Amajority of serial killers have a history of sexualand physical abuse during childhood
.
In half of the serial killers families, the biologicalfather had left before the child was 12 years old. Inthe cases where the father didn't leave, he wasdomineering and abusive.
Delinquent acts such as pyromania, theft, andcruelty to animals were present in the childhoodsof most serial killers.

In 1998 , a federal law was passed by theUnited States Congress, titled: Protectionof Children from Sexual Predator Act of1998 (Title 18, United States Code,Chapter51, and Section 1111) this lawincluded a definition of serial killing.
The term 'serial killings' means a seriesof three or more killings, not less thanone of which occurred within the UnitedStates, having common characteristicssuch as to suggest the reasonablepossibility that the crimes were
committed by the same act or actors.

Visionary Serial Killer- Visionary serialkillers suffer from psychotic breaks withreality, sometimes believing they areanother person or are compelled to murder
by voices.

A good example of a visionaryserial killer is David Berkowitz.
Berkowitz confessed to killing sixpeople and wounding several
others in the course of eightshootings in New York between1976 and 1977; he has beenimprisoned for these crimes since1977. Berkowitz subsequentlyclaimed that he was commanded tokill by a demon who possessed hisneighbor's dog.

Missionary Serial Killers- Mission-oriented killers typically justify their actsas "ridding the world" of a certain type of
person perceived as undesirable, such ashomosexuals, prostitutes, or people ofdifferent ethnicity or religion; however,they are generally not psychotic. Some see
themselves as attempting to changesociety, often to cure a societal ill.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s,
Ridgway is believed to have murderedat least 71 women all who wereprostitutes or runaways.
In his confession, he acknowledgedthat he targeted prostitutes because
they were "easy to pick up and that hehated most of them because of hisreligious beliefs.

Hedonistic- This type of serial killer seeks thrills andderives pleasure from killing, seeing people asexpendable as a means to this goal. There are four sub-types of hedonistic serial killers.
Lust- Sex is the primary motive - Their sexualgratification depends on the amount of torture and
mutilation they perform on their victims.
Thrill -The primary motive of a thrill killer is to inducepain or create terror in their victims.
Comfort - Material gain and a comfortable lifestyle arethe primary motives of comfort killers
Power/ Control The main objective for this type ofserial killer is to gain and exert power over their victim.rape is not motivated by lust but as simply anotherform of dominating the victim

Jeffrey Dahmer was a lust serial killer
Dahmer murdered 17 men and boys between1978 and 1991, with the majority of the
murders occurring between 1987 and 1991.His murders involved rape ,dismemberment,necrophilia and cannabilism.
Dahmers apartment revealed multiplesevered human heads, multiple photographs
of murdered victims and human remains,severed hands and penises, and photographsof dismembered victims and human remainsin his refrigerator.

An example of a thrill killer is CarlCoralWatts. (SundayMorningSlasher)
Watts killed females between theages of 14 and 44 using methodssuch as strangulation, stabbing,
bludgeoning, and drowning. Sexual acts rarely occurred with
his victims.

H.H.Holmes is an example of a Comfort(Profit) Killer.
Holmes selected mostly female victims
from among his employees (many ofwhom were required as a condition ofemployment to take out life insurancepolicies for which Holmes would paythe premiums but also be the
beneficiary). He opened a hotel near the World Trade
Fair in Chicago strictly for this means.

* Loved to control his victims sex occurred,But was not his primary motive. Havingcontrol of the other persons actions gave
him great pleasure.* He typically approached them in public
places and feigned injury or disability, orimpersonated an authority figure.
* He sometimes revisited his secondary crimescenes for hours at a time, grooming andperforming sexual acts with thedecomposing corpses
