Thank you to everyone for supporting, helping
and donating to the supper it was a very
enjoyable and well supported evening.
As a somewhat new Leighton resident (January 2018)
I'd like to mention a book club I have started. It's
primarily online only and can be found on Facebook
by searching for Bookworm Reading Club.
I'm sure there are many book lovers in Leighton and
this book club would help bring people together with
a shared love of books. I look forward to hearing from
you, Martin.

‘Excellent’ ResultThe Open Door Family Centre is a non profit registered charity which has been established in Welshpool for over twenty years , it is well known to some residents of Leighton who in the past have volunteered and been involved with the charity. It is with dedicated staff and a team of voluntary trustees that we continue to promote and enhance the development , education and welfare of children and families within the local community. In a recent Estyn ,CIW ( Care Inspectorate Wales) report it provided Open Door with three excellent ratings for - Well Being, Care & Development & Leadership & Management. It is the only non - maintained nursery setting in Powys 2019 with three excellent ratings. Loyalty, commitment, working together and the excellent care of the children who attend Open Door have all contributed to this achievement.
We are now looking to ‘New Horizons’ and look forward to welcoming any new trustees to join our team , if you would like any further information please contact:

Compere David and quizmaster Catherine Williams who compiled the Quiz so
successfully. (Catherine is mentioned several times in this Newsletter for her
teaching in Leighton School of the younger members of the Thomas family. She
also recently completed the Cardiff Half Marathon so huge congratulations to
her. What a woman!)
Duncan & Carol Alexander who won the prize for the most inventive team name
being ‘Alexander’s’.
The winning team celebrating with ‘Celebrations’ (and quite alot of alcohol).
Thank you to Lesley, Catherine & David and everyone who provided the food,
draw prizes, sold tickets, cleared away, washed tablecloths and generally helped

In Leighton—Organiser Lesley Jones of Redwood Close
who did an amazing job, seen here with some of her
posse that included Matt & Pete of Park Cottage who
proved to be very knowledgeable on many subjects. The
evening was not only extremely enjoyable and very well attended, it also
raised a remarkable £738 for Village Hall improvements. Lesley is already
planning the next one in the Spring so watch out for that.

winnings at the Bingo evening with profits
shared between the Village Hall and School.
A stoic band of villagers, keen bingo players,
children and parents braved awful rain on the
evening of Wednesday 9th Oct to again enjoy a
great evening of Bingo. The new cash prizes
proved very popular with the winners and this
will be repeated when we hold the next one in
the Spring. Thanks to all that came, helped in
any way, donated prizes and beverages but
special thanks go to Rod Stevens for again
being the caller extraordinaire ably assisted by
Di. The fun evening raised £111.50.

WEDDING CONGRATULATIONS.
Congratulations to Jane Williams and Martin Davies on
their recent wedding held at Trelystan Church, with
their reception held in a marquee alongside so their
guests could enjoy the stunning setting. Jane was born
and brought up on the side of the Long Mountain and
she also brought up her beautiful daughters here in
Leighton. (Jane’s sister Deb is Chair of our newly
formed Long Mountain WI.)
Jane’s girls are Lois who is now living and working in
Manchester and Natalie is an
accountant in London. Last
week Natalie went to Japan to
watch the Wales rugby match
and in the stadium she got
chatting to the guy sitting next
to her and realised he used to
live in Leighton also. What a
small world. J.W.

