Today’s consumers have more shopping op-tions at their disposal than they did in years past. Though the Internet may put the world at one’s fingertips, more and more shoppers are discov-ering that buying locally makes for a superior shopping experience. The benefits associated with shopping locally are many, and the following are just a few rea-sons why shoppers may want to look no further than their own communities when planning their next shopping excursions.Keeps money in the local economyLocally-owned businesses often put a larger share of their revenue back into their commu-nities. Small business owners may be more inclined to employ local residents, giving more
people in the community solid employment. Business owners may reach out and support other neighborhood efforts, such as fundraising initiatives for charities and schools. By shop-ping at local stores, you have a hand in support-ing these efforts as well.Save moneyWhen factoring in travel time and the cost of fuel, shopping locally makes more sense than driving to a faraway mall. In addition, repeat customers who establish a rapport with a local business owner may find that such owners are more inclined to price match or work with loyal customers to find lower prices through suppli-ers.Diversify your home and lifestyle
Shoppers who prefer more unique styles may find local businesses cater to their needs better than large chain stores. Larger retailers offer the same products to customers regardless of where those customers live, so a person in California may be decorating his or her home with the same furnishings as a person in North Carolina. But local shops tend to produce more unique items that are not available nationwide. Promote entrepreneurshipSmall businesses are an essential element to the country’s economic growth. By shopping local-ly, consumers are showing their support for this important segment of the national economy.Help establish local prideIndependent shops contribute to the fabric of
a community and what makes it special and unique. Tourists and other visitors will be much more inclined to remember a local shop rather than a big chain in a particular neighborhood. When travelers want to get a feel for a commu-nity, they seek out small, local stores that are much more likely to stock a high percentage of locally-sourced goods.Attract other businessesPrivate and public sector businesses tend to gravitate around anchor stores. Should a local store be successful, banks, restaurants, salons, and other businesses may move in as well.Shopping locally benefits consumers in various ways, many of which contribute to a healthy lo-cal economy.

Rodeo a fun event
before and after
competitionRodeo participants put their lives
on the line each time they enter a competition. Drawing thousands upon thousands of spectators eager to watch the awe-inspiring skills of roping and riding various livestock, a rodeo is a series of events that tests competitors in a variety of ways.
It is believed that rodeo arose as a sport out of the necessities of working with cattle herding in areas all around the world, including Spain, Mexico, Canada, Australia, and the United States.
In North America, professional rodeos are established and sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys and Women’s Professional Rodeo Association, while the Australian Bushmen’s Campdraft and Rodeo Association is the largest rodeo organization in Australia.
When thinking of rodeo, it’s easy to envision cowboys atop bucking broncos, and this is a classic rodeo event. However, rodeo also encompasses bull riding, which is one of the sport’s most popular and dangerous events. Bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, ladies barrel racing, and rope and tie are also popular rodeo events.
Warmer weather usually marks the beginning of rodeo season across the United States. Rodeos typically draw large crowds, and they may be held in conjunction with county fairs and other warm-weather events, making for a well-rounded celebration.
When the competition has ended, the attention then typically turns to fun and food, most notably barbecue. For many, barbecue means savory ribs cooked and seasoned with savory sauces. This recipe for “Spicy Pork Ribs” from
Jacqueline Bellefontaine’s “What’s Cooking:Barbeque” (Thunder Bay Press) is a delicious way to prepare and serve barbecued ribs.
Spicy Pork Ribs(Serves 4-6)
2 pounds pork spareribs2/3 cup sieved tomatoes2 tablespoons red wine vinegar2 tablespoons dark muscovado
sugar1 clove garlic, crushed1 teaspoon dried thyme1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary1 teaspoon chili sauce Red chilis, to garnish Mixed salad greens, to serve
1. If you buy the spareribs in a single piece, carefully cut them into individual ribs using a very sharp knife.
2. Bring a large pan of water to a boil and add the pork ribs. Cook the ribs for 10 minutes, then drain them thoroughly. Place the ribs in a large, shallow, nonmetallic dish.
3. To make the spicy sauce, combine the sieved tomatoes, red wine vinegar, sugar, garlic, thyme, rosemary, and chili sauce in a bowl until thoroughly blended.
4. Pour the sauce over the spareribs and toss to coat on all sides. Marinate in the refrigerator for 1 hour.
5. Remove the spareribs from the sauce, repurposing the sauce for basting. Broil the spareribs over hot coals for 5 to 10 minutes, then move them to a cooler part of the barbecue. Cook for a further 15 to 20 minutes, turning and basting with the remaining sauce.
6. Transfer the spareribs to warm serving plates and garnish with the red chilis (if using). Serve with the mixed salad greens.
Chef’s tip: For authentic Southern-style ribs, make sure you buy pork spareribs and not rib chops. Pork spareribs are often sold cut into individual ribs, but it is easy to cut between the ribs with a sharp knife if you cannot find them already seperated.
