• HOMEWORK: Methods of Separating Mixtures
• First: Read Chapter 3 sections 3 and 4 (Mixtures of Matter and Elements and Compounds).
• Second: Read this file.• Third: Exemplify the use of methods of
separating mixtures in: recycling processes, purification of water, air and solids. Before writing your examples, do research and cite your sources.

METHODS OF SEPARATING MIXTURES
August 21st, 2011
Methods of separating mixtures
• Filtration• Decantation• Distillation• Paper chromatography• Centrifugation• Magnetization
Filtration
• Separates a solid from a fluid (liquid or gas)• Uses a porous barrier: filter paper• Use gravity or gravity enhanced by a vacuum.
Decantation
• Used to separate immiscible liquids• Done by carefully pouring one of the
solutions into another container• Used to separate insoluble solids
Distillation
• Mostly used for homogeneous mixtures• Separates substances by their boiling points• Condense the gas into a liquid and collect
Paper Chromatography
• Composed of a mobile phase and a stationary phase• Mobile phase: usually a gas or a liquid that
travels through the stationary phase• Stationary phase: chromatography paper
Centrifugation
• Uses the centrifugal force in order to sediment compounds in a mixture.