We should give a village medal to Mrs Iris Thomas who has been attending Leighton Primary School events for 65 years! Her daughter Hazel started Leighton School in 1954 (Nooo that must be a typing error we hear you cry), followed by her sons, grandchildren and great grandchild with the latest one being Robert who left Leighton School in July this year to go to High School.
Mrs Iris Thomas who lives at Hirddol at the Farm Buildings, still cooks her legendary family Sunday lunches and it will come as no surprise to hear that last month at the wedding of her grandson George to Katy Higgs she was still chatting at 1am.
When Iris and the late Jack Thomas came to Leighton they first lived at The Hawys and their daughter Hazel skipped off from there down to school in 1954 and was taught by Mr Knight (Head) and Miss Noreen Parry with Mrs Jones doing the cooking. Another highlight remembered by Hazel was that Mr Knight used to throw tennis balls at the rats running across the beams! (A fact not often mentioned in an Estyn Inspection today I fear.)
The Thomas family then moved to farm at Hirddol and from there Hazel’s brother Bryan started Leighton School in 1965 and was taught by Mr Penry Thomas (Head) and Miss Parry. Bryan remembers Mr Penry Thomas stopping the ice cream van when it went past and buying all of the children an ice cream. This was possible as there was only a low roadside wall around the school with a handy wicket onto the road for the pupils to retrieve the footballs! (As many of you know Penry is still a frequent visitor to Leighton – when he isn’t on the golf course as his great niece Bethan lives in Redwood Close.)
The youngest Thomas son Andrew started Leighton
(L-R) Lauren, Hazel, Robert, Bryan, Jazmine, Andrew, Amy.
Seated is Mrs Iris Thomas in front of Leighton School
School in 1969 and was taught by Miss Batch, Mrs Ridings and Mr Williams (Head). Andrew then went on to farm at Gwyn’s Barn and his daughter Amy Wainwright started school in Leighton in January 2004 and was taught by Mrs Catherine Williiams, Mrs Jan Williams, Mrs Wray & Mrs Edwards and in Yr 6 Miss Jones & Mr Mulvey (Head).
Hazel’s granddaughter Lauren Jones started there in April 2008 – 2015 and the same year Andrew’s youngest daughter Jasmine Wainwright started in September 2008 – 2015 and they were taught by Mrs Catherine Williams, Mrs Jan Williams, Mrs Wray & Mrs Edwards , Miss Mills, Mr Richards, Mrs Leach, Miss Jones, Mrs Senior and Mr Mulvey (Head).
The Thomas family’s school years in Leighton.
Congratulations to Janet & Mick Sayers of Church Close who
recently celebrated their Diamond Wedding anniversary and are
seen here with the card they received from the Queen.
Trelystan, Church, Township and Community was publi-shed in September after more than three year’s work by local historians Doreen Bowen and Felicity Bevan. Newsletter readers may remember the July 2017 issue announcing the project and appealing for local information, stories and
background. The official book launch was at Trelystan Church House on 5th October and included a fine exhibition1 of maps documents and memoirs —the source materials for the unfolding history and stories of the area. The publication itself is extremely impressive. Doreen assembled the text as Word documents and Felicity used her graphic design skills and publishing software to create a totally professional product. With dozens of illustrations, including 20 reproduced in full colour, the pages are a delight to look at with an elegant well spaced font—a serene reading experience (compared to the ragbag of typefaces shouting for attention in this newsletter). The book publishers are B&B—no prizes for working that out. Welshpool Printers produced the hard copy and glossy covers. A truly local project from start to finish—a tremendous contribution to the history of our area. The history starts with the first human habitation on
Long Mountain spanning 7500 – 1500 BC including burial sites, bronze vessels and other artefacts—some still being discovered quite
recently. There is little evidence of arable farming so the earliest inhabitants of the area would have been hunter gatherers using flint for arrowheads, spears and scrapers. However, flint does not occur naturally in Wales but it is found in many prehistoric sites. This suggests trading between travellers from other areas; no customs zones or backstops then.
The precursor of the church at Telystan may have been set up by Saint Beuno a 7th century Welsh

