Weekly Broadsheet
Spring Term
9 March 2018
www.lancingprepworthing.co.uk
Dear Parents,
What a relief to have some sunshine this week after our freezing spell last week; it actually has felt
that spring is in the air for brief moments!
The Year 8 pupils have been working extremely hard on their mock exams this week and they
deserve some down time at the weekend. We are looking forward to seeing Year 8 parents next
week at our parents’ evening on Wednesday and the following week on Tuesday 20th March.
Our Monday assembly this week was led by Beatrice T and a team of Year 7 pupils. They spoke
about the importance of kindness and Beatrice’s idea of ‘peer angels’ throughout the school. Ask
your children to tell you about this – it is a truly wonderful plan. We will be running our peer angel
scheme until the end of this term and I hope that it brings smiles to many faces.
On Wednesday, our Reception children had a lovely time at the Novium Museum at Chichester
dressing up as pirates! (see page 6).
On Thursday afternoon, a group of Year 7 pupils went to the Lancing College French speaking
competition having prepared some poetry and prose. They all made us very proud (see page 3).
Today we are celebrating World Book Day, postponed from last Thursday, and the children and
their teachers have made a phenomenal effort dressing up as their favourite characters. There has
been much laughter here. The point of World Book Day is to celebrate books of course and it is a
timely reminder that sharing a love for books with our children is hugely important in their
development as readers. Reading, as we all know opens the door to learning. Perhaps this weekend
it would be fun to set aside some time to talk about favourite books with your children. I have
found that familiar books can be a source of comfort and joy even when it might appear that the
children are far too old to listen to stories any more.
Many congratulations to our Pupil Library Assistants elected this year. They are, Max W, Emma S,
Grace C and Cal N in Year 6, Pippa S, Beatrice T and George C in Year 7 and Alex B and Bradley H
in Year 8.
Also very warm congratulations to William T, Year 7, who won the U16 Grade 5 National Tennis
Centre Outdoor Tennis Tournament on 25th February. He is currently ranked second in the county
in the U12 age group. William is definitely one to watch for the future!
Danny B, in Year 5, was placed second in two classes at the Worthing Music and Arts Festival. What
is remarkable about this achievement is that he has only been playing his violin since the beginning
of Year 2 and that he came second in the Grade 3 to 5 class when he is still preparing for his Grade 3
exam and also second in the U12 class when he is only nine years old. Amelia G, in Year 4 passed
three dance exams: Freestyle Bronze with Honours, Latin Samba with Highly Commended and
Ballroom Foxtrot with Commended. Well done Amelia!

will require to stay safe on the roads. If this proves successful we will organise it every year for the
Year 6 children.
On Monday, we have Alison Lapper MBE coming to visit the school. This is very exciting for us
and she is giving her time generously for our children. She will speak to all the children in assem-
bly and work with Years 3 and 4 on some mouth and feet painting during the morning.
Francesca Milling will prepare the Prep children for Alison’s visit in assembly on Friday and the
Pre-prep children will be spoken to in their classrooms with their class teachers. You might wish to
watch this video with them over the weekend so that they can prepare some great questions for
her. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXtWUfuRi1w

E-safety
It has come to light this week that there may be some e-safety issues when pupils are using apps at
home on their tablets and ipads. One in particular, ‘Talking Angela’, is an app which asks for the
child’s age and where they live. As part of their e-safety in school, we ask pupils never to divulge
this type of information when online. However, pupils may do this innocently as part of the game
or the way the app has been designed. Please could you check the various apps which your child is
using, particularly ‘Talking Angela’. Many thanks for your support,

GENERAL INFORMATION
French Speaking Competition
On Thursday afternoon Beatrice T, Alex M, James N, Harry S, Pippa S and
Noa S-P went to the Lancing College French speaking competition. Each
entrant had to learn a French poem off by heart and prepare a talk on a
subject of their choice. They all performed with confidence and impressed
the judges with the variety of their talks, which ranged from favourite
football teams to talks about the equality of the sexes, so pertinent for
International Women’s Day! They all acquitted themselves incredibly well
and I am so very proud of you all. Huge ‘Félicitations’ to Noa S-P who was
a winner, having only started French in September.

CULTURE CLUB
Calling Culture Club Consultants aged 4 + for ‘The Magic Cutlass’
This week we have 4 tickets to give away to some of our younger students. On Sunday 18 March at
11.30am, Captain Flinn and the Pirate Dinosaurs will be taking children on a new adventure.
“Flinn is back! Les Petits return with the sequel to their hugely successful Captain Flinn and the
Pirate Dinosaurs based on the book by Giles Andreae and Russell Ayto. When Flinn, Pearl and
Tom are in the middle of their school play their old nemesis, Mr T the T-Rex, appears and kidnaps
the children forcing them to hunt for the secretive Magic Cutlass; a sword that grants the holder any
wish! The children are whisked away for another fantastic adventure to a world of devious dino-
saurs, deep sea dangers and smelly sausages! It's all aboard, me hearties, for a real live pirate ad-
venture!” https://worthingtheatres.co.uk/captain-flinn-and-the-pirate-dinosaurs-2/
If you are available on this date, and would like your child’s name put in the hat, please could you
send a short email to [email protected]. Mrs Beeby will pull name from the hat on Monday
and I will give the winning child their tickets to take home in their school bag. When emailing,
please do say if you would be prepared to accept 2 tickets (for one adult and one child) as this
would enable two of our families to attend. However, if you are a family of 4, and would like all the
tickets, that is also fine. As long as your name is pulled from the hat first…they will be yours.

