MHADAplans to build houses on 400
plots instead of selling them Considering the skyrocketing realty
prices in the state, Konkan Board of
the Maharashtra Housing and Area
Development Authority (MHADA)
has decided to construct affordable
housing projects on 400 plots located
in Thane, Ambarnath, Raigad,
Konkan and Sindhudurg, rather than
selling them through its lottery sys-
tem. Konkan Board Chief Officer Dr
Bhausaheb Dangade said, “Earlier, we
had plans to sell the 400 plots, but
now we have decided to construct af-
fordable housing projects on them.
This will help MHADA generate more
revenue and provide affordable hous-
ing to people.” Another official
claimed the housing body has plots
on prime locations in the above-men-
tioned areas.

Arunachal is "integral and im-
portant part" of India: PranabOn one of the rare Presidential visits to this part of the country,
incumbent Pranab Mukherjee on Friday asserted that Arunachal
Pradesh is an integral and important part of the Northeast region of
India and a core stake holder in country's 'Look East' foreign policy.
In comments that will be read with interest in Beijing, which lays
claim over parts of the state, he said no longer should this region be
considered remote. "The Centre and the state government should
together rapidly build the infrastructure linkages and connectivity
with the rest of India that is required and this legislature and the people
of Arunachal should extend every assistance possible to this venture,"
he said in his address to Arunachal Pradesh assembly. China, which has
raised disputes regarding India's sovereignty over Arunachal Pradesh,
has of late upped the ante by issuing stapled visas to residents of the
state in a bid to buttress its claim. But the visits by Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh some years ago and the President now are seen as an
attempt by India to send a clear message to China that India has an
unassailable sovereignty over the state.
Centre to frame guidelines
to regulate TV contentsThe Supreme Court asked three central ministries and others
including Press Council of India (PCI) to respond to a PIL seeking
framing of guidelines to regulate contents of television channels.
A bench of Chief Justice P Sathasivam and Justice Ranjan Gogoi
on Friday issued notices to ministries of Information and Broad-
casting, Law and Justice and Communications & Information Tech-
nology. Besides them, PCI, Election Commission, News Broadcast-
ers Association, Indian Broadcasting Foundation and Advertising
Standards Council of India have also been asked to respond to the
PIL which has been filed by Hindu Janjagruti Samiti, a registered
public charitable trust, through its Mumbai-based lawyer Rajeev K
Panday. The plea also said the court should declare that a 2008
government order will not preclude an authorised officer under the
Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act from initiating criminal
prosecution against a channel in case of violation of provisions of
the Act. It alleged that there is "complete absence" of regulatory
authority for TV Channels. The petition raises a substantial ques-
tion of public importance and public interest relating to the neces-
sity of an effective regulation of electronic media in matters involv-
ing public morality, public decorum, social tranquillity and public
order "There is no regulatory body for TV channels which is com-
parable with Press Council of India that regulates the print media.
Though TV channels are audio-visual media, there is no censor-
ship on their contents. In other words, a film that cannot be re-
leased without censor certificate can straightaway be released on a
TV channel," the PIL said. The PIL said the so-called self-regula-
tion by electronic media has proved to be "completely ineffective"
as the "self-regulating bodies" are private companies and are un-
der control of the media houses. "The private bodies have a limited
power of imposing fine upto Rs one lakh which goes into their
own kitty. There is no compensation to victim of media abuse.
There is also no control of government over these bodies. These
bodies are not accountable to people as they are not organs of
the state," it said. The law relating to emergency blocking of
objectionable website without prior notice as contained in the
Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for block-
ing for access of information by public) Rules, 2009 is much
more rigorous as compared to TV channels for which there is no
law for emergency blocking. hough objectionable programme
on TV channel can do more harm than an objectionable website,
there is no rigorous law to curb objectionable content of a TV
channel. The belated action on behalf of the Government au-
thorities against erring channels shows that the non-serious
attitude of the Centre. "...the Central Government is also non-
serious about exercising its powers with reference to control-
ling channels by suspension and revocation of license. This
has emboldened the channels to violate the programme code in
a blatant manner and has given rise to malpractices such as
'Paid News' "Extortion by blackmail", "Character Assassination
for TRP" and so on," it said.
Food preservation byradiation processing
Food is vital for human
existence. Conservation and
preservation of food is essen-
tial for food security and it
provides economic stability
and self-reliance to a nation.
The need to preserve food
has been felt by mankind
since time immemorial. The
seasonal nature of production,
long distances between pro-
duction and consumption cen-
tres and rising gap between
demand and supply have
made this need even more
relevant today. The hot and
humid climate of a country
like India is quite favourable
for growth of numerous in-
sects and microorganisms
that destroy stored crops and
cause spoilage of food every
year. Spoilage can also occur
due to chemical and physi-
ological changes in stored
foods. Sea-foods, meat and
poultry may carry harmful
microbes and parasitic or-
ganisms that cause illnesses
associated with their con-
sumption. As in other parts of
the world, India has also
practiced various methods of
food preservation such as
sun drying, pickling and fer-
mentation which were
supplemented with more en-
ergy consuming techniques
such as refrigeration, freez-
ing and canning. Each of
these methods has its merits
and limitations. Man has al-
ways been in the search for
newer methods to preserve
foods with least change in
sensory qualities. Radiation
processing of food is one of
the latest methods developed
for this purpose. Food Tech-
nology Division (FTD) of the
Bhabha Atomic Research
Centre (BARC) is involved in
the research on food preser-
vation through radiation.
Radiation processing of
food involves exposure of
food to short wave radiation
energy to achieve a specific
purpose such as extension of
shelf-life, insect
disinfestations and elimination
of food borne pathogens and
parasites. In comparison with
heat or chemical treatment,
irradiation is considered a
more effective and appropri-
ate technology to destroy
food borne pathogens. It of-
fers a number of advantages
to producers, processors, re-
tailers and consumers.
Though irradiation alone can-
not solve all the problems of
food preservation, it can play
an important role in reducing
post-harvest losses and use
of chemical fumigants.
Expertise and know-how
for designing, fabrication and
commissioning of irradiators
is available in the country
with the Department of
Atomic Energy (DAE) and
BARC. In India commercial
food irradiation could be car-
ried out in a facility licensed
by the Atomic Energy Regu-
latory Board (AERB). The
DAE has set up two tech-
nology demonstration units in
India. The Radiation Pro-
cessing Plant at Vashi, Navi
Mumbai, mainly meant for
treatment of spices, dry veg-
etable seasonings like onion
flakes, and pet foods, is be-
ing operated by the Board of
Radiation & Isotope Tech-
nology (BRIT). KRUSHAK
(Krushi Utpadan
Sanrakshan Kendra),
Lasalgaon, was set up in
2002 by BARC, to demon-
strate low dose applications
of radiation such as control
of sprouting, insect
disinfestations, and quaran-
tine treatment. KRUSHAK
became the first Cobalt-60
gamma irradiation facility in
the world, outside US, to be
certified by USDA-APHIS
for phytosanitary treatment
enabling export of mango
from India to the US in 2007
after a gap of 18 years. The
microbiological, nutritional
and chemical aspects of ra-
diation-processed foods
have been studied in detail
around the world. None of
these studies have indicated
any adverse effects of radia-
tion on food quality.

