Muchcouldbesaidaboutateamthatreboundsfroma1-28finishin2007-08toa10-17overallthe

followingseason,andthat’sjustwhattheMontanaStateUniversityBillings2008-09men’sbasketballteamaccomplished.ThisamazingturnaroundintheinauguralyearofheadcoachGeorgePfeifer’sdirectiondefinitelyexceededexpectations.AsPfe-iferbeginshissecondseasonatthehelmoftheYellowjackets,hecombinesacoreofsixexperienced,veteranplayersandtentalentednewcomers—creatinganewlookforthe‘Jackets.Allonboardarededi-catedtocontinuingthemomentumtowardadvancementintheverycompetitiveGreatNorthwestAthleticConference. “LastyeartheJacketswereexpectedtoplaceatthebottomoftheconference,”Pfeifersaid.“Instead,withtremendousplayereffortandimprovement,theyplacedinthemiddleofoneoftheeliteNCAADivisionIIconferencesinthecountry.Theeffortthoseplayersputforthtookusfromaplacewhereitwasn’tuncommontodropgamesbyanaverageof27points,toapointwheretenoflastseason’slosseswerebyfivepointsorlessandhingedonthebounceoftheball.” Thistremendousimprovementbodeswellforthecomingseasonandthe‘Jack-ets’abilitytokeeptheenergygoing,de-spitethelossofsomekeyscoringpower. “We’velost40pointsfromtherosterwiththelossofsomeofourscorers,includingstandoutsMikeHallandTravisBunker,”Pfeifersaid.Thegrouplast

Threefirstyearplayerswillroundoutthisyear’sroster.Atpost,lookforAndrewHickman(6’7,250lb.)fromWoodward,Oklahoma.whileFreshmenJoelBarndt(6’8,185lb.)comesinfromBillingsCentralHighSchoolandRobTrabing(6’3,190lb.),fromBuffalo,Wyomingcomesinatguard.Intime,Hickmanisexpectedtobringmuchneededsizeandgirthtotheprogram,whileBarndt,whowillredshirtthisseason,isexpectedtobecomeamain-stayinthefutureoftheprogram. “Ilikethegroupofathleteswe’vebroughtin,”Pfeifersaid.“Wehaveaddedsomedecentpiecestothepuzzle.Thekeytooursuccesswillbeingettingeveryonetolearnhisrespectiverollandtherollofeachteammember.Ourdepth,whichwasanissuelastyear,ismuchimprovedthisseason.”Theschedulewillonceagainbechal-lengingandthepreseasonpollshavethe‘JacketspickedfifthintheGNAC.ThegoalwillbetocontinuethemomentumandfurtheradvancetheprogramintheGNAC.“Ourleaguewillonceagainbeoneofthetoughestinthecountry,”Pfeifersaid.“Ifyoushowupwithoutyour‘A’game,chancesforsuccessarenotgreat.Ilikethisteamandbelieveinwhatitcanbecome.Wehaveguyswhoreallyliketoplay,practiceandhavebeenveryexciting.”

a1-28and6-22programovertheprevioustwoyearsandnotonlygettingtheprogramcompetitive,butwinning. PfeifercomestoMSUBafterthreeyearsattheUniver-sityofIdahowhereheinheritedaprogramthatwasinlastplaceandpredictedbyeverymediaandcoachespolltofinishlast.Intheendtheyprovedthosepredictionswrong,finishinginthemiddleoftheWesternAthleticCon-ferenceandwinningthreeoftheirlastfiveleaguegamestogivetheprogramitshighestfinishintheWACatthattime. PriortoIdaho,PfeiferhadaverysuccessfultenureatLewis-ClarkStateCollegewherehewastheheadmen’scoachfrom1989-2005andtheassistantcoachfrom1987-1989.Hegainedhis200thcareerwinastheWarrior’sheadcoachin2001-02.Hethensettheschoolrecordforcoachingcareerwinswith213victoriesina105-79winovertheUniversityofGreatFalls,whilegarnering294careerwinsathisalmamater.Duringhistenure,hebuiltL-CintooneofthestrongestprogramsinthePacificNorthwestandledtheWarriorstonationalprominence. Duringthe2002-03season,theWarriorspostedaschool-recordforwinswitha31-6overallmarkandan.837winningpercentage.Priortohisarrivalasacoach,L-Chadwononlyoneplayoffgameinitsbasketballhistoryasafour-yearinstitution(1947).IttookPfeiferonlythreeyearstoguideL-CtoaconferencetitleandtheirfirstberthintheNAIAchampionshipbeatingSimon-FraserUni-versity,WesternWashing-tonandSt.Martin’sCollegeinabesttwo-out-of-threeseries.Thismarkedthefirsttimeinthe99-yearhistoryofthemen’sbasketballprogramthatitqualifiedforanationaltournament.ThatyeartheWarriorsposted23wins,whichwasaschool-recordatthetimeforwinsinoneseason.Twoyearslaterin1995,PfeiferledL-CtoitssecondNAIAberthinavic-toryoverSeattleUniversity. Inhis16yearsastheL-Cheadcoach,histeamswouldplayineighttitlegames,eightdistrict

championshipsandreachthenationaltournamentsixtimes.Whenhetookovertheprogram,theschoolrecordforwinsinasingleseasonwas21.InPfeifer’slastsixseasons,theWarriorsaveragedover23winsperyear.HehasbeenselectedCoachoftheYearfivetimesandhasrecruitedandcoached18NAIAall-Americansaswellas18Academicall-Americans.Ofthe75men’sbasketballrecordsheldatL-C,Pfeifer-coachedteamsposted51ofthem. Notonetoshyawayfromplayingtoughschedules,theWarriorsunderPfeifer’sreinfaced26NCAADivisionIop-ponents.In2000,Lewis-ClarkStatedefeatedtheUniversityofIdaho68-54andBoiseStateby14pointsin1995. PriortohispositionatL-C,Pfeiferhadatwo-yearstintasanassistantbasketballcoachunderlegendaryheadcoach,DickHannan.Healsoservedastheheadwomen’sbasketballcoachatRockyMountainCollegefortwoyears(1985-87).Pfeiferwasanassistantcoachformen’sbas-ketballatRMCduringthe1984-85campaignunderMarkAdams.HewasapartofRMC’sfirst-everNAIANationalTournamentberthafterbeingcrownedDistrictXIIchampi-ons.
