SEEDS (Sustainable Energy Educa-tion & Development Support) ofNortheastern PA will hold a work-
shop on High Performance, Passiveand Zero Net Energy Homes on Tues-day July 15 at 7 p.m. at the Park StreetComplex, located near Wayne Memori-al Hospital, off Rt 6, at 648 Park Street,Honesdale, PA.
Everyone wants to save money andenergy, especially if you’re thinking ofbuilding a new house or for any majorrenovation. This public presentationwill address how to design, model andconstruct high performance, super-insulated homes, even to the point ofhaving the building be zero Net Energy,i.e. where all the annual energy it usesis less than the energy generated.
Rob Lewis and Jack Barnett will leadthe discussion, which will includesuper-insulated wall designs for airtight envelopes, passive gains for light-ing, heating and cooling, householdsystems and appliances for energyconservation and modeling the wholebuilding’s energy usage to properly size
an energy generation system, such assolar photovoltaic.
Rob Lewis lives in Shavertown, PA andis a principal with Bakker & LewisArchitects. Jack Barnett is a SEEDSboard member, interim board presidentof the newly formed Clean EnergyCooperative Inc. for Wayne and Pike
counties, and owner of a “nearly” zeroNet Energy solar home near Hawley, PA.Rob has been personally and profes-sionally interested in high performancebuildings since 1980. He and his part-ner, Margaret Bakker, designed Jack’shouse, which was completed in 2008.
“We want to keep people informed
about the latest developments in homebuilding methods for maximum ener-gy efficiency,” said SEEDS ExecutiveDirector Jocelyn Cramer. “This forumwill be highly useful to those in thebuilding trades, and anyone interestedin renovations to their present home orconsidering new construction.”
SEEDS, is a non-profit organizationdedicated to promoting sustainableenergy and living in Northeast Pa. For afull list of its forums and other pro-grams, visit www.seedsgroup.net, orcontact their office on 570-245-1256,or upstairs at the Cooperage, 1030Main Street, Honesdale.

C reate a backyard escape with thehelp of container gardens.Whether you’re looking for a visit
to the desert, an English garden or tropi-cal paradise, a few planters can help cre-ate the mood.
Reduce your workload and increaseyour enjoyment with a bit of planningand proper planting.
Select a container with drainage holesand one that mimics the color and feelof the location you are trying to recreate.Use troughs, stone or other containersmade from neutral colors when growingsucculents. The container should com-plement, but not overpower the simplebeauty of the desert plants.
Keep things warm and natural whengoing for a more tropical feel. Wicker, bamboo and other natural materialswork well with the lush foliage andvibrant colors of tropical plants.
Add a few terra cotta, metal and baskettype containers when creating an Eng-
lish cottage setting. Set them on yourpatio, steps or in the garden to create afocal point.
Keep your plants looking goodthroughout the season with the prop-er planting mix. Look for pottingmixes with good drainage and waterholding abilities, like Schultz PottingSoil Plus (schultz.com). Check thelabel as some mixes contain enoughfertilizer to last the entire season andwater-retaining crystals to reduce theneed to water.
Use a cactus mix that provides theperfect growing conditions for cactiand succulents. The potting mixshould retain the moisture and nutri-ents the plants need, while providingthe excellent drainage that is a must forthese plants.
Plant any orchids added to your back-yard tropical paradise in a potting mixdesigned for these plants. Use an orchidmix that has excellent drainage and aer-ation, yet retains the moisture and

nutrients these beauties need to thrive.Check your planters daily and water
thoroughly whenever the top few inchesof soil are crumbly and slightly moist.Allow cacti and succulents to go a bitdrier.
Mulch the soil in tropical, herb, veg-etable and annual container gardens.Spread a thin layer of shredded leaves, evergreen needles or twice shredded
bark over the soil surface. Use fine peb-bles for cacti and succulents that likethings hot and dry.
And don’t forget about garden accents.A wattle fence and arbor of twigs andbranches work well for an English gar-den setting, while a water feature canenhance a tropical paradise themed gar-den, and some southwest garden art cancomplete the desert scene you’re goingfor.
So start your vacation this year with atrip to the garden center. Invest in a fewcontainers, the right potting mix andplants. Then plant your way to theretreat of your dreams.

moved to Wurtsboro when he wasyoung. After graduating from Mon-ticello High School in 1973 Hortonpursued an Associate’s Degree inArchitecture from Orange CountyCommunity College (where he methis wife Susan), graduating in 1976.
He then earned his Bachelor’s inArchitecture from SUNY Buffalo in1978 and worked for multiple firmsduring the six years it took to get hisown architecture license in 1983. Thefollowing year Horton opened hispractice and began building bothhomes and commercial buildings inSullivan, Orange and Ulster countiesas well as in New Jersey and Pennsyl-vania.
“He went wherever he was need-ed,” said daughter Jaclyn Horton, who serves as the practice’s officemanager.
One place Horton was needed wasin central Sullivan County, where hedesigned the home pictured on page8H.
The house, built in late2005, was madeentirely ofcement, struc-tural steel, glassand metalframing.
“It was totallyout of the box,”Jaclyn Hortonsaid, “It’s prettyawesome.”
The “out of the box” building wasso unique that Horton won a 2008Sullivan CountyShowcase award forUnique/Most Inter-esting ResidentialHome.
The uniqueness ofthe home was notonly attributed toHorton’s architec-tural skill, but to hishands-on approachworking with hiscustomers through-
out the entire home-buildingprocess. This personal, full customerinvolvement is still highlighted bythe newly formed partnership.
“From the moment we meet aclient, it’s [all about] what theywant,” Jaclyn said.“They give usideas and we just put it down onpaper. We go through multiple meet-ings until they're satisfied. We do alot of commercial work as well andit’s the same with that. We do what-ever it takes to make them happy.”
Other notable buildings by JohnHorton include the Catskill Fly Fish-

Horton’s practicesand legacy are themain reason for theformation of thepartnership.
“He stayed in busi-ness as long as hedid because of his reputation,” Jaclynsaid. “It’s amazing, how no one has abad thing to say about him.”When John first got sick two yearsago and couldn’t really be at the firmhe loved all the time, his family knewwhat needed to be done. In 2012,when 15-year employee Scot Free-stone, also a Sullivan County native, got his architecture license, the planswere set in motion to create the part-
nership.“We knew that we needed to take
the next steps, so we formed thepartnership of Horton & Associatesso that my dad’s name was always
there,” Jaclyn said.“That’s kind of wherewe were going and ithad to go a little faster.”
“He loved this place,”Jaclyn said of her dad’sfirm. “He loved what hedid. He was so good atit.”
In addition to his prac-tice, John was an hon-orary member of the
Wurtsboro Fire Department, pastmember of the Catskill Regional Med-ical Center Board of Directors andPast President of the Wurtsboro Boardof Trade,
His other passion was restoringclassic cars, including his 1957 ChevyTruck, and at the time of his deathwas in the process of restoring a 1963Thunderbird for his wife, and it wasknown as “Sue’s Car.”
Horton & Associates mainoffice has been on Wurtsboro’sSullivan Street since 1984.