Man reportedly electrocuted while using
iPhone 4S with third-party chargerMumbai (AU News network) :In a rare but
not entirely unprecedented incident, a man inThailand was reportedly declared dead after beingelectrocuted while using his Apple iPhone 4S whenit was charging. It's worthpointing out that thecharger was found to bethird-party one, and not theoriginal Apple-suppliedcharger.
The 28-year old manfrom Chanthaburi provincewas found dead in hisroom with burn marksacross the body and hand. The report claims that theman was holding hisiPhone 4S at the time ofdeath and that the smartphone was hooked to apower outlet.
While the exact cause of death has not beenascertained, the report speculates that the manmight have been talking on the smartphone whilecharging it, and that the charger could haveoverheated resulting in the electrocution.
In a similar incident, a Chinese woman waskilled by an electric shock when answering a callon her iPhone 5 while it was charging in July thisyear. Soon after, Apple announced a probe looking
into the death of the woman. Previously, anApple iPhone 5 even exploded during phonecall in Thailand.
To counter such incidents involving
unauthorised after-market accessories,Apple had in August announced a trade-inprogram for third-party chargers, wherepeople with counterfeit or third-party poweradaptors could swap them for certified Applemodels for the local equivalent of $10.
Samsung has not been far from suchincidents as well, as the company's 2013flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S4reportedly exploded and burned down ahouse in Hong Kong.

