FEBRUARY 10, 2015 R I C H L A N D H I L L S C H R I S T I A N C H U R C H
This past Sunday I shared with you the story of a 19th century evangelist Dwight L. Moody who lost everything he had built in the Great Chicago fire of 1871. He went from a large church with around a thousand in his Sunday School class to nothing as this fire swept through Chicago and his life. As hard and painful as this loss was, out of it came an evangelist who would impact millions for Christ. The reward far exceeded the cost.
There is a cost to following Christ. It cannot be escaped unless we choose to simply ignore the great calling God has placed in our hearts. God’s plans will often be something that we cannot fathom doing because he will ask us to give up or set aside our own desires and agenda to follow Him. We are called “To pick up our crosses and follow Him”. Be open to God’s movement and pray that he will express his love to the world through your life. Let His light shine for all the world to see through your lives and church.
Last week I placed a challenge and initiative before you all. First, between now and Easter I am challenging you to come to church every Sunday. One of the things that breeds strength and unity within any organization is consistency. You come every week, and you get to see the people you love and worship with more often. You also get to know what’s happening here and of course, get to hear God’s word proclaimed. We gather around the Table and share in the Lord’s Supper.
I also wrote last week about the “Plus One” initiative. Since my arrival I have heard people share with me about how much they love God and love this church. I figured those were the kind of things people looking for a church would want to hear about. So I am asking you to invite to our church one person at a time or “Plus One”. With Lent about to begin and Easter not too far off, pray that God will provide opportunities to share your faith with others. Then be ready for God to open doors of opportunity in this area. Say a prayer, open your mouth, and let God fill it.

Week of Compassion OfferingFebruary 15 & 22
When some of the earliest followers of Jesus experienced a famine in Jerusalem, the Apostle Paul organized an appeal to respond to their needs. Christian communities in distant places put their Compassion into Action and gave to the ecumenical offering, much like we do today through Week of Compassion. The Week of Compassion offering reaches widely, impacting lives in our own neighborhoods and those we may never meet but who are in need of our compassion. God provides the resources so that we can give back. We’re giving back to God what is already God’s -- so that we might all thrive! “I do not mean that there should be relief for others and pressure on you, but it is a questions of a fair balance between your present abundance and their need, so that their abundance may be for your need, in order that there may be a fair balance” (2 Cor. 8:12-13). Our abundance becomes their need and their need becomes our abundance. What if we all lived as if this is
our call? We would change the wor ld . Wi l l you put your Compassion into Action? We will be receiving our W e e k o f C o m p a s s i o n O f f e r i n g o n S u n d a y s , February 15 & 22nd.
