With another eventful year behind us, we are
delighted to present the Technopolis Events
Recap 2012. Published for the second time,
the recap provides highlights of our almost
one hundred events, shares some special
moments and hopefully gives a flavor of the
networking and matchmaking opportunities
accessible to our customers in eight cities in
Finland, in Tallinn, Estonia and St.
Petersburg, Russia.
TalentTalks® and Technopolis
Matchmaking Mornings
complemented our family of targeted events. Naapurit
tutuiksi – Meet your Neighbors events expanded to several
new sites and Technopolis Movie Club was piloted.
Technopolis Matchmaking Mornings, events tailored to the
specific needs of the customer, generated business
opportunities and deals, provided insights and new
contacts and networks; for more, see pages 8 and 9.
The concept of the new TalentMatch proved to be
extremely powerful. The service combines an online social
media platform and live pitching and recruitment events to
match international talent
with growth companies and
other knowledge-intensive
firms and organizations.
Five hugely popular and
successful TalentTalks
events attracted a
growing number of
recruiting companies
and international
talent and matches happened! The concept and events also
attracted a lot of interest among various stakeholders and
media: finally something concrete, positive and encouraging at
the time of huge challenges in the economy. Read more on
pages 6 and 7.
There is plenty of
untapped potential for
matchmaking among
the over 1400
Technopolis customer
companies in Finland, Russia and Estonia. This community
forms a platform on which we can develop services and events
to help companies in finding customers, partners, financiers,
talent and other resources. In 2013, a completely new event
will be launched to bring together our customers from all
Technopolis sites. Interesting topics, exciting speakers,
efficient business matchmaking and fun – stories will be born.
Stay tuned!
Finally, I would encourage everyone
to join and actively participate in the
events and take advantage of the
matchmaking services and networking opportunities. This is all
about the success and growth of our customers.
I would also like to thank all those who joined our events in
2012. The contribution of our partners, sponsors and speakers
has been vital in making all these great events happen. Thank
you!
Last but not least, big thanks to the Technopolis Events team
for their dedication and passion for high-quality networking and
matchmaking events where business opportunities are
generated and deals happen. I’m so proud of you.

In less than a year, a pilot project by Technopolis and
Otaniemi Marketing developed into a scalable and
efficient recruitment platform serving the need for
talents in fast-growing SME’s as well as big
corporations.
Characterized by Helsinki Times (15.11.2012) as a project
of “national importance”, TalentMatch brings together
employers and internationally qualified, experienced
talents at the social career web site www.talentmatch.fi
and at TalentTalks® recruitment and matchmaking events.
Talents looking for new opportunities can engage with
potential employers online, pitch live their own
qualifications and even pre-book face-to-face meetings
with potential employers at TalentTalks events.
Hiring companies can pre-screen talents with the help of
the online matching tool, JobGo, before booking meetings
with them or engaging into communication. That makes
TalentMatch platform most efficient for SME’s limited in
time and HRM resources.
As for big corporations, they can effectively develop
Employer branding and gain wide visibility during and
between TalentTalks events, not to forget that the events
are perfect occasions for establishing new contacts,
finding partners and networking with professionals.
Despite the rough situation especially in the ICT industry,
there are still plenty of opportunities for professionals to
find new and exciting jobs in the growing Finnish
companies targeting international markets, as YLE News
stated in their report after visiting the 5th TalentTalks®
event on November 15th.
One of the regular participants is Timo Valtonen, Head of
Services of Kiosked: “At TalentTalks matchmaking
events we have been able to expand our international
talent pool – an integral building block for the growth of
Kiosked. TalentMatch is a cost-efficient way for a growth
company to gain employer visibility and connect with
international candidates”.
“Our company has participated in two TalentTalks
matchmaking events so far and obtained leads to
international talents whose experience can add real
value to our business. We have strong intent to
participate in the upcoming events as well.”

As featured in Länsiväylä

there are already several
success stories from Talent

TalentMatch service.
Engineer Jukka Ronkainen,

met with his current

Security specialized
company, at the TalentTalks
in May. TalentMatch online
platform allows to create a live professional profile
together with the behavioural profile, giving a potential
employer a wider picture of a talent compared to a
traditional CV. During the TalentTalks event,
Ronkainen says, there was a great possibility to talk to
a few hiring companies, tell briefly about himself in a
short pitch, and listen to what hiring companies have
got to offer. Nixu had just the position Ronkainen
wanted the most and after his negotiation with the
company’s representative, a perfect match was found.
“This is an effective way to screen several

