Open Secondary Schools 03
Open High Schools first opened its doors in 1974 as distance learning based
regular high school in Seoul and Busan. Currently, graduates of Open High
Schools have entered various professional fields and are diligently managing
their roles. Also, Open Middle Schools were first established in 2013 in Daegu
and Gwangju, and have been expanding nationwide ever since. Now there are
20 Open Middle Schools across South Korea. We produced the first graduating
class from Open Middle Schools in 2016, and many of the graduates moved on
to Open High Schools for further study.
As a commissioned operating organization, the Korean Educational Development Institute has been striving
to provide highly accessible quality educational opportunities through correspondence education to less
educated adults and adolescent school dropouts for more than 40 years with active support from the
Ministry of Education and Metropolitan and Provincial Offices of Education. In particular, the establishment
of Open Middle Schools in 2013 has made our distance learning based secondary education system more
complete, signaling a new leap forward.
In the context of increasing diversification in our society, Open Secondary Schools are in growing demand
for diverse educational alternatives. Such demand suggests the need for a smart learning environment
as well as various specialized programs that cater to students' diversity. To meet these needs, KEDI
will work hard to maintain continuity of Open Secondary Schools’ educational success, and to provide
quality education for disadvantaged learners through continuous introspection and discussion. Also,
KEDI is exploring the possibilities for promoting students’ right to learn by extending the utilization of
quality distance learning system of the Open Secondary Schools to the general population. KEDI will also
proactively undertake research on how this system can play a new educational role in future education.
I would like to thank our partners at the Ministry of Education and Metropolitan and Provincial Offices
of Education who always give us generous support. I also would like to express my deep gratitude to the
faculty of Open Secondary Schools and staff members at related organizations. I ask for your continued
interest and support.
Greetings

Learning experience recognition system
What is a learning experience recognition system? When a student of Open Secondary Schools has learning experiences outside of school, he can get his experiences evaluated to see if he can get them recognized as the equivalent of a related Open Secondary Schools'course.
System benefits
•Students of Open Secondary Schools can get their learning experiences outside of school recognized as the equivalent of a curriculum subject or creative experiential activity via the learning experience recognition system. For subjects recognized, students can get excused from a class or exam.
•If recognized via the learning experience recognition system, students can graduate a year earlier at maximum, and must complete the rest of curriculum.
※ Subjects recognized through learning experience recognition system will be processed as ‘complete’. Those subjects that are processed as ‘complete’ are not calculated in the GPA, so they are not reflected in school grade. Therefore, students intending to pursue higher education should check the admission information of the desired school.

Educational Activities at Open Secondary Schools
Make the first step toward hope with u-learning based Open Secondary Schools, where dreams of learning come true.
Dreaming of a hole in one – golf club is very popularOpen High School affiliated with Seohyun High School has been running sports clubs for various sports such as badminton and golf. Among them, golf is very popular, because a would-be professional golfer has been offering her talent as a golf instructor. She is in 12th grade of this Open High School. Active and voluntary participation in these clubs serves as an energizer for school life, and students are highly satisfied with these clubs since these activities are done collectively with club friends.
Global Open High School - A visit to sister schools in JapanSince 2013, Open High Schools affiliated with Suwon Girls’ High School and Susung High School have made alliance with Japanese open high schools affiliated with Hiroshima Prefectural Nishi High School and Hiroshima Prefectural Higashi High School. These schools visit each other once a year and exchange letters throughout the year. Students at open schools in both countries have formed a strong bond through their common identity as open high school students through various cross-cultural exchange activities. Students are gaining a greater understanding of the other nation’s education culture, and are experiencing an increasing sense of joy and meaning in school life.
Mentoring programs boost school lifeOpen Middle School affiliated with Jeju Jeil Middle School has been running a customized 1:1 mentoring system with the help of teenage students in the nearby regions to support the learning of adult students. To meet diverse needs of adult students, mentoring is offered for computer utilization, cyber learning, subject learning, and creative experiential activities. Through such customized mentoring, the school seeks to minimize the learning deficits of adult students and increase their school life satisfaction.
Faculty accompanied walking excursions strengthen both the mind and bodyOpen Middle School affiliated with Daegu High School has been running various programs for youth class students. Last April, 10 teachers and 30 students went on a three-day walking excursion from the Mijo port of the South Sea to Daeraengi Village in Gachon, a distance of 41km in total. With the teachers and friends supporting each other, everyone was able to arrive at the destination safely. This walking excursion strengthened students’ mind and body.
