In June 2016 Kuwait filed a $1 billion lawsuit in a Swisscourt against the International Olympic Committee(IOC) after the IOC suspended the Kuwaiti Olympic

committee in October 2015 over recently passed legisla-tion that allowed the government to interfere in Kuwaitisports federations. The IOC’s ruling effectively bannedKuwaiti athletes from competing in the 2016 Rio deJaneiro Olympic Games under the Kuwaiti flag. Instead, the Kuwaiti team competed asindependent athletes. Two Kuwaitiathletes, Fehaid Al-Deehani andAbdullah Al-Rashidi, won a goldand a bronze medal, respectively,in shooting events.