'Bullett Raja' review: Saif AliKhan dazzles in this Dhulia flickAs a
Sometimes you are left
wondering why the poten-
tial of a star is not used to
its full extent more often.
Tigmanshu Dhulia’s
‘Bullett Raja' is a good ex-
ample of what Saif Ali Khan
is actually capable of, re-
minding you of ‘Langda
Tyagi’ from ‘Omkara’. Yet
it is not a repeat of the old
act. This rustic act of Saif
Ali Khan makes you want
more. Saif plays Raja
Mishra, a trigger happy
small town boy who turns
into a fully fledged gang-
ster as he gets entangled
in a shootout. The story
then plots his and his friend
Rudra’s (played by Jimmy
Shergill) journey in the poli-
tics and violence of Uttar
Pradesh. Raja and Rudra
then make their way up into
main stream politics while
playing henchmen for the
leading opposition party
leader. The movie is action
packed and the director
does not try and keep it un-
derstated to attract crowds.
He does not try to pull off
‘Dabangg’ style stunts ei-
ther. The hair raising action
sequences are fantastically
paced and the wit and
humour used to set off the
scenes remind you why
Dhulia is a genius. The
characters of Raja and
Rudra make compelling anti
heroes. They are loyal, ro-
mantic, witty, macho,
strong and exude panache
in every move. The movie
has an great cast ensemble.
Gulshan Grover and Raj
Babbar in negative charac-
ters make you nostalgic for
their performances in the
90s. Even Chunky Pandey,
who plays a negative
cameo in the first half is re-
ally commendable. Jimmy
as usual makes you think
why he is so underused in
Bollywood and why more
directors don’t take him on
board. He seems to be one
of Tigmanshu’s favourite
actors – with a splendid per-
formance in this movie, the
director is not far off the
mark. Sonakshi Sinha plays
her 'typical' Bollywood
heroine role, and does not
have much to contribute.
Even the romantic angle
given to the movie is waste-
ful. Ravi Kishen plays a
character with a lot of po-
tential in the movie and
could have been utilised
better. A special mention
should go to Vidyut
Jamwal. If after Akshay
Kumar there is dearth of a
true action hero in
Bollywood; Vidyut is the
answer. Even though he
comes onscreen only for
the last 45 minutes or so,
he delivers a power packed
performance and the jaw
dropping stunts which he
has choreographed and ex-
ecuted himself are breath
taking. Added to this his
good looks and a well toned
body would ensure his fe-
male fan following only
growing with more projects.
The movie is all about
the refreshingly original
screenplay and the tight
direction. The dialogues
(written by Tigmanshu him-
self) are crisp and witty and
don’t fizzle out at any part
of the movie. They are not
over done either. Some of
them got wolf whistles as
the audience cheered the
actors for some more.
“Brahman bhukha toh
Sudama, samjha toh
Chanakya aor rutha toh
Ravaan.” (When a Brahmin
is hungry, he is Sudama;
when he understands, he is
Chanakya; and when an-
gry, he is Raavan)
“Uttar Pradesh ki
raajneeti me koi khas nahi
hota, jo jaan deta hai wahi
khaas hota hai.” (In the poli-
tics of Uttar Pradesh, no-
body is a favourite. The one
who can give his life for
you is the favourite.) With
all the pluses in the movie
however, the songs in the
movie are disappointing.
Sajid-Wajid have provided
a good background score
with a true Hollywood
western style mouth organ
playing at the pauses and
the intense parts of the
movie. But, the songs are
badly placed. ‘Dont touch
me’ and ‘Tamanche pe
disco’ make you think why
the director needed to put
these tracks at all when he
could have easily done
without them. Dhulia’s
biggest mass entertainer
venture yet, ‘Bullett Raja’
is not your usual gravity
defying stunt filled motion
picture that asks you to
leave your brains behind.
The twists and turns in
the plot keep you rooted
to the seats for the entire
movie. They might be
somewhat predictable but
are not stretched and
don’t underestimate the
intelligence of the viewer.
The movie is a must watch
for anyone who loves hard
core action. It is not as in-
tense as Dhulia’s previous
ventures were, but ‘Bullett
Raja’ will surely not let you
down.