Easter Assembly
The Nursery and Pre-prep Easter assembly will take place in the school hall at 9.30am on
Wednesday 21 March. All welcome. Refreshments will be served after the assembly.
Novium Museum Trip
On Wednesday the children in Reception came to school dressed as pirates! They
sailed in the good ship ‘Minibus’ to the Novium Museum in Chichester where
they took part in a variety of activities based around the subject of Pirates and
Smugglers. They were also able to see a real sword, pistol and ‘grog’ bottle used
by smugglers from the Chichester area many years ago. On their return to school
the class had a pirate picnic in the classroom, sang pirate songs with
Mrs Goodson and took part in a treasure hunt around the school, fol-
lowing clues to find the treasure! Back in the classroom, in true pirate
fashion, the booty was divided up equally and taken home (to be eat-
en!). The children had a wonderful time at the Novium and were beau-
tifully behaved throughout the trip. A huge ‘thank you’ to Mrs Alexan-
der for coming with us!

Year 4 Red Team v Dorset House Won 1-0
The boys were fantastic on Tuesday afternoon in their first hockey game of the season.
In a tight game, the boys performed with high levels of effort and skill to match Dorset House. A
very well worked goal by Alex W and scored by Joseph M allowed the boys to sneak the victory. A
superb performance; well done! Player of the match: Joseph M
Year 4 Blue Team v Dorset House Lost 0-1
In a tight game the boy played some excellent hockey on astro turf. The boys grew in confidence
and came close to score on several occasions. However, it was Dorset House who scored with the
last hit of the game to win. A valiant effort by all those boys involved. Player of the match: Oscar G
Year 3 Team v Dorset House Lost 0-8
A huge learning curve for all the boys participating in their first ever hockey match. Due to
inexperience, the boys found themselves 0-6 down at half time. However, they vastly improved in
the second half and looked far more competent. A great effort—they should be very proud how
quickly they adapted throughout the game. Players of the match: Zakir K and Logan T.
Mr Richards
U9 Netball V Prebendal Lost 3-6
On Tuesday we played Prebendal. We started this game really well scoring two quick goals. We
moved the ball down the court well and created some good space. Grace W made some amazing
interceptions but as the game went on we couldn’t capitalise on this. The girls continued to work
hard but needed to communicate better. Well done to all the girls and thank you to the parents
who came to support us. Player of the Game: Grace W and Yasmin G
U8 Netball V Prebendal U9 Lost 0-3
On Tuesday we played Prebendal’s U9 team. This was a tough game and we had to focus on
accurate passing and the way we moved the ball down the court. Prebendal were strong so we
struggled to get the ball into the circle. In the second half we worked on moving more towards the
ball. This improved as the game went on. The girls played well trying hard to keep up with
Prebendal’s quick pace. Well done to all the girls who played in this tricky game. Thank you to the
parents who came to support us. Player of the game: Maya and Chloe F.

U9 Netball v Windlesham School Won 6-1
On Thursday we played a great game against Windlesham. The girls worked well as a team and
there were some wonderful interceptions by Grace all over the court. We thought carefully about
our footwork and passing ahead of the player, kept the ball well and there was great team work be-
tween Amelia and Autumn in the D. They both scored some super goals. This was a brilliant team
performance—well done girls and thank you to the parents who came to support us. Player of the
Game: Autumn M
U8 Netball v Windlesham School U9 Lost 0-6
On Thursday we played against Windlesham’s U9 team. We used the game as a training game to
build our confidence and experience. What an improvement the girls are making. We made some
great interceptions but struggled to get the ball to our shooters in the D. We kept our heads up and
really worked on our passing and moving into space. Well done to all the girls who played. Thank
you to the parents who came to support us. Player of the game: Kaylee B
Mrs Fudge
Girls Netball U10 v Great Ballard (Won 6-0)
What a game! Our girls demonstrated excellent teamwork both in defence and attack. With quick
passes and good communication the girls drove down the court. Great Ballard played really well
and tried hard to mark our girls, although once LPW regained possession there was no stopping
them. Brilliant game. Girl of the game: Erin M
Girls Netball U10 v Great Ballard (Draw 5-5)
This was a very exciting game. Our girls started off really well scoring 3 goals in the first quarter.
Great Ballard came fighting back in the second by using more bounce passes to gain possession over
our tall girls. In the third quarter, both teams were tiring, however Sophie managed to score a third
goal with the support of Emma. It was a tense final quarter where we managed to score a goal
taking us in the lead, although Great Ballard managed to score in the final seconds. Excellent effort
and communication throughout the match. Girl of the game: Anna W
