In 2007, then-Taoiseach Bertie Ahern announced a10-year development plan for Glasnevin Cemeteryin conjunction with the Office of Public Works(OPW), to restore it in time for the centenary ofthe 1916 Easter Rising. The Minister of State with responsibility for the
OPW, Martin Mansergh, TD, together with ClareMcGrath and Denis Carr, OPW Chairman andDirector respectively, has taken a deep interest in thisunique project.
As part of the ongoing restorative work inassociation with the OPW, Glasnevin Trust areintegrating the cemetery grounds with the BotanicalGardens and Tolka Valley Linear Park to create averdant green park of over 200 acres. Whencombined, this will create the second largest greenspace amenity in Dublin City after the Phoenix Park.
The restoration works on the 140-acre cemeterysprotected structures include the OConnell Towerand crypt, the Mortuary Chapel as well as the manygraves of significant architectural importance.
Glasnevins Victorian landscaping is being returnedto its former glory as part of the works. Much-neededmaintenance work has been carried out on thecemeterys core infrastructure, including its drainageand eight-and-half kilometres of roadways.
The restoration work, allied to the new museum, will make the cemetery one of the nations greatestvisitor attractions, on a par with the likes ofArlington National Cemetery in Washington, DCand Pre Lachaise in Paris.
We hope you enjoy the new museum and lookforward to your visit.
