Pass at National 4 Practical Woodworking or evidence of previous creative and practical hand skills.

Pupil can demonstrate confident practical skills, awareness of Health & Safety rules and measuring accurately.

Learning Intentions

Pupils will be able to:

Work in a safe manner in a workshop

environment and will be encouraged to work

independently.

Measure, cut and finish various Carcase and Flat

Frame construction joints such as Through

Housing Joints, Dowel Joints, Lap Joints and Cross

Halving Joints to a tolerance of 1mm.

Use safe working practise to set up and use

machinery whilst in the workshop including

Sanding Machine, Pedestal Drill, Mortise Machine

and Woodwork Lathe.

Complete a Final model that will be completed

with little/no assistance from the teacher.

Complete regular homework during the week as

well as attending one period of theory work per

week. The majority of the course is based in the

workshop with pupils building on their basic hand

skills from National 4.

Pupils will be assessed in class time by means of :

Practical tasks/projects carried out for each area

of the course - Flat Frame Construction , Carcase

Construction and Machining and Finishing. These

assessments are for internal purposes only and

will allow their class teacher to monitor the

pupils progress.

Demonstrate safe working practise by maintaining

a detailed logbook of their ability to safely use and

maintain tools and machinery.

Final Assessment:

A course Assignment Task towards the end of the

session allowing the pupils to demonstrate the

skills they have gained while undertaking the

three course areas, (70%)

Final Written Exam (30%)

Pupils must successfully complete projects in all areas to

have the skills necessary to complete the Assignment

Task.
