The California Public Health Act of 2006 On July 1, 2007, the Department of Health Services was
reorganized into two separate departments OMH is a policy office located in the California Department of
Public Health (CDPH) with duties and responsibilities in both CDPH and the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS)

Provide both Departments with expert advice on health related needs and issues of the state’s diverse communities
Assist in evaluating programs in each Department to ensure that health disparities are addressed

Cultural Competency On-line training modules to increase awareness and
understanding of the cultural and legal context of serving Native American communities within Medicaid and public health programs Improve capacity to efficiently manage health services
aimed at this population Improve relationships between the public health
community and tribal nations Improve health outcomes for Native Americans.
Cultural competency curriculum and toolkit based on the Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services Standards for government and institutional use.
Key Projects and InitiativesObesity Prevention In California for 2007, African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, and
Native Hawaiians and Other Pacific Islanders had the highest rates of obesity.
Physicians have the greater influence in changing the behaviors. Collaboration with the California Medical Association Foundation to strengthen the capacity of healthcare providers to address overweight and obesity in clinical practice.
Obesity screening/counseling covered preventive services for children under Affordable Care Act in addition Medi-Cal Managed Care adopting new HEDIS measure on childhood obesity.
California has largest Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander population in the continental United States.
Combined overweight/obesity prevalence rate of 74% for Pacific Islander children in San Mateo County ages 5 to 19.
Collaboration to adapt CHDP curriculum for obesity to be culturally appropriate for Pacific Islander teens.
Disseminate statewide to CHDP providers as culturally appropriate obesity prevention tool for Pacific Islander adolescents.

Information Dissemination California government website entitled California Health
Information, Resources and Publications at CHIRP.ca.gov. Help users access quality, multilingual health information,
resources and publications in electronic and print formats developed by CDPH, DHCS, and other departments under the California Health and Human Services Agency.
Allow users to search for trusted materials developed by State, Federal, and other Local health agencies.
Feature quick access to current health news, health policies and data, and provide a health directory to locate health organizations, centers, providers, and services.

Data and Research Developing a series of reports focused on racial and
ethnic health disparities in California.
