    Firstletmesaythattheseareguidelines,notrulesofthethoushaltnotkillcategory.

    Thatdoesnotmakethoseblockbustermoviesgreatjustbecausetheycontainthe8plotpoints.Limitingyourscreenplaystorytojustthese8plotpointsmakesyourstorybecometoopredictableandreducesmanypossibilitiesofitbecomingpotentiallyinnovative,unique,andoriginal,whichisoneofthemaingoalstowritingagoodscript.Toomanyoftheseblockbustermoviesaretoopredictableandlackagreatcompellingstory,becausetheydependtoomuchonthe8plotpointsbyrevolvingthestoryaroundtheplotpoints,insteadoftheotherwayaround,makingthestorybecomebland,typical,weak,andboring.Attheendofthemovie,yougohomefeelinguncompelled,unemotional,unmoved,andunsatisfied,allbecausethescreenplaypaidmoreattentiontomechanicalstructurethanacompellingandartisticallycreativestory,wheremostofitsattentionshouldhavebeen.

    1)Reallifecanbehopelessenough.Peoplegotothemoviesinparttoescapethatfeeling.Youmightwanttoreconsideracompletelybleakendingjustformarketabilityssake.Ifyourherofails,thepossibilityofahopefulendingshouldexistforanothercharacter(howeverminor).

    ToquoteSydFieldfromhisbookScreenplay,IoncetaughtaworkshopinGermanyforsome50writers,andoutof50stories,46ofthemendedindeath,suicide,mayhem,anddestruction.Itoldthestudentsthattherearebetterwaystoendascreenplaythantohaveyourcharactercaught,shot,captured,die,commitsuicide,orbekilled.

    IthinkthislistisaGREAThelp.AnyonewhohasdoneanythingknowsthatyouALWAYSwanttostartoffwithdirection,especiallyifyourenewtoit.Tojustwingitisalmostneveragoodidea.Justlikemanyothers,Iunderstandthatthesearejustsomegoodguidelinestobeginwithandofcourse,thebetterweget,themorewemaybeabletodeviateappropriately.SomefolksturnsomethinglikethisintoanEnglishprojectandthatswhyitdrivesthemcrazy,butwhattheyneedtounderstandisthatthisisjustsoyoucanhavesomestructureandknowwheretobegin.Thisalsoallowsyoutobreakthescriptdownandfocusmoreondoingmaybe30pagesatatimeratherthantryingtofigureall120outinonesittingorgettoonespotandjustbestuckbecauseyouhavenoideawheretogonext.