Two events were organized together with Tampere Nokia
Bridge, a program for employees exiting Nokia. The Bridge
program offers an entrepreneurship path for those with a
new business idea. The programme can lead to start-up
funding and exposure to angel investors, venture capitalists
and other entrepreneurs.
In August, the full-day event gave a broad introduction into
entrepreneurship and networks available. The speeches
covered topics from setting up a business to marketing and
sales, IPR to accounting. “Been there. Done that” was told
by Varaani Works, Team Action Zone and HitSeed. These
three companies presented their case studies and told about
their path from Nokia into a start-up.
In December, the theme was “More is More” and the main
target was to introduce start-ups to entrepreneurs and bring
them together to form larger units. Fascinating case studies
were presented by five companies: Vincit, Retrail, TreLab,
Advant Games and PragmatIQ.
Juha Latvala from Nokia was happy after the events: “We
had two extremely successful entrepreneurial events during
autumn 2012. I’m looking forward to see the type of
companies emerging from the start-ups and I’m confident
that we are going to see new success stories for the people
themselves and also the local region.”
Entrepreneurship is

Matchmaking Powered by Technopolis
”From Nokia into Entrepreneurship”
In 2012, we launched a new event type,
Technopolis Matchmaking Morning. These
turnkey events are precisely tailored
according to the customer’s targets and
needs. In addition to physical on-site
events, it is also possible to organize an
event over video connecting all ten
Technopolis sites.
This year, five tailored matchmaking events
were organized where the program
consisted of keynote speeches, case
studies, workshops, mini-fairs, networking
breaks and pre-booked one-to-one
meetings.
Juha Latvala from Nokia emphasized the
importance for start-ups to join forces and to
form larger business entities.
“Future Nursing Homes
are Built Today”
The event was held in May 2012 in Technopolis Innopoli,
Espoo, attracting 60 participants interested in the future of
elderly care and nursing homes. Networking breakfast and
the keynote presentations by Fira, Attendo and the city of
Vantaa were followed by pre-arranged one-to-one meetings.
”Organizing the event together with Technopolis was easy
and convenient. The event also opened doors to an
audience that we had not reached before”, says Fira’s Head
of Administration, Annabella Haavisto.
“Kampus tutuksi”
Kampus tutuksi - Get to Know your Campus, held for the
first time in 2011 and now again in November 2012 in
Technopolis Yliopistonrinne, Tampere, gathered some 90
participants from Tampere University, Tampere Business
Campus and companies from Technopolis.
A most interesting keynote on wellbeing at work was given
by Professor Marja-Liisa Manka from Tampere University.
Pirjo Järvinen from Tampere Business Campus presented a
case study on knowledge networking, experience-based
knowledge sharing with a colleague or a fellow worker. The
mini-fair and three parallel workshops received excellent
feedback and high ratings from the participants. As
described by Jukka Mäkinen, Development Director at
Tampere University: “Collaboration between the University
and companies is essential today. We are very happy with
what we achieved with the event.”
Professor Marja-Liisa Manka, Tampere University,

“Looking for Energy
Efficient Solutions for our
Buildings!”
In January 2012, about 60 participants joined the event
which was organized in 8 cities linked together via video.
The program included a networking breakfast and keynotes
about energy & eco-efficiency in Technopolis’ and Fira’s
building concepts. The speeches were followed by pre-
arranged one-to-one video meetings.
“We wanted to try something new in order to reach
more companies operating in the energy effieciency
business in Finland and Estonia. A video-event was
an excellent and timesaving tool.”

“This was needed. Technopolis is

Naapurit Tutuiksi - Meet Your Neighbors events are tar-
geted at the companies in the same Technopolis building
or campus, with the purpose of facilitating introductions
and helping people to get to know each other. After all,
the atmosphere at the campus is made by the companies
and persons working daily next to each other. And you
never know: maybe the needed business partner or a
new client is located closer than you think!
The very first Meet Your Neighbors event in Oulu was held
in Technopolis Smarthouse on April 17 and it was a great
success. Targeted at all companies in Technopolis Linnan-
maa, the event attracted some 60 participants from over
25 businesses. During the afternoon, a dozen neighbors
gave short, one-minute introductions on themselves. LM
Ericsson gave an insight into their expectations regarding
Oulu’s ICT ecosystem and R&D network. Above all, the
focus of the afternoon was on informal networking – what a
lively buzz took over the Smarthouse lobby!