Kareena Kapoor reinvented in 'Bombay Samurai'Actress Kareena
Kapoor`s career seems

exciting new level with
Dev Benegal`s film
‘Bombay Samurai’.
Post-marriage, she

hearted crusader`s role in
Prakash Jha`s
‘Satyagraha’ and the
totally inane social
activist`s role in ‘Gori Tere

‘Bombay Samurai’,
Kareena finally seems to
have got her post-
marriage formula right.
According to

roller coaster ride with
amazing twists and
turns. There are seven to
eight pivotal characters.
But Kareena and Farhan

show".

like no other seen before

wacky and unpredictable.
The two actors will have a
ball playing their outgoing
zestful characters," the
source added.
Both Kareena and
Farhan were keen to work
with one another.
Says Farhan: "I`ve
seen Kareena`s work.
She is consistently
excellent. I was keen to
work with her. Dev`s film
gives us a chance to try
something different."

Being a GUESS girl is big deal for me: Priyanka Chopra Priyanka Chopra is the
first Bollywood actress to be-
come the face of global fashion

considers it a big deal.

a GUESS store where she was
unveiled as the new GUESS
girl. "When I went to New York
this time, to pick up the maga-
zines and saw Julia Roberts in
the front and myself on the
back, I was like `woah`," she
added. International singer
Bryan Adams shot Priyanka
for the campaign and she re-
veals "When they first told me
that Bryan was shooting it, I
thought there must be some
other person by the same
name." "I couldn`t think that
somebody is so talented to be
a singer and a photographer.
But then I found out that he
has done a lot of campaigns for
GUESS. They showed me the
pictures of one of their most
recent campaigns. And Bryan
knew of me and I knew of
Bryan. He comes to India so
often that he is now half In-
dian," Priyanka said. Priyanka,
who went international with
her singing talent by launching
her first single ‘In my city’,
had released her second single
‘Exotic’ a few months back.
She is now working on her
third song. On the Bollywood
front, she will soon be seen in

Justice AK Ganguly
New Delhi (AU News

has revealed that the former judge
accused of sexually harassing an
intern in December is AK
Ganguly. "I am totally innocent,"
he said, " I have worked with
several interns in my life... a large
number of them... I treat them like
my children."
The former judge has testified
for three serving Supreme Court
judges who are investigating the
charges. So has the young
woman lawyer who complained

month, without naming him. She
said he harassed her in a hotel
room in December.
Justice Ganguly was on the

Kanchi seers acquittedin Sankararaman case
wwwwwThe Kanchi Sankaracharyas, Jayendra Saraswathi
and Vijayendra Saraswathi, come out of the
Puducherry Sessions Court, which freed them in the
Sankararaman murder case, on Wednesday.
(AU News network) :The Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri
Jayendra Saraswathi, and the junior Acharya, Sri
Vijayendra Saraswathi, were acquitted by a Sessions
Court here on Wednesday in the Sankararaman murder
case, bringing an eight-year trial to a close.
The court also acquitted 22 other accused, including
one who had died during the trial.
In the nearly 250-page judgment, Principal District
Sessions Judge C.S. Murugan said the September
3, 2004 murder of A. Sankararaman, manager of
the Sri Varadarajaperumal temple at
Kancheepuram, had not been proved because
more than 20 prosecution witnesses turned hostile.
Further, the witnesses who identified the accused
in a parade failed to do so before the court.
The court also referred to a Supreme Court
observation - in the order granting bail to Sri
Jayendra Saraswathi - that Prem Kumar, then
Superintendent of Police, Kancheepuram (since
deceased), had taken an undue interest and active
participation in the investigation, beyond what
was required under the law. This was proved by
witnesses. What with his intervention, a fair and
proper probe was not done by the Chief
Investigating Officer.
The accused included N. Sundaresan, who was
manager of the Sankara Mutt; the junior pontiff's
brother M.K. Raghu; and K.G. Krishnasamy alias
Appu. The trial was shifted to Puducherry from
Tamil Nadu in 2005.

