DECATUR – For manyyears, the director of theMacon County Queen Pageant,Melissa Muirheid, has wantedto open up the residencyrequirement for contestantsoutside of Macon County.
Her wish will come true forthis year's Miss Macon CountyPageant.
This year the event will have17 contestants between theages of 16 and 23 years oldvying for queen. “We usuallyonly have six or seven,”Muirheid said.
The age limit for the MaconCounty Junior Miss category is11 to 15 years old. A specialcategory for girls ages five to10 years old allows the youngladies the opportunity to expe-rience a real pageant.
The pageant will begin at 2p.m. Sunday, Aug. 9, in theDecatur Civic Center.
Contestants for the Miss andJunior Miss contests arejudged on their personal inter-views, communication skills,stage presentation and facialbeauty. Last year, Muirheidexchanged the swimsuit com-petition for fitness wear.“Everybody has a fitness outfitin their closet,” she said.
Muirheid believes the switchalso helped the pageant gain inpopularity. “Besides, no onewalks around in a swimsuitand heels,” she said.
The contestants have been
preparing for the pageant forthree weeks, meeting on a reg-ular basis with Muirheid and alist of rules. “It's not like youjust walk on stage,” she said.“A lot of the girls see the com-mitment and leave.”
After a queen has beenselected, she is required toattend speaking engagements,community projects and visitorganizations. “Any time some-one asks us, we go,” Muirheidsaid.
Sophia Schwalbach wascrowned the 2014 Macon Coun-ty Queen. Together withMuirheid, the two have beenpromoting the pageant theentire year through socialmedia and one-on-one connec-tions. Schwalbach has manyduties as the reigning queen,such as any community events,parades, other county fairs andradio programs. “It's all aboutpublic speaking and it's mademe grow so much,” she said.“Not a day goes by that I'm notdoing something as queen.”