MoneyTalks® event series was started in November 2006
to create a platform where financiers and entrepreneurs
seeking funding could meet and network on a regular
basis. With more than 4200 participants so far, some 200
presenting companies – and triple that with one-minute
and two-minute power pitches included – and the
geographical expansion from Helsinki region to cities
such as Oulu, Tampere, Lappeenranta, St. Petersburg
and Tallinn, the event has established its position as a
top entrepreneur-to-financier event.
In 2012, six half-day MoneyTalks events were arranged in
Espoo, Helsinki, Tampere, Oulu and Tallinn. In May, the first
MoneyTalks event which only featured Russian cases, was
arranged.
The 11th full-day
MoneyTalks Forum
was held in June in
the beautiful summer
city of Lappeenranta
in Southeast Finland. This
was the second time the Forum event was
organized outside the Helsinki metropolitan area. The event
was organized in association with the EU Russia Innovation
Forum and as such collected interesting cases from Estonia,
Russia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Finland.
The 12th MoneyTalks Forum took place in October in Espoo,
featuring Innovation Mill® spin-offs. The most anticipated
presentation was given by international investor Paul Murray,
Managing Partner at DFJ Esprit, on their views on the Finnish
market and early stage companies.
“Having participated in several
MoneyTalks events, I am happy to
recommend the series both to entrepreneurs and
investors. The organizers have created an
international platform for meeting the right people.

FEATURING RUSSIAN
CASES ATTRACTED A
LARGE NUMBER OF
COMPANIES AND
INVESTORS
In May, Technopolis Innopoli 2 in Otaniemi
served as the venue for the first ever
MoneyTalks® featuring Russian cases. Finnode,
Greater Helsinki Promotion, Wirma and
International VC Zone partnered with
Technopolis to enable this exclusive event. In
addition to several international Venture Capital
firms, nearly all of Finland’s VC’s attended the
event. Other institutional actors and angel
investors also took part, as the scalable
business opportunities for and from the
immense and unified Russian market are
getting more interesting all the time. Many of
the participants, investors and companies alike,
utilized the opportunity to pre-book meetings
with their desired partners. In total, over 100 pre
-booked meetings took place during the event.
Greater Helsinki Promotion is the investment
promotion agency in the Helsinki metropolitan
region. One of its activities is to offer Russian
companies easy access to Finland and EU.
Funding is many times seen as the bottleneck
for the Russian companies, and MoneyTalks
featuring Russian cases was organized to
matchmake Russian companies and potential
investors. ”Located in the heart of the Baltic Sea
Region, Helsinki is a natural gateway between
Russia and Europe. Helsinki's expertise in
innovation and the experience we have in doing
business with Russians make Helsinki really
attractive for Russian companies” Olivier Bonfils
states.
“Technopolis played an essential role in
organizing this event. They have excellent
contacts to public and VC funding
organizations” says Olivier Bonfils, Greater
Helsinki Promotion’s Senior Business Advisor.
“I liked the concept of MoneyTalks
Oulu - it was really effective.
Especially the one-to-one meetings
were well organized and the
timetables were precisely kept.

Jukka Rauhala and Jukka Jokinen from Technopolis are waiting for their turn at MoneyTalks Tallinn in November 2012.
Technopolis Pulkovo, St Petersburg, organized eleven
events during 2012. Among these were Technopolis
Business Breakfasts for Pulkovo residents and guests on hot
topics for high-tech companies: IT labor market in St.
Petersburg, new project management methods, emotional
leadership in organizations and so on.
”The difference between Technopolis Russian and Finnish
style Business Breakfasts is that due to the size of the city
and the heavy traffic, we start later (9:30) and stay longer (up
to 1 pm), giving time and space to 3 - 4 speakers and two
coffee breaks”, says Olga Andreeva, responsible for

continues.
In February 2012, Technopolis Pulkovo hosted a full-scale
conference ”Event Marketing” in cooperation with Vedomosti/
St. Petersburg Times, the leading newspaper by Sanoma
Independent Media. Technopolis Events as a marketing tool
and matchmaking service were introduced at the conference
to an audience of 70 people.
In March 2012, Technopolis Pulkovo was home to the
international conference “Retrofit and maintenance of
buildings: information technology, energy and eco-
efficiency.” Finnish experts from the cities of Kuopio and
Helsinki shared their knowledge in the conference. The
event was co-organized with the Centre for Entrepreneurship
USA - Russia, and it was the first event in Pulkovo where
professional simultaneous translation was used.
Other events included an open competition for business
school students “What should Technopolis Pulkovo, Stage 2,
offer its customers to make them feel better”. The best
projects, such as a meeting room decorated as a Winter
garden, were presented to the Technopolis Pulkovo team.
Most inspiring ideas!
Pulkovo also hosted a VIP event for the European Bank for
Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), where our
customers presented their businesses in front of International
Board of Directors.
”The MoneyTalks® event featuring Russian cases was a
great example on how we can join forces and link our
customers in the two countries efficiently. We look forward to
having more international events in the future”, Olga
concludes.