26 reasons why CBI court sentenced Talwars in Aarushi case
Ghaziabad (AU NEWSNETWORK) : Of course there isno direct evidence but CBI hasplaced a "clinching wealth ofcircumstances" from which theguilt of Rajesh Talwar and his wifeNupur has been made out formurdering their daughter Aarushiand domestic help Hemraj, JudgeShyam Lal said while outlining 26reasons for sentencing the coupleto rigorous life imprisonment.
"From the evidence astendered by the prosecution inform of oral and documentaryevidence this court reaches to theirresistible and impeccableconclusion that only the accusedpersons are responsible forcommitting this ghastly crime asthe following circumstancesunerringly point towards thehypothesis of guilt of theaccused," the 210-page order said, while pointing out 26circumstances leading to theconviction.
1. That irrefragably on thefateful night of May 15 and 16,2008 both the accused were lastseen with both the deceased in FlatNo. L-32, Jalvayu Vihar at about9.30 pm by Umesh Sharma, thedriver of Rajesh Talwar;
2. That on the morning of May16, 2008 at about 6.00 A.M.Aarushi was found murdered inher bed-room which was adjacent
to the bedroom of the accused andthere was only partition wallbetween two bed-rooms;
3. That the dead body of theservant Hemraj was found lyingin the pool of blood on the terraceof flat no. L-32, Jalvayu Vihar onMay 17, 2008 and the door ofterrace was found locked frominside;
4. That there is a closeproximity between the point of timewhen both the accused and thedeceased persons were last seentogether alive and the deceasedwere murdered in the interveningnight of May 15 and 16, 2008 andas such the time is so small thatpossibility of any other person(s)other than the accused being theauthors of the crime becomesimpossible;
5. That the door of Aarushi'sbed-room was fitted withautomatic click-shut lock. MaheshKumar Mishra, the then S.P. (City),NOIDA has deposed that when hetalked to Rajesh Talwar on May16, 2008 in the morning, he had toldhim that in the preceding night atabout 11.30 P.M. He had gone tosleep with the key after locking thedoor of Aarushi's bed-room fromoutside. Both the accused haveadmitted that door of Aarushi'sbed-room was having automatic-clickshut lock like that of a hotel, which could not be opened from
outside without key but could beopened from inside without key.No explanation has been offeredby the accused as to how the lockof Aarushi's room was opened andby whom.
6. That the internet remainedactive in the night of the goryincident suggesting that at leastone of the accused remainedawake;
7. That there is nothing toshow that an outsider(s) cameinside the house in the said nightafter 9.30 P.M.;
8. That there was no disruptionin the supply of electricity in thatnight;
9. That no person was seenloitering near the flats insuspicious circumstances duringthat night;
10. That there is no evidenceof forcible entry of any outsider(s)in the flat in the night ofoccurrence;
11. That there is no evidenceof any larcenous act in the flat;
12. That in the morning of May16, 2008 when the maid came tothe flat for the purpose of cleaningand mopping, a false pretext wasmade by Nupur Talwar that doormight have been locked fromoutside by the servant Hemrajalthough it was not locked orlatched from outside;
13. That the house maid BhartiMandal has nowhere stated thatwhen she came inside the flat boththe accused were found weeping;
14. That from the testimony ofBharti Mandal it is manifestly clearthat when she reached the flat andtalked to Nupur Talwar then at thattime she had not complained aboutthe murder of her daughter andrather she told the maid deliberatelythat Hemraj might have gone tofetch milk from Mother dairy afterlocking the wooden door fromoutside. This lack of spontaneityis relevant under section 8 of theEvidence Act;
15. That the clothes of boththe accused were not foundsoaked with blood. It is highlyunnatural that parents ofdeceased Aarushi will not cling to
and hug her on seeing hermurdered;
16. That no outsider(s) will dareto take Hemraj to the terrace inseverely injured condition andthereafter search out a lock to beplaced in the door of the terrace;
17. That it is not possible thatan outsider(s) after committing themurders will muster courage to takeScotch whisky knowing that theparents of the deceased Aarushi arein the nearby room and his toppriority will be to run away from thecrime scene immediately.
18. That no outsider(s) willbother to take the body of Hemraj tothe terrace. Moreover, a singleperson cannot take the body to theterrace;
19. That the door of the terracewas never locked prior to theoccurrence but it was found lockedin the morning of May 16, 2008 andthe accused did not give the key ofthe lock to the police despite beingasked to give the same;
20. That the accused have takenplea in the statements under section313 Cr.P.C. That about 8-10 daysbefore the occurrence painting ofcluster had started and the navviesused to take water from water tankplaced on the terrace of the flat andthen Hemraj had started locking thedoor of the terrace and the key ofthat lock remained with him. If it wasso then it was not easily possiblefor an outsider to find out the key ofthe lock of terrace door;
21. That if an outsider(s) mayhave committed the crime in questionafter locking the door of terrace andhad gone out of the flat then theouter most mesh door or middlemesh door must have been foundlatched from outside;
22. That the motive ofcommission of the crime has beenestablished;
23. That it is not possible thatafter commission of the crime anoutsider(s) will dress-up the crimescene;
24. That golf-club no.5 wasthrown in the loft after commissionof the crime and the same wasproduced after many months by theaccused Rajesh Talwar;
25. That pattern of head andneck injuries of both the accusedpersons are almost similar in natureand can be caused by golf-club andscalpel respectively;
26.That the accused RajeshTalwar was a member of the Golf-Club NOIDA and golfclubs wereproduced by him before the CBI andscalpel is used by the dentists andboth the accused are dentists byprofession; "The manner in whichthe murders were committed is notthe handiwork of single accusedand rather the murders werecommitted and evidence destroyedby both the accused in furtheranceof their common intention which isapparent from the facts andcircumstances" mentioned, thejudge said.