Carol Harris's latest children's book was launched
in September at the Old Oak bookshop in
Llanidloes, where she did a short talk about some
of the topics in the book, including gut bacteria,
blue light, use of mobiles and taking care of your
feet!
The book, called Adventures of the Hogball and
aimed at 7-11 year olds, is about a hedgehog with
special powers, who meets lots of other animals,
including bats, moths and kangaroos, all of which
explain about different aspects of health - both
physical and mental. It’s the second in a series –
the first of which, Adventures of the Chickalloon –
is about ecology.
Both books are illustrated and the Hogball book
has 25 pictures for children to colour themselves.
They are on Amazon, but Carol has copies at home,
so if you’d like any you can save the £2.80 postage
Amazon would charge; just phone her on 01938
553 430 for more information. And both books
also help animal charities; £1 from each
‘Chickalloon’ goes to the Bumblebee Conservation
Trust and £1 from each ‘Hogball’ goes to the British
Hedgehog Preservation Society. So you could solve
some of your Christmas presents and help wildlife
at the same time (and get a discount if you have
copies of both books).
abbot. His name comes from the Latin ‘Bonus’ and is also anglicised to ‘Bono’ (don’t even go there!). After this it is not clear how the ‘Trelystan’ name is derived. There is a somewhat mythical connection with Elystan Glodrdd from one of the Welsh royal tribes who may have died on Caer Digoll (the Beacon Ring) in 1010 but there are no documents referring to such a connection until the 16th century.
William the Conqueror’s assessors referred to Trelystan as WolStanmind one of its Saxon names; an area which once possessed 3 hides2
but by 1086 was wasted and valueless. These wasted areas straddled each side of Offa’s dyke and were only used for hunting. The region was beset by territorial disputes and insurrections for hundreds of years finally culminating in Owain Glyndwr’s last attempt to achieve Welshindependence. Caus Castle was largely destroyed during this period. The turning point was in 1485 when the
nominally Welsh Henry Tudor marched through Wales via Caer Digoll to victory at Bosworth field and the start of a new dynasty.
Book Launch & Exhibition
The Quitclaim Document 1302 between Peter Corbet II and his Welsh tenants at Trelystan is a statement of the duties of both parties; the
tenants gained new territory and protected access to woods and
fields in return for a rent of 5 shillings a year and 3 days work carrying timber to Caus Castle.
In 1847the ancient practice of tithing was replaced by laws giving land-owners the
right to make annual
payments instead of supporting the
church with 1/10th of their farm produce.
Previously Trelystan township, with Leighton and Rhos Goch were still paying tythes in kind to
the rector of Worthen. Maps like this were compiled for the
new arrangements. Tythe rents charges at the time for
over 20 familiar local properties are
listed in tiny £ s d amounts for indvidual fields.
Caus Castle ruins in the 18th century
Moving through the centuries to events within living memory there are detailed accounts of local participants in the Great War; many memoirs of surviving in such adverse weather conditions—remember 1947 or 1962? And the great Mongomeryshire Experiment which was the first cultivation of upland hills on Long Mountain growing potatoes—much needed food during WWII.
The final chapter takes us through to the TrelystanChurch Fete in 1976 and ends with the young competitors Egg & Spoon race in the 2009 Church fete.
Trelystan, Church, Township and Community is available from the Welspool Information
Centre priced £12.

The campaign has really made the governors and parents think twice about climate change. We've been talking to the
headteacher Mr. Harte for more information
"Mr Harte, whose idea was this climate change protest?”
"It was my idea because I think it's important for all children to take part in protecting for our planet, because we've only
got one.”
“So, what do these banners that you're preparing say?”
”Well, firstly they are printed on recycled paper, which is important especially when everything we do seems to damage
our environment anyway. Our messages are act now before it's too late, and one earth, because basically it's the only
one we've got, we haven't got a planet B.”
“What is climate change all about?”
“It's basically about the earth becoming too warm and we are the cause of that, so we need to change our behaviour, so
that it doesn't get any worse.”
“What can you do about it?”
“You can do the small things such as reduce your plastic use and reduce your energy use which is also known as reducing
your carbon footprint and perhaps look at changing your diet a little.”
All about Eco teamBy Lily and Lucy
Lately our school have chosen our Eco team members. In Eco team we go litter picking around the school and are trying to get a Green Flag award by getting an Eco code and monitoring how much electric we use and how much rubbish we leave outside. We also have to choose a couple of the ten different topics to work on, these include Energy, Marine, Healthy Living and Litter. Here are 5 ways to save energy: Switch over to LED bulbs, to Recycle, If you are not in a room turn the lights of and take advantage of natural sunlight. We have already been progressing with Litter, we go litter picking and are always making sure we put our fruit peel in the llama bin. We may also have a go at the Seven Steps. These include: Action plan and curriculum links. Lucy has bought a metal straw and a straw cleaner made out of iron. Lily has brought beeswax wrap for her sandwich. Lucy has also brought a different type of wrap it is fabric and it has velcro to seal it!!! We are also holding a competition to create an Eco slogan. The winner of that competition will have their slogan made into an eco code.
School CouncilThe school council organise Premier League stars and have meetings at lunch break or snack break. We look for people that are good, kind and helpful. You will be given a certificate and sticker in Celebration Assembly. The Premier League certificates acknowledge children that are ambitious, fair, connected, inspiring and an over all star. If you would like to join School council then you have to apply in the next year. If you want to join you have to write about how kind
and helpful you are. Mr Harte picks 9 people to be the school council members.