International VC Zone seeks to lower the
barriers to screening, analyzing, executing
and managing deals. The purpose is to
increase the activity of international risk
capital investors in Finland and in the Baltic
Sea Region. The increased activity fosters
awareness and competitiveness of local
companies necessary to provide new jobs,
attract skilled employees and become global
leaders.
VC Zone services, provided by a team of private and public
players dedicated to Entrepreneurship, facilitate entry to the
Baltic Sea Region by increasing visibility among local
companies and making reaching them as easy as possible.
The service package includes physical office space and
conferencing facilities in all Technopolis premises in Finland,
Estonia and St. Petersburg area. The package also includes
value-added tools and various support services. Most
importantly, the services help financiers to find interesting
opportunities, organize meetings and visits, and network with
local financiers and other players. And not surprisingly,
events play an important role also in this context!
In 2012, VC Zone service connected over 80 international
VCs with companies from the region in several local events
such as MoneyTalks. In London we organized an event for
international financiers with the Finnish Embassy. In
Barcelona during the Mobile World Congress, the fourth
annual MoneyTalks Dinner gathered a group of mobile
companies, international financiers and global corporations.

Finland Venture Forum was held on January 26, 2012.
Organized by Technopolis Matchmaking Services as a
turnkey service to the TEM group (Finnish Industry
Investment, Tekes and Finnvera), the event brought
together 30 of the most promising Finnish technology
companies with national and European venture capital
investors.
The event was opened by Jyrki Häkämies, Minister for
Economic Affairs, and was followed by the individual
multicontributor, business angel Anssi Vanjoki. Vanjoki
discussed in his keynote speech how idea, energy and
capital are not enough for creating new start-up success
stories. As a third presentation, Kristian Ranta from Mendor
gave an insight into the company’s growth story before and
after closing the VC investment. After opening and keynote
speeches, the event continued with company presentations,
a great amount of one-to-one meetings and an informal
networking over cocktails at the end of the day. And of
course, the best company presentations were awarded!

Translatum is one of the largest language service providers in
Finland, with head office in Tampere. The company employs
some 25 translation industry professionals, in addition to
which it has an extensive network of long-term co-operation
partners composed of more than 400 language solution
professionals. The company provides high-quality translations
in almost any language. The focus is on technical and
commercial translations, but translations in many other fields
are available as well, such as translations of software,
medical, marketing, contract and legal texts. Proofreading,
language training, terminology and DTP services are also part
of the company’s offering.
Translatum joined Technopolis Preferred Partner Program in
2011 and has actively taken advantage of Technopolis events
at various sites. Risto Kuosmanen, CEO of Translatum, in
the picture, and other members of the team have joined many
events as participants, Risto also as a presenter in Tallinn.
Translatum’s keynote presentation at the Tallinn Technopolis
Business Breakfast covered the meaning and relevance of
correct localization. Risto Kuosmanen spoke about the key
roles of language and culture in the internationalization
process: "The image of the company strongly drives its
success. Among other things, the image consists of the
message and how it is communicated domestically and
internationally. A message which is grammatically correct and
adapted to the target culture communicates expertise and
reliability. Knowledge of the language and culture in localizing
the message is vital.”
”We presented at the Technopolis Business Breakfast
in Tallinn. We got new customers, which was one of
the factors encouraging us to expand our Tallinn
operations and also move in to Technopolis
Ulemiste.”

Matchmaking
events are an
essential part of the
Enterprise Europe Network
services. Two Oulu-based
companies, Simplofon and WhileOnTheMove
(WOM), participated in the Mobile World Congress (MWC) exhibition
and the brokerage event organised by Enterprise Europe Network
(EEN) in February 2012 with good results.
For start-up companies looking for international partners, it is crucial to be
present at events such as MWC. “The matchmaking event and the
exhibition were both very important and enabled us to go forward with our
international clients on a concrete level”, states Pirkko Taskinen from
Simplofon.
Kari Kivistö from WOM is already an experienced visitor to different
matchmaking events. In his opinion, the mobile industry event in Barcelona
is the best in this field. “We are participating in the EEN matchmaking event
that is arranged in connection to the MWC exhibition every year. Finding
the right partners for your business is an essential part of the matchmaking
events.” Mobile World Congress Brokerage Event in Barcelona will be
organised again in 2013.
Kari Kivistö is actively
looking for new collaboration
partners for his company.
