DENA CHERN MEMORIAL
MIDOS FAIR AWARDS
B aruch Hashem, we enjoyed an impressive end
to a most productive and fulfilling year. The
end of year assemblies featured …. The climax of the assemblies on Wednesday
was the bestowing of the Dena Chern Midos
Tovos Awards to five deserving graduating fifth
graders. The award has been established by
family and friends of Mrs. Dena Chern, A”H, Dena
bas Mordechai, to perpetuate her legacy of
concern for transmission of proper Midos to the
next generation. We were honored to have Mr. and
Mrs. Chernomodik in attendance at the
assemblies. The awardees received a beautiful
certificate and a valuable Sefer. Their names will
appear on the special plaque in our multi-purpose
room for generations of Toras Emes students to
see and emulate.

Dear Parents,
Summer reading lists aren’t only for kids. As we take time to reflect upon the past
year and marvel at the growth and accomplishments of our children, appreciating the
bracha they bring into our lives, we know we cannot rest on our laurels. The summer
months are a perfect time for parents to snatch a few extra minutes each day and
spend time with a book – a productive, practical, meaningful book.
There are many valuable books on parenting, be it from a Torah or secular source.
Every book has something to offer yet no one book has everything. I am once again
sharing a list of recommended books and encourage you to pick one up, go through it
and choose one or two ideas to incorporate into your life on an ongoing basis. It
sounds like a very small step – but all successful endeavors are made up of small
steps.
Every new milestone in a child’s life brings new challenges and new opportunities. To
make sure your child flourishes at each stage that comes along, be prepared with a
proven approach to successfully handle the situation. Your child will be glad you did.
Best wishes for a rejuvenating summer and meaningful reading!
Have a wonderful Shabbos,
Rabbi Kalman Baumann

Dear Parents,
As the last day of our 2012-2013 academic year is upon us I am, as an educator and child
advocate, compelled to review the past year. Clearly, both roles are intertwined and very
connected but, I believe, there is a subtle difference between the two that plays a significant part
in the blossoming of your children at Toras Emes. Our school provides a foundation in education
that equips our students with the skills necessary for success in their ensuing educational
endeavors. We emphasize reading and its integral components, math and critical thinking, an
appreciation for the world around us, its history and its colorful landscape. We whet the curiosity
of the children with scientific experiments and opportunities for hands-on experiences. We
acquaint all of our students with the formal writing process so that, by grade three, they can
produce a well-constructed, informative composition, be it narrative or expository. Opportunities
for enrichment, remediation, use of technology, research, and physical education abound at
Toras Emes, and we are proud of our efforts.
What remains in what children need beyond the skills embedded in education. They need
encouragement, support and attention. They need an “ear” to hear about the highlights of their
day or their frustrations. They need guidance when discussing friendships that may be
disappointing or hopes that did not materialize. All children love the precious moments of reading
with an adult, as a reader or listener, both for the personal attention as well as for the reading
itself. Even looking at your child’s homework says, “I am invested in you and interested in what
you do.”
I do my best to connect with your children so that they feel loved and respected. However, I have
expectations, whether they are memorizing poems or the Presidents, making eye contact when
we speak, or maintaining a neat classroom so that they take pride in their environment. We will
continue to provide your children with the academic skills that they need. Partner with us as you
shower your children with love and attention, reasonable expectations, personal time together,
and an environment at home that is secure and propitious for learning and reading.
Wishing you all a wonderful and safe summer.
Looking forward to seeing you on August 26, 2013, IY’H.
Sincerely,
Dr. Deborah Lerer Secular Studies Principal
