Hello NAMI Members and friends of NAMI!!!
Wasn't our big NAMIWalks the best one ever? It's always so much fun seeing so many people gathering together to celebrate NAMI, honor loved ones, and to stomp out stigma. We all proudly wear our team t-shirts for all to see! I always see many NAMI colleagues that I haven’t seen in a long time and enjoy the opportunity to get caught up on what is happening in their world. I hope that you enjoyed the walk as much as I did! Many of our members are preparing to go to the NAMI National Convention at the end of June in New Orleans. This year is special for NAMI Dallas (soon to be NAMI North Texas) and for NAMI Texas. NAMI Texas is the State Affiliate of the year and will be honored as such! We are so proud of NAMI Texas and grateful for all that they've done to assist us with implementing the Standards of Excellence and with expanding our educational efforts throughout the State. We are also grateful for all of the wonderful legislative education and leadership we get from them as well. That is extremely important as we prepare for the next legislative session! Also for this convention, NAMI Dallas has been asked to select an Ending the Silence team to present for Tipper Gore who will be in attendance for the event! We have fully embraced the evidence based Ending the Silence program and have been invited into many of the schools in our area to present this program to students and staff to share with them our knowledge and experiences regarding mental health conditions and recovery--to educate and to offer hope! Tipper Gore’s foundation donated 1 million dollars to NAMI to spread this wonderful program further and we want to thank her in person for her commitment to mental health as we present the program she helped to promote! I hope that some of you will be able to attend and celebrate with us. We have much to be grateful for and to celebrate this year. I hope that some of you will be in attendance at our next general meeting! We look forward to seeing you there every month. Come join us for a support group at 6pm, a light dinner at 7pm, and an educational presentation at 7:30pm. Also, I would ask that you think about what topics you would be interested in for the coming year. We want to make the meetings as meaningful as we can for you and the only way for us to do that is if you let us know what you would be interested in learning more about. I hope to see you at the meeting! Sherry Cusumano President of NAMI Dallas

NAMI Dallas is Headed to New Orleans!
We are so excited for NAMI’s National Convention this year!! NAMI Dallas has been invited to provide an Ending the Silence presentation for a large break-out session. Former First Lady Tipper Gore will open the session as we show our appreciation for her foundation’s generous donation to help expand the Ending the Silence program across the country. We couldn’t be more excited for our dedicated volunteer presenters to have the opportunity to inspire other NAMI affiliates. Lead presenter Lezlie White will be joined by Young Adult presenter Brooke Anderson to share the inspiring Ending the Silence presentation. In the audience to cheer them on will be many NAMI Dallas members, staff, and board members, along with several Young Adult volunteers who help make the ETS program a success in Dallas. We will be sure to share pictures of this exciting event in the July newsletter!

Check out this inspiring video featuring NAMI Dallas member Sallie Crotty.
When educator Sallie Smither Crotty told her gripping tale of confronting mental illness and winning, everyone
in the audience could see the power she brought to that fight—and why she won.

“My primary clinician hummed ‘Eye of the Tiger’ when I entered the room. I laughed and flexed my muscles.
I felt like I had just left the ring: sweaty and victorious. One nurse said, ‘You’ll be one of our success stories,
Sallie. You’re ready.’”
