years of recorded

music, encompassing a vast body of works of a wide

variety of styles within the jazz realm. From the swing

to bebop, cool to bossa nova, ballads to the legendary

crossover recording “Focus,” Stan Getz played it all, very

very well with the very best names in jazz. Stan Getz

is perhaps most widely known for the hit “Girl From

Ipanema” garnering a Grammy Award in 1965, but was

equally impressive in all genres of jazz.

The Obsessions Octet, founded in 2005, was nominated

for a JUNO award in 2007 and won a Western Canadian

award the same year. The sophomore recording,

“Melodia” was nominated for a WMCA award in 2010.

Tunnel SixFollowing a 2010 tour, the collective US-Canadian sextet Tunnel Six will be touring again, this time in support of their internationally-released album Lake Superior (OA2 Records). This seven-concert tour will bring the members of the group together from all corners of North America to perform their unique brand of modern jazz. All of the members, leaders in their own right, have collectively joined together for this project, born out of time spent at

the Banff Centre. At times searching and intense, the music rarely strays from melodic roots and is firmly in the tradition of modern jazz, or as Roger Levesque of the Edmonton Journal calls it, “tuneful contemporary jazz, with a lot of space.” For the last two years, the members of Tunnel Six have become quickly-rising stars in their respective cities, and when joined together the results are nothing less than thrilling.

Listening to one of Katie Malloch’s CBC jazz

shows one night I heard what I think defines jazz

music coming through the speakers. I heard a

soulful, beautiful sound combined with technical,

swinging perfection that is the reason I believe

jazz music is a true art form. I was touched by his

playing and went to sleep that night dreaming of

someday making music with this cat. It was Kevin

Dean I was listening to and a few years later that

wish became reality. Our first tour and concerts

at the Yardbird Suite several years ago more than

fulfilled my expectations and now I’m delighted

to say I’ve been able arrange a second appearance

of the band at the Suite on May 13 and 14, on our

cross Canada tour.

On this occasion there will be more attention paid

to original material as there will be a recording in

Vancouver at the end of the tour. All the guys are

writing for this occasion.

The quintet is comprised of myself on saxophones,

Kevin on trumpet, and Andre White on drums.

Both Kevin and Andre live in Montreal and they

both teach jazz studies at McGill University.

On piano from Toronto is the great Mark Eisenman.

Mark is also teaching at York U. and is a first call jazz

pianist in Toronto.

Holding down the fort on bass is Neil Swainson.

All I can say about Neil is that he is among the

best bassists on the scene, and well respected

throughout the world.

In conclusion, apart from assembling a great band,

I’ll also have the pleasure of sharing the stage with

four close friends. It doesn’t get any better than

that!

Mah/Goodman QuartetThe Mah/Goodman Quartet was founded in January 2009 as a collaboration between Calgary saxophonist Brent Mah and Toronto guitarist Alex Goodman and has been turning heads across the country since then. “The quartet takes us on a journey...a journey that has a strong sense of artistic purpose” acclaims Lyle Rebbeck, President of the Medicine Hat Jazz Society in the Medicine Hat News. The group has released a critically acclaimed album, Convergence. Bassist Daniel Fortin and drummer Fabio Ragnelli fill out the group for this concert. The group brings a unique aesthetic to the stage. Although all the musicians in the group are in their early twenties, the maturity and depth of their music is highly developed. They are “all about unity when they hit the stage” according to the Vancouver Sun. They work together to create sonic palettes that are spontaneous and interactive. Both Mah and Goodman are talented composers and gifted improvisers capable of taking their listeners on dramatic and varied journeys with the performance of each of their original songs.

Brent Mah is an award winning saxophone player recently recognized by CBC as a Canadian “rising star.” He has toured throughout North America and Asia, been featured on numerous albums and has performed with musicians such as Chucho Valdes, Jimmy Heath and Curtis Fuller.

Alex Goodman, recognized by Rolling Stones saxophonist Tim Ries as “one of the most gifted guitarists of his generation,” has established himself as an emerging presence on the Canadian and international jazz scenes. Alex has performed on 4 continents, released two albums as a leader and performed with notables such as Maria Schneider, John Patitucci and Richard Underhill.

CANADIAN JAZZ SERIES - DOUBLE BILL

LonghandLonghand is a co-operative trio comprised of Syke Brooks (drums, guitar and vocals), Russell Sholberg (bass and saw), and Tony Wilson (guitar and harmonica). These three versatile musicians are also members of the following ensembles: The Inhabitants, Veda Hille, Peggy Lee Band, Pugs and Crows to name a few, as well as being the rhythm section of the Tony Wilson 5tet.

The ensemble recently completed a recording that will be released in the late spring of 2011.

Longhand has a varied repertoire ranging from high energy free improv to melancholy tunes with beautiful melodies. The group explores a wide range of sonic possibilities with varied instrumental configurations like classic guitar trio; to harmonica, saw and percussion; or harmonica, vocals and bass to offer a few examples. Along with original music, Longhand offers their unique interpretations of jazz, blues and classic Motown tunes.

BraveheartBraveheart is a trio of musicians that play music with feeling. The group is not showy, refined or quaint and may not stimulate the intellectual in you. However, Braveheart may provoke the need to dance, the urge to yell out, the urge to question what is there and think outside the box. Their compositions are original and provocative, the delivery of them can be anything from gritty and raw to sweet and calming. The trio formation of saxophone, bass and drums promotes exploration that often moves beyond the lines of traditional form, providing ample opportunity for each voice to be heard. The bottom line for the group is to play honestly and passionately, bringing the audience along for the ride into the unknown.

Last Seen Headed (Leandre-Strid-Houle) brings together three major figures in the world of improvised music. The trio was founded at the invitation of the Vancouver International Jazz Festival in 2004, although the individual members of the trio had already known and performed with each other in various configurations since 1992.
