The Scottish Government's Climate Challenge Fund (CCF) was
launched in 2008 and over 1,150 projects across all 32 local
authorities have been awarded CCF grants. Total CCF funding
since 2008 exceeds £111 million.
The CCF supports community-led organisations in Scotland to
tackle climate change by running projects that reduce local carbon
emissions.
Previously funded projects have helped communities to reduce
their reliance on car travel, cut waste, grow local food and lower
energy use in homes and community buildings.

2. Communications during
Covid-19
www.keepscotlandbeautiful.org/ccf www.facebook.com/ClimateChallengeFund www.twitter.com/CCFScot
General tips on climate change communication during Covid-19
Examples of effective communications:
• Promoting activities tackling climate change and Covid-19 - e.g. Bike for Good with
bikes for keyworkers and CCF projects upcycling equipment for the NHS
• Promoting activities supporting the local community and tackling climate change -
e.g. Gate Church Carbon Saving Project’s Community Fridge
• Sharing positive news stories - Could improvements in air quality be permanent with
more home working, increased active travel and better public transport post-Covid?
• Promote things people can do - e.g. sharing of online courses accessible from home
Climate Outreach have a webinar and guide on communicating climate change during the
Covid-19 crisis available here.
It’s always important to be sensitive in communications and take into account
what is happening in the world. The same goes for promotion during Covid-19.

Your message and ask
Your message:
• Who are you?
• What you are doing?
• When, where and why?
Your ask:
• What do you want people to do?

Top tips
Refer to your CCF application if you
require clarification on any points
relating to you project activities.
If your project activities are being
delivering differently during Covid-19
remember to include that in your
message and ask.
It’s important to establish a message and ask as soon as possible and review
it regularly.
www.keepscotlandbeautiful.org/ccf www.facebook.com/ClimateChallengeFund www.twitter.com/CCFScot
Create your own elevator pitch:
• Use the ‘Elevator Pitch’ template to clarify message and ask for your project
• You can develop different pitches according to the audience and time you have
available
• The template is also useful for developing written copy summarising your project
The Elevator Pitch activity is available for download via the CCF website.

Creating an online presence
The below list gives some ideas of some popular starting points:
• Website – a hosting point for news, resources & events
• Facebook – a platform to host and share news, views and events
• Twitter – share your news; 140 character limit
• Audioboom – record and host your audio clips
• Youtube & Vimeo – a home for your videos
Top tips

and ensure you have time to update information regularly.
There are hundreds of online platforms to choose from so it can be daunting.
www.keepscotlandbeautiful.org/ccf www.facebook.com/ClimateChallengeFund www.twitter.com/CCFScot
Creating print
Remember to include your message and ask:
• Who are you?
• What you are doing?
• When, where and why?
• What do you want people to do?
• How can they become involved?
Top tips
If you think Covid-19 might impact your future
activities remember to include a plan B on your print.
Printed literature can be an effective route to promote your project, so plan
ahead to ensure that it covers future eventualities.
www.keepscotlandbeautiful.org/ccf www.facebook.com/ClimateChallengeFund www.twitter.com/CCFScot
Sustainable print
There’s lots to consider whether using a commercial printing
company of printing in-house:
• Paper – recycled, FSC
• Ink – vegetable with non-chlorinated process
• Carbon – think about carbon neutral print
• Travel – where was the paper made?
• Printer – where is your printer? Are they ISO accredited?
Always include information on your documents to let people
know how and why your print is sustainable.
Printed on 100% post consumer waste using a non-chlorinated process.
The carbon emissions generated by printing will be offset by planting broadleaved trees in a local community woodland
Making your print more sustainable should be a priority for your CCF project.

your message and ask
• Ease of access – will it work well on a mobile?
• Traffic to your website – this will drive more traffic, so share links to your webpages often

Video
• Use longer films on your website and have
shorter clips for social media
• Video is becoming an important method of
communication during Covid-19
Top tips

Noticeboards and flyers
Places for flyers:
• Community Council
• Local shop / Post Office
• Leisure centre
• Library
Local projects noticeboards can be effective in reaching your audience.
Top tips

about where to find information on your activities during
Covid-19. Also, think about using online noticeboards as
alternatives to physical options.
www.keepscotlandbeautiful.org/ccf www.facebook.com/ClimateChallengeFund www.twitter.com/CCFScot
Newsletters
Some things to think about for your newsletter:
• Create online through Mailchimp or similar, and include a signup
option on your website that you also highlight through other channels
• Include asks, upcoming events and partner news
Top tips
During Covid-19 think about asking people who join your online activities if
they would be interested in signing up for your newsletter, or for specific
workshops, so you have the potential for full workshops post-lockdown.
A regular newsletter can be an excellent way of keeping your community
informed about your project and building your audience.

to have many different
journey options available
that match current
guidelines.
Create a plan for your participants:
Create a plan for your CCF project participants that includes
clear routes of participation.
Remember that their will be different journeys. For example, a
person who signs up to receive a home energy advice visit will
have different expectations to someone who registers to
volunteer.
The ‘Participant Journey’ activity is available on the CCF
website at www.keepscotlandbeautiful.org/ccfbranding
It’s important to plan so that everyone who wants to become involved with
your project has a positive experience and knows what to expect.
