Drivers
Challenge: A world leading supplier of industrial, process, and specialty gases sought to improve its process
for hiring Drivers. The company determined that using personality assessments within the
selection process may improve the quality of applicants hired for this role. Drivers are
responsible for delivering industrial and medical gases to clients and patients as well as selling
products.
Solution: The company contacted Hogan to help validate the Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI), a measure
of everyday personality characteristics predictive of job performance. First, Hogan conducted
focus groups with Driver incumbents and supervisors to gather qualitative information. Next,
subject matter experts (SMEs) completed the Job Evaluation Tool (JET), a personality-based job
analysis questionnaire, to gather information about what personality characteristics and
competencies were essential for performance. Finally, Hogan leveraged archival research
methods to identify which HPI scales were most predictive of successful Driver performance.
Result: Based on the research results, Hogan recommended a profile to select high performing Drivers.
The profile screens in applicants who are even-tempered and remain calm under pressure
(higher Adjustment), persistent and goal-oriented (higher Ambition), perceptive and tactful
(higher Interpersonal Sensitivity), and rule-abiding and conscientious (higher Prudence).
By implementing this profile into their selection process, the company will hire applicants who
possess the characteristics predictive of success in the Driver job.
