A Message from the Board Chair, Stephen Waque and Executive Director, Alan Nickell

"We are a community of minds…"In October, 2009 Rosalie Hall hosts a gathering of the Misericordia Heritage Group which includes representatives of the Misericordia Sisters from Montreal and New York City, as well as community agencies and hospitals that were founded by the Sisters - from across Canada and the U.S.A. We also hold a shared training day with these organizations and young parent centres from across Ontario, including a presentation by our research partners from the Hospital for Sick Children.

Our theme for the gathering is "Community of Minds". As a concept it originates from early childhood learning and development, but in recent years it has been applied to promote adaptive and effective organizational development. In children, as they develop language, they explore differences between themselves and others and begin to understand beliefs and engage in "community" behaviours. In organizations, our shared conversations and stories - our reminiscences of the past and plans for the future - inform the beliefs, values and cultures of our organizations.

Our heritage has evolved from our roots in the spiritual community of the Misericordia Sisters. Today, Rosalie Hall - and all the professionals and partner organizations that share services with us - has become a strong "community" of diverse minds with many gifts and talents to contribute to our work in support of children, youth and young parents.

Our "community of minds" is informed and strengthened by these many partners and organizations. To highlight a few key groups, we would like to thank the following for their shared learning and service provision:

East Metro Youth Services,

Jean Tweed Centre,

Toronto District and Toronto Catholic District school boards,

Humewood House Association and Massey Centre

Aisling Discoveries Child and Family Centre

Diane Benoit and our research team from Hospital for Sick Children

Jane Kenny

Sharon Jolliffe

In 2009, we welcome exciting new shared approaches with the Toronto Catholic Children's Aid Society and Children's Aid Society of Toronto in developing care and treatment pathways for young parents and their children in cooperation with the Young Parent Centres in Toronto.

There are many more who support our "community of minds" and are associated with us at Rosalie Hall. Your support and the generous contributions of our donors make our work possible, and we thank you all!

A Standing Ovation at the Angel Luncheon

Thank you for your support

Archbishop Collins toured the agency and visited with the staff and the young families. He was greeted by a young mother (left) and a card signed with fingerprints and hand prints was given to His Grace by the children. Many of the young women asked for his blessing, as he affirmed the worth of each young mother and child. Rosalie Hall thanks the Archbishop for his words of compassion and thanks him for his support of young mothers and children.

This year, along with the Children's Aid Foundation,Rosalie Hall awarded $22,000 to fund post secondary education. Every year, we are in awe of the challenges faced by so many applicants and their sheer will and determination to overcome these struggles to succeed and follow their dreams. Congratulations to:

It was a time to be inspired! Guest speaker and past client, Stephanie Lewis (pictured left, centre) moved the attendees of the 2009 Angel Luncheon to tears and to their feet, as we journeyed with her from uncertainty and struggles to a place of success and dreams coming true. Thank you to Stephanie, for her commitment to Rosalie Hall and to everyone who supported this event.

Someone once told me, when it comes to children, the days are sometimes long but the years are rather short. This certainly holds true for being at Rosalie Hall. For many staff the constant fight against injustice, poverty, instability, violence and abuse in the lives of young mothers and children, make the days very long indeed. The realization of how short the years can be comes when strong successful young families return to share their successes, to mentor, to motivate and to inspire, not only other young families but also staff and volunteers and supporters alike. As each year goes by we reflect on how far Rosalie Hall has come. From the humble beginnings in 1914, to now helping over 3000 lives each year. Our foundation was built by the Misericordia Sisters. Our today is possible because of the generosity of friends, supporters, and contributors of Rosalie Hall. Our tomorrow is celebrated in the eyes of every young mother and child with hope and promise. Rosalie Hall thanks our donors and supporters. With your help our days and years are making a difference in the life of every young mother and child. Larissa Bholaramsingh, Manager of Development

A Mother's letter to her child...

Our Vision

Our Mission

Our Heritage

Since the day you were born I have been madly in love with you. The first time I held you the feeling of being your mother overjoyed my heart with love.

I hope and dream that one day you will a young man with dignity and self-respect, and that you never forget where you came from. You can be anything that you want to be as long as you do it gracefully.

Your eyes make my world alright. If I am down and I see you smile, I forget about what was bothering me and remember that you are what I live for. Your dad hasn't been around but I know he must care for you.

I love you and want you to know that you have changed my life for the better. Always remember that I am here and will never be far from you. When you look back at mistakes you've made, you will always see me there to help you and guide you.

You brighten my life and make me smile. You are my baby and you have helped me not be a prisoner of my history, instead, I am to be your strength for the future. I love you and cherish you in my heart.

Christene, written for Akil

We envision young single women and men, their children and families leading healthy, meaningful and productive lives.

Rosalie Hall, with compassion and respect, assists young parents in need and their children to realize their potential through the provision of a wide range of community, residential, educational and child development services.

Rosalie Hall shares in a heritage of more than 150 years of service by the Misericordia Sistersto young single pregnant women, theirchildren, and families—serving Toronto communities since 1914. We are part of an international family providing health and social services as a living expression of the compassionate mission of the Misericordia Sisters.

When I first came to Rosalie Hall…“I was very nervous. I didn't know how my son and I would be treated. As I went through my program day by day, I made new friends and got toknow my teachers. The CDC (Child Development Centre) staff worked with my son and myself, and showed us how to be a family. They even taught my son how tofeed himself and how to play withother children—without violence. Rosalie Hall was the best schoolI ever attended. They even offeredparenting groups to help my child and I bond better. They believed in me when I couldn't believe in myself. And most of all Rosalie Hall works! My son and I thank everyone at Rosalie Hall.” AMBER