Dissidence won't be brooked, says Uddhav; Joshi apologisesMumbai: Showing that he was in full control of
the party, Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray
on Friday said that dissidents
were free to leave; while senior
party leader Manohar Joshi, who
had criticised his leadership
style recently, apologised.
"Those who don't like my
leadership, they are free to join
other parties. The doors are
open. I will not ask them to stay,"
Uddhav said, talking to reporters
after a meeting of Sena leaders which was attended
by Joshi and Mohan Rawale, another leader who
took potshots at Uddhav recently. Uddhav, who
was anointed president of the party after the death
of his father, Bal Thackeray, also expressed
confidence that he would "fly the (Sena's) saffron
flag atop the state Legislature on the strength of
loyal cadres".
"I met the party president today and made it
clear...Uddhav Thackeray's leadership is strong. If
my statements have unwittingly disrespected the party
president, I publicly apologise
for the same as party's
discipline requires it, and hope
that the issue would now close
finally," Joshi said in a
statement this evening. Joshi,
former Speaker of Lok Sabha
and former Maharashtra Chief
Minister, had publicly
criticised Uddhav last month.
He was later booed out by party workers from the dais
during the party's annual Dusshera rally. Rawale, who
was elected five times to the Lok Sabha from Mumbai
south-central constituency and considered a Bal
Thackeray loyalist, created a flutter in political circles a
few days go when he met MNS chief Raj Thackeray at
latter's residence earlier this month. Rawale was
reportedly disgruntled as he was unlikely to get the
ticket from Shiv Sena this time.
