My daughter would not stop talking about her OMSI day (we do not get this kind of enthusiasm after days at school). We’ve had to make her pause in explaining what she did so she’d eat some dinner. She loved the class. The details about physics and rocketry were just enough to be informative and engaging for a 7-year-old.

In partnership with leading companies and educational institutions, OMSI is redesigning our largest exhibit hall to inspire the next generation of creative problem solvers. The Center for Innovation will be a place for learners from all backgrounds to use tools to collaboratively design, make, and test sustainable solutions to community challenges, from emergency preparedness to health. OMSI will present challenges
that are meaningful to visitors, illustrating how engineering, technology, and design can be used to improve our daily lives.
The Center’s redesign will attract students who have been traditionally underrepresented in science careers and encourage them to see themselves as scientists and pursue related careers with guidance from industry mentors. Early work has been completed: a new entryway
that reveals the historic brick of the original building, the Welcome Wall featuring a vast network of LEDs that stream data, graphics, and animations to inspire wonder and curiosity and showcase partnerships and special events, and the Greg Chaillé Curium, a space dedicated to 4–8-year-old design thinkers.
CENTER FOR INNOVATION IS WORKING TOGETHER
By helping kids explore science outside of the classroom, our partnership with OMSI lays groundwork for the next generation of scientists and engineers. As an energy company focused on advancing the next hundred years of innovation, those inquisitive and highly-educated professionals are our future employees. They are the experts who will help us discover new and better ways to power our world.

The Center for Innovation will feature companies and partnerships that look for innovative approaches for solving community problems. In Winter 2018, Pacific Power and OMSI began working collaboratively to test a new hands-on exhibit that challenges visitors to design and make generators to help a community that is experiencing a disruption in power. The exhibit uses evidence-based strategies to engage girls and minority
youth, such as a storyline that invites youth to solve the challenges because they want to help people. It showcases Pacific Power’s work in the Pacific Northwest and highlights the company as a regional STEM employer. OMSI and Pacific Power’s vision for the future involves partners working together to help ignite an education transformation and engage broad audiences of diverse learners.
OMSI plans to work with other community-minded regional companies to create real-world challenges for our visitors to tackle. We strive to be a trailhead, pointing learners to opportunities that will deepen their knowledge and tapping into local expertise in the process.
CENTER FOR INNOVATION IS PARTNERSHIP
I had a teacher once who told me that women did not have the temperament for math and science. I didn’t mind proving him wrong. I am where I am because I love my job, I’m committed to building and maintaining a safe and resilient water system, and I have a personal touch that is not necessarily common with my generation of engineers.

This past year, OMSI completed a five-year research project funded by the National Science Foundation, Designing Our World: A Community Envisioning Girls as Engineers. The project centered on science, technology, engineering, and math-equity, and addressed the need for more youth, especially those traditionally underrepresented in the field, to pursue engineering careers. OMSI researchers found that using a compelling
storyline that illuminates the social, personally relevant, and altruistic nature of science and engineering creates an environment that encourages diverse youth to solve problems. In January 2018, OMSI shared our learnings with educators from across the region at a two-day workshop. Engineers from LAM Research highlighted ways their jobs are altruistic, collaborative, and relevant to students. Program directors from Adelante Mujeres
discussed the culturally relevant ways they reframe “failure” to encourage Latinas to engage with difficult content. The 25+ educators left with in-depth training on engineering activities they can use in their teaching. OMSI works diligently to be a trailhead, offering next steps for educators and young learners to deepen their engagement and experiences.
CENTER FOR INNOVATION IS SOLVING PROBLEMS
With the recent addition of the Early Childhood Education space in the Center for Innovation, it is now much easier to bridge the gap between our four-year old’s interests and our two-year old’s capabilities with age appropriate activities side by side.

