The 2012 Sexual Assault Awareness Month campaign encourages communities and individuals
to bring healthy sexuality into the conversation on how we connect, respect and prevent
sexual violence.
The 2012 SAAM campaign "It's time...to talk about it!" provides tools and resources that focus
on promoting positive expressions of sexuality and healthy behaviors. Promoting healthy
behaviors encourages sexual interactions and relationships that are consensual, respectful
and informed. By starting the conversation, this dialogue can build safe, healthy relationships.
Sexual violence affects people of all ages, ethnicities and backgrounds. Nearly 20 percent of the population has experienced some form of sexual assault in their lifetime, according to a report by the U.S. Department of Justice. This April, it’s time to start a dialogue, and the topic of the conversation is healthy sexuality. This year’s SAAM campaign, It’s time … to talk about it, encourages communities and individuals to join the conversation on how we connect and respect one another in order to prevent sexual violence. The 2012 SAAM campaign provides tools and resources that focus on promoting positive expressions of sexuality and healthy behaviors. Promoting healthy behaviors encourages sex‐ual interactions and relationships that are consensual, respectful and informed. The Month of April offers us a special opportunity to acknowledge and honor the service of our littlest heroes, our
military children. Established by Caspar Weinberger, the Month of the Military Child recognizes the important role
military children play in our communities.
There are approximately 1.9 million military children, ranging in ages from newborn to 18 years old, 1.3
million military children are school‐aged.
765,000 of our military children have Active duty parents, and approximately 225,000 have a parent who is
currently deployed.
More than 700,000 children have experienced the deployment of one or more parents since 2001.
Our military children are resilient and proud of their service, and they deserve our support. The Department of
Defense, each of our Armed Services, Cabinet Agencies, the White House Joining Forces Initiative, as well as non‐
profits, businesses and communities throughout the country recognize this and have stepped up to provide a variety
of special programs, initiatives and activities for our military kids.
April brings to mind spring showers making way for May flowers and a universal day of practical jokes, but the month of April is about something much more important, the military child! For the entire month, installations all over the world are filling their calendars with activities celebrating the Month of the Military Child. Here is the JBLM events calendar website to see what’s coming up. http://www.jblmmwr.com/calendar/

Deadline April 16, 2012 The University of Washington School of Nursing and University of Washington Medical Center are excited to be offering UW Nurse Camp 2012 from June 25‐29, 2012. This will be our 4th year of this nursing‐specific day camp program for high school sophomores and juniors. The past 3 years were a tremendous success. Each year, stellar campers spent the week getting introduced to nurses, faculty, students and staff at the UW, along with our community partners. They got CPR training, spent a few days at the UWMC in actual clinical experiences, and spent the week in sessions on workshops geared toward preparing them for what to expect in college. Everyone will be notified of their status no later than May 15, 2012. VISIT: http://nursing.uw.edu/nursecamp

Did you know that you may be able to use your community YMCA free of charge if you do not have access to installation programs and facilities? The Department of Defense is funding memberships and respite care at participating YMCAs throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. So far, over 48,000 military families and individuals have taken advantage of this outstanding benefit. Eligibility: You're eligible to participate in the YMCA Military Outreach Program if you meet one of these criteria: belong to the family of a member of the National Guard or Reserve deployed under Title 10 for at least six months
are an active duty service member assigned to an independent duty location are living away from an installation while your active duty spouse is deployed for at least six months are assigned to a community‐based Wounded Transition Unit
Memberships: With free YMCA membership, an eligible military family can participate in all of the programs offered by the YMCA in their community, including sports and recreation, health and fitness programs, and learning opportunities for youth and adults. There are currently over 1,400 community YMCAs participating in the military outreach program. Respite care: When their spouses are deployed, military parents on the home front sometimes need to have some much‐deserved time for themselves. The military outreach initiative includes respite child care in a safe and caring environment for up to sixteen hours per month, per child at no cost to the parent. This gives you the opportunity to go shopping, run errands, or just relax and take care of yourself for a little while. Respite care is available only from participating YMCAs with a licensed child care program. To learn more about the YMCA Military Outreach Initiative, you can visit the website or contact Military OneSource at (800) 342‐9647 to confirm your eligibility and for help locating a participating YMCA near you.
