Project Introduction

Users are those with:

• Severe form of autism

• Motor control issues

• Limited or no vocabulary

Currently the most common form of communication system implemented in schools

Project Introduction

Goals

• Give children with different speaker an alternate way to learn

• Encourages speech production

• Increases independence

• Used to initiate communication and teach concept of asking/receiving objects

• Begins with single-picture communication and develops into vocal communication

• Demo with Key card

• Verbal communication production

Project Function Criteria• Ability to bring to classroom and test with students

• Full functionality of recording, playback, pushbutton and RFID

• Touch-sensitive button under Velcro; pressure-prompted playback

• Lightweight, easy to handle and portable

• Clean surface for client; 1 button as opposed to multiple

• Securing agent for device on hand

• Organized storage for RFID keys

• Solution grows with the learner

• Possibility: sync our device with the IPAAC application / appropriate iPad application

• Sliding mechanics to adjust volume

Midsemester Design Review Feedback

• More elaboration that cards are re-recordable

• Specification of Battery/ Battery Life/ Requirements

• Has the team made from past semester.

• Concerns of triggers for autism with sound.

• The plan for creating a case. If yes, then how does it affect the budget.

• The budget seems not sufficient to build the device

Meetings with Professor Wendt

• Display is a distraction to clients

• Any buttons / display for caretaker on side of device

•Simplicity; client surface as clean as possible

•Portable / lightweight

•Hand Strap

• RFID ability to play sound multiple times; touch sensitive

• More pressure with button; the more action needed the better the client learns

• Larger key size

• Organize design for keys

DESIGN CHANGES

The reasons behind the change:

•It is easier to implement •A click button does not require a large volume case •A click button will enhance touch sensitive and sound sensitive of the device

• “The FDA is recommending that medical device manufacturers and health care facilities take steps to assure that appropriate safeguards are in place…”
