KS1 – KIDZANIA PRE-VISIT LESSON PLAN
LESSON 1
Starter Powerpoint slide 2 Explain to the children that you are going to be looking at them in the future. You want them to travel forward in time to when they are old enough to get a job and earn money.
10 mins Powerpoint slide 3 Many children already have access to some money through pocket money. Ask the children to work in pairs or small groups to discuss the things they like to spend their pocket money on. Then, ask them what makes them choose what to spend their money on. Work out how they can afford to buy those things, how do they get the money? How do their parents/carers get the money? Take answers across the whole class.
10 mins Powerpoint slide 4 Explain to the children that you have arranged for them to visit a City for Children called KidZania. Show Powerpoint slide 4 with the picture of KidZania and ask the children to name the different things that they can see from the picture. Ask them to describe what they think the visit will entail. Establish that KidZania is a place that the children can learn, earn and spend.
35 mins KidZania Board Game resource on A3 paper Powerpoint slide 5 (Please note that you will need to supply a dice and counters) Board game testing mental maths ability using the fun activities at KidZania. Print the board game on A3 paper and split the children into groups of 4. Explain to the children that they will have 50 Kidzos to spend and it is the luck of the dice to see if they can complete the board game with money left over. The board game will allow them to move through the different activities at KidZania and prepare them for the different choices they will make when they visit.
KS1 – KIDZANIA PRE-VISIT LESSON PLAN
LESSON 2
Starter Remind the children they are going to KidZania, where they can choose some jobs to do and earn money. They can then spend what they earn.
35 mins Powerpoint slide 7 Ask the children to do the following worksheets:
• KidZania Investigations• KidZania Spending Activities – 10 kidZos or 20 kidZos
(The KidZania Spending Activities are differentiated for different abilities in your class, so that you can choose which activity suits which groups of children).
15 mins Powerpoint slide 8-9 Activities Matrix KidZania Choices There are over 60 activities that you can do at KidZania. Here are three examples. Using the Activities Matrix, ask the children to talk about the different jobs and think about the skills and knowledge they need for each. Ask the children to complete the KidZania Choices worksheet to help them plan their visit. All children.
10 mins PLENARY Ask children to share their planned learning journeys for their trip to KidZania. Recap mental and written number operations used in the different maths challenges that the children have carried out.
KS1 – KIDZANIA PRE-VISIT LESSON PLAN
EXTRA ACTIVITIES FOR ADDITIONAL LEARNING
Maths worksheets - differentiated for ability and classroom focus:
20 mins Worksheet A - KidZania Investigations KidZania real-life maths problems orientation worksheet. Different activities and earning and spending word challenges. Differentiated through outcome.
20 mins Worksheet B - KidZania Spending Activity (10 kidZos) Word problems using 10 Kidzos as a base for maths operations. Mixed ability activity.
20 mins Worksheet C - KidZania Spending Activity (20 kidZos) Work problems using 20 Kidzos as a base for maths operations. Extension activities.
20 mins Worksheet D - KidZania Choices Different word problems based on the KidZania experience. Mixed ability activity.
