Latksy fkoi CLrMnr. Frcm pirlies wholeft Columbus, on Wednesday of last week, theMemphis Appeal Isarns that Gen. Folk was stillBuffering from the irj iry ha received on the

of the bursting of the cannon there, andGeneral Pillow was in command. A force was atwork cutting down the timber on the Missourishore opposite Columbus, so as to leave no am-

bush for the enemy iu any event. The people on

the Missouii oide are in utter consternation, andare flying from their houses. While the Ken-

tucky was up the river on Wednesday, her cap-

tain kicdly ferrk'l over live families to this side,

with their te;'.ms and household articles. Fugi-

tives say there are a large amount of corn andhogs in the country, all of which they expect tofall into the hinds of the enemy. It has beenforcibly kept there by the blockade. The people

were destroying or removing all flat.;, landingboats, and ferryboats that were along the shore. The ferryboat that crossed near Feint Pleasanthas been destroyed. There was a general expec-

tation at Columbus that there will soon be aninvasion of a more serious character than the lateone at Belmout.

Terrible Mimui al Vian ation. We learnwith inexpressible pain and regret from the Mem-

phis Appeal, of the 14: h, that accounts reeeivedin that city from Louisville represent that theemall-po- x of the most violent type his brokeout hore and is raging with great vklence amongboth blacks and whites. Our authorities oughtcertainly to appoint a ranitary commission tocheck the progress of the scourge, and Prof.Gen. Mitche!!, of Cincinnati, will doubtless lendthem a telescope that its exact locality may bediscovered. We may state to our kind and sym-

pathetic Memphis brethren that the prevailingepidemic should deter them from their contempla-

ted yi ait, withBuckner, to our city, for if theyccme here, it may turn out a very sad matter ifIhey should be spotted, uiaiked, and pitted avery grave affair indeed.

SECRETARY ClIASR ON THE ReF.FLLIuN.

Secretary Chase, ia the course of some remarksaddressed to the New York bankers, last weekaccord it g to the New York World gave strongand pointed assurances that the Government now

saw their way clearly to quell the rebellion; thatthey had information which warranted him insaying that the public would acoa hear glad ti-

dings of fuccesp, nvre startling and more effect-

ive in their results than those from Port Royaland the West; lh it neither the Government norGeneral McClellan ever had the least idea ofplacing the army in winter quarters, but, on thecontrary, the plans ail contemplatedregular, systematic, and energetic activity inpushing forward upon the rebels as prudence ar.djudgment dictated; that Government had amplefunds to supply every liability until February 1,and that all the machinery of the Departmentswaa gradually working into a very satisfactorystate of efficiency. The impression made uponthe assembled bank managers was increased con-

lidence in the Government, and a feeling thatrapid progress waa being mads to suppress therebellion.

Eivahi Evehi :tt is Fran e. The speechof Edward Everett delivered at the Boston Ban-

quet to Prince Nupjleon has been published inthe Paris Constitutionnel, with the following remark?:

Mr. Everett occupies a position in theNorthern States of America as a man of letters aswell as diplomatist; he has represented his coun-try an a minister plenipotentiary at London, and

e was the Enionist cindidate for the Vice Presidency of the States.

What eppeci illy strikes us in Mr. Everett'sfubstantial and instructive speech is the highappreciation of the part France fakes in Americanaffairs, and especially the deep sense of gratitudeit reveals towards the naihn which has sealedwith ics blood the independence of America, Itis true, then, that pjcp'es (7s pcupUs) are notungrateful.