Since opening our doors 75 years ago, OMSI has excelled at engaging the youngest learners. Our Science Playground hosts over 100,000 children annually—crawling, tottering, and skipping their way through the exhibit hall. OMSI stimulates their senses and prompts their imaginations through water, sand, and dramatic
play. Our water play area has seen so much use that it sprang a leak and sadly had to be decommissioned. Temporarily replaced by rotating pop-up play experiences, rest assured that a new water area is being planned!
OMSI is reinvesting in early learning experiences in
the museum, building partnerships with community-based organizations, and deepening our communication with parents and childcare providers to ensure children are exposed to developmentally-appropriate science content at the earliest ages possible.
EARLY CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES IS COMMUNICATING
The fundamental belief in children’s curiosity, intelligence, and capacity is a value we all must share. I am proud to be a part of OMSI’s new Curium—a space that allows children to playfully explore the answers to challenging questions.

To meet the needs of our member households with young children, we’ve opened an additional Early Childhood area in the Center for Innovation—The Greg Chaillé Curium. Designed for learners 4–8 years of age, the Curium is a 2,000 ft2 interactive play space and a crucial component of OMSI’s 20-year vision to prepare
youth to be the innovative problem solvers of the 21st century. The Curium is filled with opportunities for open-ended play, allowing families to drive their own creative experiences and OMSI educators to add layers of complexity and depth to each activity. The iconic bright red smoke stack has been transformed into an oversized
musical experience with specially tuned strings. Nearby, custom Bernoulli blowers invite kids to experiment with air and forces using scarves, balls, and paper planes. Caregivers are encouraged to play an active role in their child’s explorations, sparking intergenerational collaboration, risk-taking, and discovery.
EARLY CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES IS GROWING
OMSI provides so many opportunities for creative play. We also really do appreciate the chances for our kids to interact with other kids they don’t know.

Now, we’re expanding early learning experiences and sharing research on brain development with caregivers and educators across the region. By blending cutting-edge scientific research with playful, sensory experiences, our exhibits and programs
encourage children and caregivers to challenge, experiment, and grow together.
In 2017, we began the critical work of supporting families and caregivers of young children in rural areas across the state, piloting a new type of professional development training. Designed for early childhood
educators, daycare providers, parents, and other caregivers, the program provides tools and training to empower them to feel confident engaging young children with science. We’re taking it to five more locations this year and deepening our partnerships across the region.

We all look to the same night sky—Western scientists, indigenous storytellers, and children everywhere. Space Science at OMSI brings together people from different backgrounds to contemplate and study the universe. While we see the same stars, we learn so much from viewing them through someone else’s eyes and cultural lens.
Space Science had a big year at OMSI—the Kendall Planetarium, one of the most enduring attractions in the museum’s history, received comprehensive technological and environmental upgrades. Made possible by our generous donors, the new planetarium immerses visitors in the deepest recesses of the universe through exponentially brighter projection and
customizable content. But we’re not limited to space—this unique learning laboratory is a venue for special interactive presentations on a wide array of topics from the science of dreams to the effects of music on brain chemistry.
Space is limitless, and we strive to be, too.

As a hub of cutting edge science, OMSI strives to highlight Oregon’s forward-looking business and industry. In partnership with Airstream Adventures Northwest, NASA, and several cultural organizations, OMSI created the Lenses on the Sky exhibit, featuring a dazzling interactive installation. As visitors enter the hall,
they encounter an aluminum skyline suspended from the ceiling above, its undulating forms signifying exploration of the unknown. The donated aluminum and fabrication expertise will enrich the impact of the exhibit for visitors for years to come. The expertise of Airstream Adventures as well as Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde,
Indigenous Education Institute, Northwest Tibetan Cultural Association, PPS Title VI Indian Education, and others allowed OMSI to create an experience far more powerful than we could have done alone.

Our investments in Space Science go far beyond the museum—OMSI continues to expand and introduce new programming across the region through in-school portable planetarium shows, summer astronomy classes, and stargazing camps at Camp Hancock near Fossil, Oregon.
OMSI campers travel to the expansive desert of Central Oregon where the lack of light pollution allows them to witness the sparkle of millions of stars they’ve never seen before. The sight of the farthest reaches of the Milky Way, spiraling outward in a glowing band across the sky, is their quiet revelation of the vastness of space. The goal of OMSI educators is to make sure these campers
never forget the first time they studied the night sky with high-powered telescopes from a remote Oregon outpost. Who knows, maybe a few future campers will start a lifelong journey that launches them to the International Space Station. We know some already have!

