Move away and Check First with the grownup in charge at your house. Your job is to Check First before you change your plan. Your grownups can tell you if it is okay for you to go to your neighbor’s house.

Move away and go find the grownup in charge at your house so you can Check First. Your grownup can go and answer the door to see who it is.

Practicing Moving Away and Checking First
Step 1: Coaching: Set the stage by saying where the child is, where safety is, and who you are pretending to be.
Annette, let’s pretend you are sitting in the front of your
house, and the bunny is Grandma inside of the house... Now use your imagination and pretend
that I am a stranger...
Step 2: Role Play: Start the role play, using the child’s name.
Hi Annette! Don’t you remember me? I am your
Grandma’s neighbor.
Huh??
Step 3: Coaching: Stop and coach the child to stand up and move away.
Annette, remember that even though somebody knows your name, he or she can still be a
stranger. As soon as you notice the stranger, your job is to stand
up so you can move away.
Step 4: Role Play: Continue the role play.
Come on, you remember me, don’t you? You played at my
house last week!

Step 5: Coaching: If the child answers, stop and coach the child to not answer and move away and check first.
Annette- Keep moving away from the pretend stranger... and re-
member not to answer. Go all the way to safety and check with the bunny who is your pretend
grandma.

Step 6: Role Play: Continue the role play.
Why are you walking away from me? I just wanted
to say hello.
Grandma, there is a stranger who knows
my name.
Step 7: Coaching: Answer questions the child might have to reinforce that it is okay to walk away from someone in order to check with your grownup.
What if he really was Grandma’s friend and I forgot?
That’s OK! The safety rule is that as soon as things change,
your job is to check first.

Pete says that the bus is not going to come today. Rosa says that she is going to CHECK FIRST with her sister before she changes her plan about waiting for the bus. She walks away, even though Pete is being very nice and she would love to have a ride to school.
But Rosa, we heardon the radio that

Rosa is tired and a friendly man she meets at a dance offers her a ride home. Rosa knows that she is safer if she follows her plan about staying with her friends.

Set the stage by putting two chairs next to each other to make a bus stop.
Have a student pretend to be waiting for the bus. Greet the student by name.
Make up a story about why the student should accept a ride with you. Coach the student to say that she or he needs to check first.
Pretend to have hurt feelings. Coach the student to leave and check first anyway.
Congratulate the student for checking first instead of accepting the ride.

Let’s imagine that this is a bus stop, and I am someone you know a little
but not well.