Reaching over 180,000 students annually, OMSI Outreach Education packs up the best of the museum and travels to every county in Oregon and across six states annually. We bring exciting experiments and high-tech equipment to give students hands-on opportunities their teachers might not have the resources to provide. By igniting kids’ curiosity, OMSI Outreach Education
sparks an interest that opens doorways into science and technology learning. From classroom programs involving dissections, engineering, and astronomy, to school-wide assemblies and a portable planetarium, our Outreach is aligned with science standards to deepen and augment teachers’ work. We enrich the classroom experience so students can become creative, life-long
learners interested in contributing to an increasingly complex and technologically rich society. OMSI can achieve more when we work with education, community, business, and government partners to identify key goals and help expand science and technology programming in rural areas across the region.

Bringing OMSI experiences into communities is
critical to accessibility, something our many supporting partners understand.
“This experience was excellent for some of my ELD (English Language Development) students. The opportunity to touch, see, smell, and fully experience these topics really contributed in some vocabulary retention.
Everything fit in so smoothly with where we are in science at school and you’ve given all our kids a wealth of experience to relate new information to. Thank you!”

OUTDOOR EDUCATION IS MAKING CONNECTIONS
Since 1951, OMSI has owned and operated popular Camp Hancock, located near the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument in Central Oregon. Outdoor Science School at Camp Hancock offers unforgettable week-long learning experiences for students from across the region about astronomy, desert ecology, reptiles, paleontology, fossils, wildlife, survival skills, and more. Fifth grade teacher Katrina Scott, from Lookingglass Elementary in
Roseburg, credits three years of OMSI Outdoor School with raising her students’ scores on state science assessments.
“Every kid said Hancock totally helped them on the state science test,” Katrina recounts. “One even said she was singing the sediment song she learned at camp to help her.”
OMSI camps have ignited imaginations for decades,
but we’ve never been so excited to spark campers’ curiosity, enliven students’ problem-solving skills, and deepen their confidence.
December 2019
Because of generous support from donors like you, we reached children and families in six Pacific Northwest states over the year. You have invested in your community’s chance to experience hands-
on science and learn valuable problem solving skills. That chance can lead children to become leaders in science and technology career fields. That chance can change the world. Thank you for
understanding the importance of this vital work and for your continued support.

President and CEO Nancy Stueber and Kimberly Cooper, OMSI Emeritus Trustee and Gala Co-Chair at OMSI’s May 2018 Gala.
This calendar presents a year of hands-on learning, long-term impact, and science-fueled fun. In the past 12 months, we’ve seen years of strategic planning and investment come to fruition—from brand new interactive exhibits to increased travelling programs at schools across the Northwest. We have an exciting year ahead, and there’s still so much more we are going to do. With your support, we strive to expand OMSI as a center of excellence in science teaching and learning, and to empower a scientifically literate public by:
• Working with the City of Portland and local partners to further develop our campus into a welcoming and inclusive community destination for the exchange of ideas and creative expression where scientists, makers, artisans, engineers, and inventors work, live, and play
• Extending a robust network of partnerships with community-based organizations and schools across the region to reach more communities
• Creating exhibits and programs that inspire visitors to be innovators and problem solvers
• Elevating the staff experience to recruit, develop, and retain staff of diverse backgrounds and talents so that everyone can do their best work
As a trusted Oregon institution, OMSI believes we must continually push ourselves to deliver relevant science education experiences in an ever-changing world. I am proud to work alongside our passionate and creative staff who enact our mission to inspire curiosity through engaging science learning experiences and stimulate informed action. On behalf of us all, thank you for your commitment to OMSI—we cannot do this without you.
